It’s been 2 years since I last played Guild Wars 2 and I remember next to nothing on how to play and have no clue where to start. On top of that, so many things have changed, it feels like a completely new game to me now. I have a level 50 guardian but have no clue how to jump back into the game. I’m thinking of just starting a new character and playing slowly from the beginning again. Then when I understand things again, I’ll go back to my guardian. Does that sound like a good plan?

Any recommendations?

That sounds like an excellent plan. I’m guessing you have not bought the expansion. That won’t affect your basic game play but please don’t jump off a cliff following someone … they may have a glider and you may have only a face-smashing splat.

The starting experience is now full of popup tips and hints as well as gated access to game features. Some of that won’t happen since you already have a higher level alt but it will teach you a few things.

Feel free to ask in Map Chat for explanations of some things, though you should likely type /wiki (subject of interest) first in case the answer is already there. Map answers often are to wiki it. So if you want to understand what to do with hero points now you can /wiki hero points and get an explanation, then ask in Map to refine your understanding.

The game still has the 5 weapon skills, 1 healing skill, 3 utility skills, and 1 elite skill as before, along with F# skills depending on profession played. Trait and skill acquisition has changed (see the wiki page I mentioned). You can now freely respec any time you are out of combat.

Good luck!

If you care about birthday gifts don’t delete you’re old characters. Otherwise go ahead and delete one or use an empty char slot to start anew and get your bearings.

Also Bog Otter’s Boomerang series is a good way to get an idea how GW2 has progressed over the years.

Get the Expansion or just step away from the game.
Without the Expansion, you will be left out.
Just to tell you about the expansion. There will be 4 PvE maps. some pvp and WvW maps. And there is some not so important improvements. But most importantly, gliding. It’s the best feature that came out of the expansion so far. You can fly glide anywhere.
As for the storyline in the expansion, it is too short and too predictable. But killing Mordremoth was ever so satisfying at the end.

And be ready for the grind. They may say it is optional, they may tell you it is optional, but you will find out soon enough if you play the expansion that you will need to grind.

No you can not fly any where. If offer advice to some person do not make a lie or make exaggeration. Player can glide from some high place but can not fly any where. Also some place like some jump puzzle, fractal, dungeon, PvP, WvW can not glide. Say so is false. Person might buy expansion and think can fly all over map from what you say. This is not true.

Bad advice. He’s thinking about starting over at level one. He can worry about the expansion and any possible grind after he hits level 80.

Be careful what you ask for

I’m gonna suggest you play your Guardian, yolo , learn and not worry about making mistakes while learning.

Get to level 80 and try out Silverwastes. If you like that type of map, that’s pretty much how the new expansion maps are.

I too came back from a 2 year hiatus about 1 year ago and at first I was lost but this games open world pve does not have that steep of a learning curve as you can just wander around and do the dynamic events and hearts.

Nonsense, DO play an Engi – the most fun you can ever have. And for my piece of advice? Don’t quit this time. :P

Why would anyone want to endure leveling up an Engineer only to find the most ridiculous rotations for mediocore output?

You’re cruel for even jesting about that suggestion.

Because Flamethrower!

Who cares if it’s the best damage or not? It’s an effing FLAME THROWER! It’s fun!

(And I suggest you keep the old character, and start over with a new one. Once you’re back into the feel of the game, then you might jump back to the old character.)

It may not be a meta build “best pick” anymore, but with scrapper, I am fully capable of walking around with maximum might by merely holding the flamethrower.

Come back in April when they actually start fixing things. Otherwise, you might be highly disappointed and just quit again. I know I am. 0/

Exactly this! With the right traits you can be at 20-max Might every second without too much work. Add to that the stability and you can easily deal with those annoying mobs/players who like to spam knockbacks/downs/pulls etc. There is another trait you can add as well that will pop quickness on you every 10 secs when you go over 10 stacks of might which is no problem for you with all that might.

Besides all that Engi’s have far more options and toys to play with than the other classes do. The only one that comes close is Ele.

This person doesn’t have HoT though, I don’t think. The Scrapper line isn’t actually available to them for the flamethrower thing not to mention they’d have to get to 80 and then get 250 skill points to get it all together? Or are we just stopping at Mass Momentum?

You can still do good without Scrapper. In fact I ignored it at first as I would have had to sacrifice either my mobility or an extra big chunk of survival and the only bonus I was getting was that extra 6 stacks of might and the quickness now and then.

However I have recently just changed to give it a shot and see if that extra Might and quickness will help speed kills up some. I still have a lot of survival but I did have to sacrifice my survival runes to cover my mobility loss by getting Traveller runes.

