Brown bears can remove conditions often and rangers don’t have alot of condition removal abilities. Bears also have by FAR the highest health, and pets and minions are screwed in pvp/boss fights by the red rings and aoes everywhere, so having a pet that can survive for awhile helps. A cat or bird that’s dead instantly isn’t doing more damage than a bear that keeps plugging along. The longbow part is just.. its a ranger. People make rangers to use bows for the most part. Sure it isn’t always the optimal weapon in every scenario but it has one of the only AoE attacks on a weapon that rangers get, and can be traited to have 1500 range so its good for wvw. Also has a stealth and a knockback for some general defense and rapid fire is one of the hardest hitting of all weapon skills for a ranger. Note I don’t use bearbow myself, just playing devils advocate and listing some reasons others might play this way, it doesn’t necessarily mean they are braindead or anything.

Correction: rapid fire is one of the weakest of all weapon skills for a ranger.

Bears have bonkers health. Like, if a bear is an M1 Abrams tank, the next closest tank pet would be like, a security van. Rangers with a bear can go full zerker and when they’re on their own especially their bear can safely tank for them. There’s also people who like certain things about Rangers but unfortunately don’t have a very good concept on which pet to use in which situations. The reason Rangers are hated on in dungeons is because their DPS pets die quickly in aoe, but like someone said, at least bears can survive and do “some” dps.

People play ranger to play a ranged class. Axes are useless unless in PvP, and shortbows are useless unless doing PvE.

That leaves little choice in the matter when it comes to wanting to play the aforementioned old archetype of a ranger, until you realize the irony of Warriors being better rangers than rangers.
The reason why all choose bears has been explained above; There is no balance for pet survability when it comes to AOE-happy content. Other pet classes can re-summon their minions at will, but ranger pets come in heavy cooldowns when downed. Given half your DPS comes from your pet, there is little choice once more unless you know your pet will survive, somehow, the ordeal.

In PvP/WvW it’s your main source of damage while using Longbow. Also, the burst is scary, especially when using Quickening Zephyr.

Now, on the topic of this thread, I’d say they use it because it’s easy to learn, safe and fun to use.

For the new players, it would behoove Anet to change the description as to Rangers being “unparalleled archers” , but perhaps they mean players can use both bows LOL.
The choice of bears was explained well before in this thread, including there is less micromanaging since bears have so much health. Each pet has its uses. Bears are tanky and easy to level with for newer players. The answer is because many of the so-called “bearbows” (I hate that term) don’t know any better yet.

I laughed at the remark earlier about the “press 2 to win” warriors. Seriously, if someone sticks with the class many will look for more optimum builds so the OP won’t be bothered so much by dungeon kicks of “bearbows”. And yes this is a play how you want game. There are several threads on the forums as to DPS ranks by class, so ask for what you want in a pug dg group. <smile>

This thread is so tiresome – OP go post this on the ranger forum.

I seem to now be under the impression that when people say “Bearbow”, they mean any ranger with a bow, regardless of what pet or bow type they’re using.

I’ve seen some people use it that way. Someone the other day randomly yelled “Lol bearbow” at me as they ran past, when I was using a short bow, moa and a trapper build.

But an actual bearbow is specifically using a bear and a longbow. Often with 1-3 signets.

As for why people use it so much it’s because it’s a reasonably effective build that’s easy to use. Stay at range, let the bear tank while you plug away with arrows. Personally I found it incredibly boring and no good at all in dungeons because it’s hard to get enough range to use the longbow properly and if you do then you’re too far from the rest of your party to share boons, cure conditions on them etc.

It’s not paying a math competition, it’s playing what is actually effective and brings something to the table for your team. You don’t have to do any math at all, just think about what you’re doing.

And just for the record, I use LB+GS and a Cat+Drake in my Ranger. I just don’t push that on other people by not using the Ranger in dungeons/PvP.

As a ranger, I’ll admit when I didn’t know what I was doing at first, yes I used a brown bear for leveling. So every bearbow ranger that has joined my party, we do kick them because they don’t really benefit & usually it’s because they don’t know what they’re doing imo- I use a spotter/spirit build- even in wvw I don’t use a brown bear because honestly I don’t have many issues with getting swarmed with conditions.
I agree with the post though that ‘play your way’ Yes, play your way- even if it’s the worst build that doesn’t help the party benefit as long as they’re ready to be kicked.

Just saying – not to be offensive. – but I hope those kicks are generally related to high level fractals.
Because if you go around kicking people in normal dungeons or otherwise are unable to even out the output just by having moderately knowledgeable people around regardless of their build, I feel inclined to inform you either…
A) You are an elitist to a fault.
B) Your party’s overall playthrough knowledge is lacking to begin with.

