Base game Toggle Glider Option please?
HOT is NOT for the Casual (My Sentiments exactly)
+1
I’d suggest an option similar to the double-tap-to-dodge toggle. I turned that off after a few jumping puzzles and haven’t touched it in two years. As far as I know, the glider opens when you press space for too long. For… safety reasons, I guess? To keep people who can’t be bothered to press space a second time while falling from plummeting to their deaths? Who knows.
If it’s not possible to turn off gliding entirely, a toggle for that like the one for double tap dodging would solve a lot of problems (and reduce the amount of swearing during jumping sections by an estimated 37%).

Just let us unequip the glider, like we can with any other bit of equipment.
When I first read this, I was thinking “You have to activate the glider, it does not auto-open” so I don’t understand the need to “turn it off”
But, you know, if that is what people want, then let them have it, just make sure to set the default to being on.
Someone suggested being able to un-equip the glider, I like that idea the best, because I would like to be able to see if I accidentally turned it off.
It’s just that the two functions share the same key.
Short-press = jump
Long-press = jump and deploy glider
The long press is really handy to maximise your gliding height, which I’m sure is why they implemented it like that, but it is really annoying if you accidentally do it whilst aiming to jump onto a small ledge/rock/branch.
It’s hard to undo years/decades of platform gaming muscle memory where you press for longer/harder to make a bigger jump. On particularly tricky jumps, the adrenaline starts to flow and I sometimes overdo the key press. I can’t be the only person who pushes insanely hard on the key and leans towards the screen in an effort to jump a bit further. After all, everyone knows that video game rally cars turn sharper corners if you lean into the turn and grimace (…)
So being able to separate the jump and glide keys would work, or unequipping the glider, or maybe just making the long press a bit longer. It’s not an absolute show-stopper but there have been enough forum posts to indicate that it is affecting more than a couple of players.
glider should be activated by double pressing the jump key, not by long pressing it. I think that alone would make things easier.
Please add shorter hops to justify a difference between an instant tap and a long press.
that it makes every other class in the game boring to play.”

Messing with the timing of the jump key isnt going to work. its not a matter of “well just dont hold the spacebar down!” thats not a solution. for JP or precision, please let us just toggle the glider OFF entirely! add a hotkey that we can bind for that, like we can toggle walk/run, and weapons drawn/sheathed.
I was in that very map last night, and as lightly and quickly as I tapped the jump bar, my glider did deploy. I got a message about this — may in fact have been from the OP in this thread — and I suggested a discussion here on the forums.
Our situation may be our keyboards, where they can’t distinguish a quick tap from a holding tap. But I can confirm that for some of us, at least, the bloomin’ glider can result in our untimely deaths!

Aye, right. Because that is going to happen.
Although… hmmm… food-related gliders? Who doesn’t want to soar over Tangled Depths in a glider shaped like a pulled pork sandwich or a platter of eggs benedict? ~lol~

Or maybe a condiment glider.
A glider shaped like a packet of salt.
ANet may give it to you.

I recently went out and spent well over a hundred dollars on a mechanical keyboard for this very reason and it is now possible for me to jump but not glide. Possible, but not actually probable because of so many long hours holding down that space bar in fear I am not going to make a jump, fall to my death, and have to repeat a really long puzzle yet again.
My old keyboard had a really sloppy space bar and may have contributed to the learned habit of holding down to long but I kind of think the vertigo that many jumping puzzles seem to invoke are the real culprit.
Maybe instead of no fly zones their could be ‘safety’ zones around jumping puzzles that only deploy the glider once your fall rate crosses some threshold that would kill you or if your approaching the ground at a ‘terminal’ velocity.
I know that currently the glider is bound to jump. Would it be technically feasible to have a tick box to allow players to remove that default and then be forced to select another key which would then activate the glider?
Or how about a double tap of the jump key in order for the glider to deploy. You can have a toggle for this in the settings menu.

tbf every should go out and buy a nice mechanical keyboard at some point

I have a nice mechanical keyboard and the glider still triggers a lot of the time just from a solid press of the space bar.
Wished for a toggle too, as the jumping puzzles dont always disable gliding.
It’s rough in the mushroom jumping puzzle in TD as well. I got locked in a cycle of engaging my glider during a long jump to a mushroom cap, which than soared me over the mushroom before my disengage command took hold.
It’s not fun looking like an idiot as you deploy your glider, soar two feet over the same mushroom cap and drop to the floor 5 times in a row before you get the long press pressure right to make the jump without engaging the glider.
The struggle was real.

I was exactly the same. It’s a struggle against the interface and that’s no fun. Somebody pointed out to me recently it’s possible to make the glider descend vertically on a spot if you have the lean mastery, to help with tricky landings. Haven’t tried it yet but it sounds like it might help us with the TD jp, at least until anet hopefully give us better options for controlling when the glider opens.

Or they could simply just require double-tap to glide, with tapping before/during the apex of the jump deploying the glider as soon as it’s ready.

Ha! Yeah right, when pigs fly……..:P
Food-related gliders are a fascinating idea but we’re getting a little off topic and glider designs do have their own thread.
Gaile – would you be willing to take this issue to the developers and let us know, without any specific deadlines or promises, whether they’d ever consider letting us disable the glider when we choose, or allow binding it to a different key or perhaps provide a slider to let us choose how long the jump key must be held to activate the glider, as was suggested in another of these threads? Any option will do. I don’t want to turn this into another of those threads, but it would be nice to know that the devs are at least aware of this issue, as you are, since a couple of threads about this keep popping up every week? Gliding is such a fun part of the game. It just needs a little more control.
There are plenty of workable solutions. It just needs the desire and the resource to implement one of them.
(and, please, no food-themed gliders. I will not ride a tomato.)
having the option to bind the glider to another key would be the most practical alternative for me.
in regard to food themed gliders something sprung to my mind I need to share: can I please ride a potato like Baron Münchhausen rode his cannonball?
While I don’t often have a problem with it myself, my gf is used to pressing the space bar longer for further jumps, just like she leans to the side for a sharper turn in Mario Kart. Having the glider deploy because of it has led to many rage quits, and by now she is really sick of it (I am too).
Requiring a double tap would help to some regard, however, I would suggest adding a customizable key bind instead. Double tapping would still cause problems, especially when doing quick successive jumps and you press jump a quarter of a second too early. The glider will deploy and there will be rage.
Therefore, I suggest doing it right and letting us choose which buttons to press.
Edit: I want an umbrella glider!

A toggle key is a nice idea , but i prefer to get a customizable key for the glider.
So many great ideas mentioned… pig, potato, tomato. I think it’s time for a personal airship / dirigible glider!
I have jump assigned to a mouse button so seem to get mis-deploys less frequently. I’m torn on reassigning it since I’ve gotten used to it. Keep it optional.

NOOOO!!!!! :P
When your NOT doing a jumping puzzle, the glider function is fantastic as is and using any other key than the space bar would certainly ruin that for me. Auto deploy is fantastic and allows you to run off a ledge with space held down and KNOW that your going to engage the glider. The old implementation was way to error prone with faulty taps to the space bar that did not actually engage the glider, or even worse double taps because you thought it did not engage when it really did and then you disengage by mistake and fall to your death.
Their are already far to many keys to deal with, and the new raid ‘action’ key has caused me much grief as all my mouse buttons are spoken for and my left handle already has over a dozen keys to be responsible for.
