Hey, I’m going to play Guild Wars 2 and i’m just wondering about what class is best for me. Just want some suggestions,

I usually play Archer type classes in games, I like killing stuff as fast as possible and im not a fan of the generic warrior class.

I’ve tried a Thief/Assassin (whatever its called) to level 7 and i couldnt kill crap.

So any reccomendations on a class that might suit me?

Thanks!

Well, rangers are archers with pets and some naturey skills, so that’d be the closet thing.

As for thief, that’s a problem with you, not the class. Thieves are very capable damage dealers (as is every class). Apart from those two, warriors are the only other bow-wielding class, which you’d probably dislike.

Mantaining Range to kill most of the time: Ranger

Maintaining CQC and range to kill/Aoe: Engineer (hard class to use though)

idk what im doing

Probably ranger if you want an archer-y class. But be warned, Rangers have a higher skill cap later down the road and if you “couldn’t kill crap” with a thief only up to level 7 you may find a ranger is far too difficult to play.

You may not like generic warrior class, but I’d have to say a warrior might fit you better. (they can use a longbow and a rifle)

The issue may not be you or the thief class. The new leveling system locks you out of leveling normally. You only actually “level” on certain levels where you get stat boosts, so you’ll feel weak with all classes until you reach a certain threshold.

Have you considered spellcaster professions? Try elementalist.

Oh, I would also mention that the combat in this game doesn’t favor range over melee like most other MMOs do. GW2 has a risk vs reward combat system which basically makes melee weapons do much more damage than ranged weapon in most cases with a few exceptions.

That being said, I still recommend the warrior for you. (even though the thief is the class that can kill thing the fastest.)

wut? o.O Ranger is second only to warrior in it’s simplicity

What games favor range over melee? Almost every game I’ve played has tried to force players to get in close to maximize their output as a risk vs reward function. Difference being that in many other games you simply don’t have that option as things will simply kill you in melee, and here if you play well you can pretty easily manage melee.

To the OP: Ranger, you get ok range damage with a pet that can do a lot of work for you. Very easy to play it’s easy builds, though tough to play it’s more advanced builds well.

Elementalist with staff is pretty insane damage, but you’re squishy, so it’s a riskier range as if you do get touched you’re down.

Those would probably be the best 2 ranged professions. Engineer isn’t bad, mesmer can be decent but they’re both a bit more funky and don’t sound like they’d be your cup of tea. Warrior is also always an option.

Well, I don’t know. I guess I’m speaking from personal experience. I played a ranger for a long time and it’s skill cap fluctuated depending on what you were doing, and it seemed like in higher level areas and high level content using it was more complicated and difficult than when he was leveling up or just running about doing DEs.

I play a thief now and I feel in more ways it’s easier to play than a ranger. With my ranger, much of my damage was tied to my pet, even if I didn’t have significant investment in the BM trait line, but the pet was ridiculously squishy, so when he died, not only did I suffer a dps loss, I also gained an incoming damage increase since the mobs were now fully devoted to chewing off my face.

With the thief, I do so much damage the mobs have very little time to react or do any significant damage to me, and when things do get perilous, I have so many defensive and evasive maneuvers at my disposal it almost makes feel sorry for the mobs ineptitude at striking or doing any meaningful damage to me.

But you know what? To each their own. You like archers, Lone Gamer? Play a Ranger; they are the most archeriest archers in GW2. Who knows, you might rock peoples socks off with it.

Ranger skills are simple in design yes, but its the way you are going to play in PvE in you want to run the cookiecutter PvE build. Basicly you need to get good with sword and half of the time it roots you etc, so you need to turn autoattacks off and truly master its attack chain if you still want to be able to dodge a big hit. Bow is only used to put #5 down and #2 on CD, the rest is all melee. You dont have to do this on other classes, since none of the autoattacks root you.

I use sword on my ranger and, maybe it’s my history of action MMO’s, but I don’t find animation cancelling or dodge timing in any way challenging or difficult to do on ranger. Thief is far, far more complex in terms of dps output while staying alive and well

I dont find it very diffucult as well, its just something you have to do, while on my ele, thief and warrior i dindt need to deal with such a mechanic, so it did took a while for me to get into it properly.

Rangers are the only true ranged class in GW2, most other classes should use melee weapons whenever possible. Ranger’s longbow is quite decent and offers quite a good balance of range and damage.

Elementalist Staff… hands down the best range weapon in the game.

It’s the only weapon setup that is superior to the melee options. Ranger Sword+X is superior damage and utility in almost every way to Longbow.

Still… yeah longbow is pretty solid as a ranged weapon.

Thanks for the replies guys!

I guess i’ll give elementalist and rogue a shot.

I like being stealthy and such. if they dont work out i’ll try warrior or ranger!