People love to complain about “bearbow” rangers because they are an easy target. They’re visually obvious and it takes minimal knowledge of the game to understand a criticism of the build. You don’t even have to know any ranger skills/traits to complain about it; you can just look over and see a guy with a bow standing away from your group stack.

Anti-ranger sentiment in general is also relatively popular, so complaints about them can be posted confidently without much risk of being called out.

I’ll bet there are tons more players out there who run similarly sub-optimal builds on their profession of choice. They just don’t get caught at it, or yelled at, because the mistakes they are making are more subtle and require more depth of experience to criticize. Should that necro be using an axe or a staff? Is that warrior using his adrenaline efficiently enough? I have no idea. So long as they stand on top of the rest of the party and the bosses go down fast, nobody seems to care. But if they see a ranger standing a little off to the side, everyone loses their minds.

I doubt there is a disproportion of bearbow rangers than anything else in the game. I think it is because people are used to hearing complaints about them, and pointing them out, that it sticks in your mind and you take notice when one is around.

Yes, there is a lot of anti-ranger sentiment in this game for the reasons you posted Fyrebrand. Stack and bash is the way to go, sadly.

Those (esp. one who says they are a ranger) who kick other rangers might want to take the teeniest bit of their “precious time” to point those rangers they kick in the right direction as to optimum builds, if just to be nice. Tho, I doubt they will…

I don’t do pugs, never have never will. Know which class to take to each dungeon, and only do them with guildies and/or friends. Actually, I think I’ll try out the Ultimate Bearbow build Prysin posted on the forums (he’s an awesome ranger) just to see what will happen. <smile>

It depends a lot on how it’s phrased.

For example I once did a dungeon with another ranger who was level 76 and who didn’t even know he could swap his pet when they died, because it was his first character and he’d listened to a friend who told him to level by crafting and then do dungeons.

But instead of simply telling him he was playing wrong or trying to correct him I started a conversation. I asked him why he didn’t swap his pet when it went down, he asked me what I meant and I explained what pet swapping is and the benefits of it. From there we got on to a discussion about the different pets and the pros and cons of each one, and then on to ranger builds in general and skills he understood (signets) and ones he didn’t (everything else) and how to figure out when and how to use them. All of which was in between fights during the rest of the dungeon.

Obviously it took longer than me simply telling him he was wrong and ordering him to change his build, or kicking him with no explanation and looking for someone who had already figured it out, but it also worked better and at the end of it we had a new guild member too.

I completely agree that seasoned players should (in the sense that it would be a good thing to do) help less knowledgeable/experienced players. Such is an important part of the sense of community in an MMO. It is one of my favorite aspects of playing GW1 and CO.

Ugly?! How very dare you, sir! You owe my bear an apology cookie.

Back on topic, for open-world PvE, people use bows and bears because, well, you can, and it works well enough. I use them when I’m just doing solo questing stuff, although I have a bird or canine for when I want a pet with a bit more dps, and a sword and greatsword to swap to when mobs get close or I’m in a tight space. Mostly I just love bears, but the brown bear is a good tank with a useful F2 skill, and at long range the longbow dps isn’t so terrible that I generally have trouble. I’m on my own, stuff dies and I don’t; for my purposes, I’m as ‘optimal’ as I need to be.

Of course, for some particular fights, range is contraindicated and pets are borked no matter what you do (Canach’s dungeon comes to mind…had to use a spider in there). Carrying on pigheadedly in such circumstances is foolish. But in general, using either bears or bows is not actually the problem; sticking rigidly to one weapon setup without adapting it for the circumstances, and making adjustments to your playstyle are. And that would be the same for any class, not just rangers.

it’s a shame you can’t train your pet to be a tank or damage dealer like in GW1.

Personally I’m waiting for the day when they allow you to dye to customise your pet. Every so often I feel like swapping out to the bear cause it’s a friendly and cuddly.

So many bearbows exist because so many people who want to “help” you kill by using longbow #4 on the mob that you are meleeing.

No different than any other class with a launch or knockback. Hammer wars, Engie and Mes can be just as bad. People use skills they should not.

That is the drawback here. Too many weapons bars include a skill you shouldn’t use but very sparingly, if at all in group. You effectively lose a skill slot with no way to slot another. A Longbow ranger, in group, is essentially running with 3 useable skills.

Yay build diversity.

Ley lines. The perfect solution to deadlines and writers block. Now in an easy open Can.

where the spec clearly don’t belong.

says you.

Stay delusional, not really my problem but one day you will realise the truth when you go do content that doesn’t allow to mindlessly sit back at 1500 range and spam 1 and see how far that will get you.

You show me that content in GW2 and I will reinstall this game right now. I’d love it if this game actually required skill.
