There is nowhere to hide.

Thief (Speed/stealth)
Ele (Everything falls over as you get there)
PVE Dungeon
Ele (Damage)

I know it’s called GWEN but realistically you can get away without the warrior much more effectively than you can without the well bombs

The best class is the one you like playing.
Assuming everyone’s running power-based builds for dungeons/PvE:
Best for PVE leveling:
-Engineer (bomb aoe spam killing every mob ez pz, 100% swiftness uptime)
-Ranger (easy but boring)
-Warrior (easy but super extra boring)
Best for dungeons:
-Ele (mmhmh dat ice bow and DPS)
-Guardian (delishus WoR & aegis)
-Engie (sweet sweet vulnerability, top tier deeps, ability to cover any slacking guard/thief/ele)
Best for PvP:
-Ele
-Engie
-Warr
Best for WvW:
-zerg you got GWEN
-roaming: go engie you dummy
Conclusion: roll an engie.
i’m curious how much experience you have in each category to come up with that list.
Actually pretty good, since I’ve got maxed all classes in the game, and played a lot of any gametype starting from early beta of guild wars 2
The best class is the one you like playing.
these charts are to see statistically what people prefer in different situations, and to see what is repeating and what’s not. I can surprise you but many people don’t have all-in-one favorite class, and they choose the one that fits best for different role, and that’s why I’m curious abut that charts
I hope this thread will evolve into something big. Big enough to make some kind of graphical diagrams

Best Class for PvE Open World/Leveling:

In short: any class with fast access to AOE
Best Class for PvE Bosses:
Ranger, Elem
Best Class for PvE Dungeons and Fractals:

Best Class for cPvP:
Have no idea, but heard Warriors and Engineers are very good here. Also, I think, it must be separated for hotjoins and teamfights here.
Best Class for WvW zerg:
Guardian, Warrior and Necro - current meta and you wouldn’t be able to change something here
Best Class for WvW roaming:

This.
Even more of both of these.
I can’t PvP well due to general anxiety(I’m just not the site that thrives on that sort of conflict), though a guild I’m in has many PvP enthusiasts that play pretty much everything.
I think good coordination and knowing both your build and your game plan are the best. That’s the impression I get anyway. They’re pretty fun folks in said guild and are generally happy to help anyone in the guild get into PvP, so it’s a commonly discussed topic.
Just yesterday, they were having a big, long brainstorm on running a full necro team, going power/condi hybrid and traveling exclusively as a full team.
It sounded pretty good for what they were planning. Condi e crap out of people, have a few running d/w to cleave thieves out of stealth and well bomb as a group in clinch situations.
AFAIK, they’re actually going to try it out sometime.
Their ideas usually seem to work out comedically well when they’re brainstorming, so I’m given to suspect as I said about good teamwork and coordination being most important, cause some of the things they make work well as a team sound bizarre and weird at times. Might be why they work, in fact.
I think all the build is on meta battle.
For open world leveling(map completion). Warrior and theif get the top spot on my vote because high mobility. Though I think the fastest map completion time (like 30 hours) I seen is on a elementist.
For dungeon “PUG”, I vote guardian over anything. I can’t remember the numbers of time I hear people say “let me switch to guardian” when the dungeon/fractal start to run bad.
For premade dungeon or spvp, you actually need a mix group composition. So it is hard to say, but a few class definitely is more prefered than other.

Looking at this so far I would go with most of it, However Warrior and Guardian are dull.. I’ve played since launch just as these two and now I can’t even look at them. I am currently using Eng, Nec, and Ranger for everything.
Biggest surprise though is that the is no mention of Mesmer, even though they used to be very popular, and still seem to be in openPvE. Maybe all the Mesmers are to busy to be reading forums?

Ah Theftwind, ever the sensible one.
I agree.
Missing you and others from HoD.
The best class is the one you like playing.
More of this as well.
If this is just a popularity thing, then I’d be happy to post my favourites. If it’s more like OMGBESTDPSZERKORGTFO then I’ll have to pass.
So long Treeface.

This is the best and only correct answer.

Don’t confuse people with common sense. They don’t want hear it. Simply point them towards the “I Win GW2” button and send them on their way. ^^
I <3 Ele. PRETTTTTTYYY COOOOOLOOOORS. That is all <3

Theftwind never said the best class for a person had to be stagnant.
I main ele and she floats somewhere between full clerics and a mixture of zerker/assassin gear and build. Currently I’ve got zerker/assassin gear but my traits are more for survivability than DPS.
If it’s one of those days where I know my reflexes aren’t the best, I’ll swap to my cleric’s gear and trait up for survivability. If I’m aiming for dungeons, I’ll swap to my zerker/assassin gear and swap to DPS traits and join a casual LFG because I don’t have the skills for the speed run/experienced runs. But even in the dungeon, I’ll sometimes swap out if I feel that’s what I’ll have more fun in.
I’d like to point out that GW2 doesn’t really have tanks. Instead we have controllers.
Condi on the other hand doesn’t really deserve its own group as there are 2 different types of condis that fall under 2 categories: damage and control.
When Anet announced GW2 they said they had their own version of the trinity:
Damage: builds who’s prime focus is dealing damage, either directly or through conditions.
Support: builds who’s prime focus is supporting the party with boons and heals.
Control: builds who’s prime focus is controlling the enemies with conditions, effects and crowd control abilities.
All builds in GW2 fall under those 3 categories.
So based on that, I’m going to edit your list to fit Anet’s idea of GW2’s trinity. I removed the open-world PvE section of your list as I believe open-world PvE is so incredibly easy that any class with almost any build will do fine as long as you deal enough damage.
Here is my list:
Best Class for PvE Dungeons and Fractals:
1. Guardian (Control/Support)
2. Elementalist (Damage/Support)
3. Thief (Control/Damage)
4. Warrior (Damage/Support)
Best Class for PvP:
1. Shoutbow Warrior (Support)
2. D/D Elementalist (Support/Control)
3. D/P Thief (Damage/Control)
4. Medihammer Guardian (Control/Damage)
Best Class for WvW:
1. Staff Guardian (Support/Control)
2. Staff Elementalist (Damage/Control)
3. Staff Necromancer (Damage/Control)
4. Shout Warrior (Support/Control)
WOW! I’ve been playing since the beginning of GW2 and since 3 weeks after gw1 was released and am taken aback by the choices here. I’m by no means the best player but I have some comments.
First – I don’t play my thief or else much. Both are 80 but too hard to really play well for what I get out of them. Very powerful in the right hands but pretty much junk for me. I solo them down in Cursed Shore some and farm in Fireheart Rise but not my favorites.
My favorites at this time are my Ranger (GS/Bow), Guardian (Staff/GS), Mesmer(GS/SS or SF). I also am working on my Necro (massive condi), Engineer, and a Hammer Warrior.
In looking for a ‘BEST’ class, it will depend on the abilities of the payer and where they play and their play style. I don’t do PvP at the moment because it doesn’t interest me… maybe with Stronghold. As I approached 98% map completion, WvW became a necessity for mapping (at that time) and I find I like it. The Silverwastes and Southsun provide their own challenges as will the expansion. Will the Revenant become the ‘BEST’ class? Maybe for some. I’m planning on having and playing the heck out of one.
I’ve also found that some classes, like Warrior, can be more fun in the lower levels than the higher ones and others like Mesmer and Necro are awful to level up with but really shine when you hit 60 or 80 and the traits kick in.