So yeah, Engi is in a good spot right now, even if you don’t take the Scrapper line. But heck, good or bad they are just so much fun for all their toys. :P

Honestly I would recommend ALL classes for everyone as I have them all but I know some people just don’t have the time, patience or whatever for that. But having said all that and being that I do have every class and world complete on them all. My fave is still the engi and most fun.

Good advice. I always start a new character when returning to a game. Helps get back into things, even if I eventually go back to a leveled toon.

You guys are awesome! I never expected this level of conversation about my question, so thanks everyone that replied. I think my best bet will be to read about the new trait and skill system, start new for a little bit (will likely start new with some friends too), then once I am familiar with everything again, I can go back to my Guardian. I don’t have the expansion but will probably play the base game for a few months before buying it to get back into it.

Yes, thank you community for the elaboration on the subject of being absence for 2 years…. Myself left 1 year after launch ( even forgot what year I bought the collector’s edition). The last of what I remember is the October fest with that Pumpkin Head Boss,.

Was that when, I think they call lions court got destroyed because I also played little bit in that espisode what ever that was all about. I forgot.

Then I mean briefly came back 1 year after that and was totally lost for a day or two and gave up.

Seen the expansion for GW2 thought about getting it but did not and now presently doing a download update now, so I can not tell how long has it been officially since I cannot remember exactly what date I ended. although I do have a Mesmer lvl70 character l think.

So starting all over sounds like some good advice. I think I like that short dude that jumps good because I remember doing those crazy jumping puzzles and the Mesmer just does not have any jumping ability. I think that dam matrix robe hinder his ability to jump effectively.

So thank you my fellow players for your input

I myself am returning to the game from a 2 year break. Client is updating as we speak. I plan on starting a new character in the game. I’m just hoping this game has not been over ran by trolls since it’s change to f2P. I figured I was going to have to buy the new content right away but from what I have read you don’t have to worry about that till you hit 80.

1st CONDITION buids are now more then viable in PVE. stack caps have been raised from 25 to 1500… Condition duration food has been nerfed though +40% duration -> +20% duration

  • Newer stat combinations have been added, These are Nomads and Sinister in Vanilla and the new 4 stat combo’s in HoT. HoT also saw introduction of the new stats Expertise (condition duration) (+20-30% condition duration) and concentration (boon duration) to allow for new builds with comparable length condition uptime as before HoT and extreme duration buffs.
  • New boons: alacrity, resistance
  • New conditions: slow, taunt
  • New food is available, from Soutsun Cove, Dry top, Silverwastes and HoT.

Suggestions:

  1. keep your oldest characters, Get ascended gear for you preferred main(s) if you are planning to do high (50+) level fractals. Ascneded gear can now be switched to other stat combinations for some skill points (now called spirit shards) some ecto and an exotic inscription/insignia for your weapons/armor piece, you could delete a newer alt or one you don’t have a click with and make a new character and use a+30 levels 3rd year birthday levelling scroll to start a new character.you could use the birthday boosters to improve levelling
  2. go and find Silverwastes and Dry Top, Silverwastes is a nice event map with good money making potential, Silverwastes isan indication of HoT maps, it’s a meta event map, all thigs done on the map are usedto further progress into this map, same as the 4 maps in HoT.If this doesn’t appeal to you you lost 1 of the reasons to upgrade to HoT
  3. if you have gems to spare , or interest in lore, unlock Living Season p2. It will allow insight into the events leading to HoT
  4. If you own HoT/ just bought it activate the story, and look around.
  5. If you own HoT Start unlocking the Masteries and Specialisations…
  6. If you own HoT And you have ascneded gear characters: RAIDS
  7. Do -NOT- expect much from the following game parts:
-Dungeons (nerfed to death, no more community for dungeons)
-WvW (destroyed, community took a BIG hit)
  8. Reworked and interesting:
-Fractals (20 or even 50+), works better in general also on lower levels with HoT, also good revenue (if I’m right)
    -Tequatl, Shatterer

The game is still relatively troll free. Noworries there.

23 lvl 80’s, 9 times map, 4ele, 4ncr, 3war, 3grd, 3rgr, 2thf, 2msm, 1eng, 1 rev.
Been There, Done That & Will do it again…except maybe world completion.

I was in a very similar boat 6 months ago. My advice is do the personal story (also agree ^^ unlock season 2 and do this first) and quests first before you hit HOT, this will engage you with the game world again. Enjoy the builds and don’t worry about perfecting x and y, just have fun.
