Hey everyone!

I’m just coming back after being away from the game for quite some time. I played an Engineer and a Necro both to about level 15 or so, not very high.

I was wondering if someone could shed some light on the various classes. I’ve played a lot of WoW and I understand that the game is a little more action oriented.

Can anyone suggested some fun combinations of race/class to play? I like to PVE and I’m definitely not afraid to do some PVP. In a perfect world, I’d like to do both those things but with a character that isn’t overly difficult to learn and remember a million different spells and abilities for.

Thanks to anyone for the their opinion and input!

The easiest characters to play are probably Guardian, warrior and ranger.

Warriors are better in PvE than PvP. Guardians are better in PvP than PvE.

Guardians excel in all areas of the game.

I haven’t really played an necromancer but their minions would make them a safe choice when confronting multiple enemies. I do have an engineer and I would say that it’s not a very beginner friendly profession. There are a lot of kits, elixirs, turrets, and situational utility skills that make the engineer pretty complex. If you master it, which I haven’t done, you might actually find it really rewarding.

Personally, I find the thief to be the most enjoyable due to its simplicity. There is the issue with thieves being really soft though so you’ll get really intimate with dodging as you’re leveling one. Even though a thief isn’t very complex, there’s a lot of depth in terms of survival. You have to be really analytical and have a good grasp of your surroundings. If played right, you should be able to get out of any hairy situation. Thieves that get too aggressive tend not to live very long.

I find the guardian to be pretty boring as it is pretty tanky and its damage output isn’t all that high compared to other professions. Still, it’s very easy to get into and because of its defensive skills you can get away with missing a dodge or two. I won’t get into too many details about the guardian but it’s very similar to the paladin in WoW. That happened to be my least favorite class.

Now an elementalist is actually really fun to play once you get used to switching attunements on the fly. It’s almost as complex as an engineer but because your attunements are mapped to your F keys it’s slightly more intuitive than switching kits on an engineer. Elementalists are very flexible in that they can quickly switch from defense in earth, to burst damage in air, to sustained damage in fire, and healing in water.

I haven’t fully leveled my warrior yet but I hear it’s really easy to learn. It might be better than the guardian because it has stronger offensive capabilities. The mesmer is a bit strange compared to the other professions. Mesmers rely a great deal on their illusions and skills that confuse enemies so that their attacks damage themselves. Conditions can also come into play although at the high level direct damage builds tend to be preferred.

I haven’t really gotten into group play and synergy between party members because that’s something you’ll have to discover on your own. What I will say is that combo fields can be utilized by physical projectiles or certain special effects can be triggered by blast finishers. Now projectiles and finishers come with certain skills so you have to check the tooltip for each skill if you want to know which skills are projectiles or finishers.
