Best order for ranger
Truth be told, it doesn’t really matter, you’ll experience a different arc, but you’ll end up doing the same story from about the level 60 arc.
If your thief is Whispers (obvious choice right?) your ele I’m guessing will be Priory and Warrior Vigil, you can take you ranger on any and know that you will get your account badges and order achievements anyway.
I think my ranger is Vigil.
I think my ranger is Vigil.
Meanwhile my ranger is Priory. All the orders were designed so that any race and class can join any order and be welcomed. If you’re stuck and can’t decide based on the personality you assign to the character, or possibly the race (like asura going to the Priory), then you could do Heavy armor to the Vigil, Medium to Order of Whispers, and Light to Priory. Or completely mix it up from thee.
Its just a couple of specific story missions and then you will never associate with the order again. So it really doesnt matter. If the mission are hard, level up some more.
I’m posting this for a general advice post.
I’m playing through the personal story of my second character, a Sylvari Ranger. It has come to the point where I am to decide the order I want to join. I’m am stuck on this decision. Was so easy for my human thief and will be for my mage and warrior but for the ranger I am struggling. Any help or input would be appreciated.
I wouldn’t make the decision dependent on the character’s profession but on how you build the character in the first place (the personal choices you made during their creation).
Since the order pick doesn’t matter in the long run (which is a shame, by the way), I wouldn’t spend too much time on this. Just choose the one most fitting for the character.
Indeed my thief is a member of the order if whispers. My mesmer I am to make a member if the priory. I have an asura engineer I am to make a member of the priory to based on race. My norn warrior I’ll make a member of the vigil.
As for character themselves. Only thing I remember on my ranger is he acts with dignity. I imaged him as being a gaurdian of the grove, hence his last name is Gladestalker.
Had thought priory to begin with but now wandering if the whispers might be a good option. I know it doesn’t matter long term and I’m likely fussing over nothing but still I am finding it hard to decide.
You don’t have to “remember” anything, you can read up all the choices you made upon creation in the Hero Panel.
Quickly looked it up on my lunch break lol. Find attached the choices and information about the character from the heros tab.
What cycle was he born in? They had character traits associated with them in the character description so you could use that to help decide? Things like those born under the cycle of noon tend to be inquisitive and adventurous or something along those lines (probably not accurate but that sort of idea)
Born under the cycle of night.
Dreamed about the shield of the moon.
Had envisioned a kind of protector role.
There is no absolute right or wrong answer and I’m fairly certain you will find NPC rangers in each Order.
I picked the Order of Whispers for my ranger. I thought she was going to join the Vigil…right up until I started doing the quests which introduce you to the 3 Orders. Then I repeatedly found myself thinking she wouldn’t like the Vigils plans, I don’t think she picked their idea at all, and always picked the Whispers plan when it was an option. So by the time she had to choose an order to join that was the obvious decision.
But that was based more on her personality in general than her profession.
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
My ranger is whispers lol. so pick whichever one you think you would like the best. I have done all three arcs and personally prefer the whispers arc. But go with whichever one you think fits your character’s personality more or what arc you prefer to play through.
I sent my necro to priory and my rev to vigil. Every other class got to go order of whispers. They are just much cooler for me
I had thought I was going to choose priory for my ranger when I came up with the choice, but now I think of it, I don’t think I ever went with their plans up to this point. I mainly went Whispers or Vigil. I don’t think the blunt straight forwardness of the vigil matches the character though. He in my mind is not a military person. He’s a stalker of the grove, someone who tracks and defends his land. In that note he’s not a book keeper either, preserving libraries of knowledge, so, best fit on that note would be a Whispers Agent, right?
Stalker sound right in the Whispers area of work…
I decided my characters would be somewhat contrary to the norm, and their presonality grew around that.
The three are asura, but they are way different:
My Reaper is an old, cranky and obsesive guy from the College of Statics, always looking for stability and simplicity, and people to scare. He joined the Vigil because they are simpler, cleaner, predictable, and strong. He saw his minions, soulstealing and frightening shouts could become a nice complement to the fairly mundane tactics of the army.
My Guardian is a giant of an asura, as tall as a little human, and as dark as tar. He’s an extremely idealistic and benevolent member of the College of Synergetics, who decided to join the Whispers for 2 reasons: 1- He think he can be both a good sword and a moral compass for the order. 2- He fell in love with the fast, natural and unpredictable schemes proposed by Agent Batanga.
My main is a really short female Engineer from the College of Dynamics. Since she likes to experiment new things all the time, exploring the world became her major focus. She joined the Priory because she though they could support her search for knowledge, while she could offer them a good flamethrower to deal with all the dangerous things that populate the fringe of the known world.
that it makes every other class in the game boring to play.”

I love the detail you put into each class. Though I’m not out to make mine different to the norm.. I won’t be going cliché either. Glade stalker came from the idea of patrolling the perimeter of his land. I imaging him concerned with keeping his land and people safe. Using tracking skills and observation to hunt any danger out.
He sounds like great Order of Whispers material! Since those who awakened in the Cycle of Night tend to be secretive and independent, and with a pet stalker at his side… He sounds like he prefers working quietly to keep everyone safe (not much of a glory hound, is he?), so I can see him as an Order of Whispers Slayer: on the wiki it says they’re “members tasked with taking care of dangerous threats to the Order.” And if he happened to somehow get caught, he could charm his way out of the situation!
Personally, I had my Sylvari Ranger join the Priory, but that’s because she loves adventure and learning (she got along quite well with Sieran!). She awakened during the Cycle of Dawn, and her quality is charm, so she’s very friendly and is great at diplomacy. Since she’s now a druid, she’s very healing-focused, and loves helping others!
She dreamed of the Shield of the Moon, and she believes that the most important of Ventari’s teachings is “Where life goes, so too, should you.”
There actually is a small effect later on from your Order choice, e.g. Whispers members get to talk to hidden agents and go through a secret door or two. Nothing game breaking.
If you have enough alts, eventually your choice will be part “what is right for this alt,” part “which map zone do I want to have to go to,” and part “what haven’t I done for a while/what do I have the least of.”
Since you will be doing all three Order lines with your other alts, I would say find whatever you feel fits your ranger. My original character, a Thief, went Priory. But not as a scholar — as a guide/guard/conman schemer making a profit off artifacts with his half-brother I have a necromancer who went Vigil thanks to some RP around the time it became a choice that led her to believe she’d get a lot of gangrene cases to study. My street rat angry warrior joined Whispers since her role in life was to be the “muscle” in shady dealings. Etc.

No he’s no glory hound. Not one to be out seeking treasure either. He does tend to be a more independent and secretive person. It’s more at night you’d see him patrolling. I image he’d join the whispers as a scout and tracker. Undoubtedly hed learn more on traps and have access to more secret pathways to aid him in his purpose to keep his homeland safe.
