Hey all,

I am wanting to roll a character for the purpose of exploring the nooks and crannies of Tyria. I am trying to settle on profession (and to a much lesser extent, race).

What profession would you pick for jumping puzzles, soloing mobs, soloing elites/champions, exploring caves, etc?

Right now I’m leaning towards mesmer because they have stealth, access to torch for a light source in tunnels caves, and illusions to misdirect mobs to.

Are there any racials that you think would help with this?

Thanks for your input.

Race has no impact on effectiveness — except that the Charr and Norn, being bigger, can be a liability in some jumping puzzles.

The issue I found with Mesmer was that the profession has no perma-speed boost until you get Chronomancer (i.e., at level 80). Of course if you have enough tomes to insta-80 and don’t mind doing a bunch of HoT Hero Challenges to unlock Chronomancer, that would be less of an issue.

The majority of the folks who post jumping puzzle cheat videos are using asura mesmers and rangers. Probably because the little asura toon leaves the most map visible, but if you really just want to steamroll briskly across the land, small toons feel like they move much faster which is quite satisfying.

I would say Warrior or Thief would be your best options.

For mobility, Warrior can get an permanent 25% speed boost early on with Warrior’s Sprint, provided that you’re always holding a melee weapon, and has a lot of leaping skills; whereas Thief has a lot of teleports (Short Bow #5, which can be used multiple times so long as you have enough Initative) which can get you up a small hill or ledge you would normally have to run around to get up to.

In terms of combat, Warrior has the most room for error due to having one of the highest base HP and having access to heavy armor; Thief, on the hand, has better kiting options (i.e. Short Bow, Pistol/Dagger).

Try Ranger, I have played every profession and while they are all pretty good exploring the maps (Mesmers being noticeably slower) I would say Ranger is the simplest, most effective option! You ll never lack for support as you ll have your faithful eternally-juvenile pet at your side! ranged and melee weapons for any kind of scenarion, and quite a health pool to go along with! their sigils are very useful and the traits are great for exploration. although I do most of my exploring as an Engineer, I insist on suggesting Rangers as the better choice.

Yeah. Herald 33% perma speed boost.

I find the herald boring and not as fast as it appears. It has permanent swiftness, but nothing else. It cannot compare to Druid (permament swiftness speed + movement skills), Mesmer (permament swiftness and Blink/Portal) or Daredevil (permanent swiftness and a huge amount of dashes and instant movement abilities).

Stealth can be quite useful, especially for avoiding champions guarding certain Hero Challenges or rich mining veins. You could look up consumable items that give stealth for any profession and use those, if you like.

I have done map complete with every profession, but not every race.
I enjoy playing all the different professions, so there is not one that sticks out as the best, in my mind. They each have a different play style.
Hack and slash or run like the wind is my motto when dealing with mobs.
I did give up on the Charr toon for map completion, too blasted big and that lope, oh what a pain that is to deal with.
Norn also present a small problem, but the Norm females are skinny in comparison so the males, so that made it easier to see.

Stealth is situational since it’s generally a short duration effect. I don’t think it’s possible to permastealth anymore. Or else I’m doing it wrong.

I have a daredevil with stealth and I found it very useful while harvesting winter berries to just stealth before harvesting and ignore everyone.

In general you don’t need to worry about avoiding mobs, though. You might occasionally get slowed down for a bit, but mobs give up pretty quick if you just run past them. There are only a handful of mobs that when concentrated enough can trash you if you don’t try to deal with them.

You can’t go wrong with thief. They cover ground the fastest. They kill enemies quickly. They have stealth. For solo work against champions they have access to solid condi cleanse, CC, and self-healing.

The only downside is they have low base health. To mitigate this I recommend marauder stats. As long as you can take a hit, your evasion and heals on offense should allow you to heal to full and continue the fight.

The only thing I had heard of is a Trapper Thief with runes that give stealth on trapping, and apparently you can somehow achieve permastealth with it. I have not heard that with mesmer, but mesmers do have portal which could be quite handy. Great info on daredevil and not really needing stealth to get around mobs; much appreciated.

It sort of seems like every class has something that helps make it handy for open world exploration: high runspeed, brute force, survivability, etc that could all be employed to my ends.

Thanks so much for all of the feedback, this is really good stuff.

Ranger for the ease. Pet tanks, lots of survival through skills and traits. And despite what the ingame ranger population seems like at times, it is even possible to NOT go pure glass bearbow!

Necro for not dying. Not a lot of experience with it myself, but with healt, minions, death shroud, and very good with condi builds so you can have more defensive stats it can face tank most things in pve.

Thief for mobility. There is simply not more mobile class than thief. 25% move signet fairly early, Shortbow has a repeatable 900 range teleport, another utility teleport, heal+util evade skills that also removes condi + etc. Some great bar breaking elites. Once you get dare devil combine DD with Acrobatics and a rune set that increases swift duration for about 20 seconds swift per dodge, and staff #5 Vault is your best friend in JP’s as it let you precision jump/target your landing spot.

Thieves dies to sharp grass though, if you really don’t like sitting on the edge of your chair, grinding teeth and trying to dodge and avoid every single attack, you may want to try something else, they can be pretty unforgiving for those that doesn’t enjoy the action combat.

Warrior can do everything. Basically put you can make a warrior do anything you want, not die, kill things fast, easy access low cooldown leap for JP’s, whatever you need.

PS: Lately had this fascination with actually using torches as light sources, and looking out dungeons and dark caves, and swapping to torches for the fun of it. But you can also get around this with specific skins. I’d recommend looking at the Cobalt GS skin, my favorite of the lot, and usually not too expensive. It’s absolutely fantastic to use in Obsidian Sanctum JP in the blackout zone

I agree. Thief is probably close to optimal for anything related to exploration. Mesmer certainly is better for JPs due to portal, but absolutely horrible when it comes to any way of killing mobs.

Celestial elementalist is really fun for open world. They’re super tanky, have great access to boons, and still deal solid damage for taking out enemies quickly. Run dagger/dagger and you get some decent mobility options besides.

Chronomancer is actually pretty great at killing mobs, in my experience. They can also move reasonably fast without spending utility slots on sigils and survive/win most fights solo. Of course, base Mesmer has far less DPS. Still, the portal is invaluable for exploration and jumping puzzles.

Signet of Ispiration for mesmers will help during the lack of chronomancer traits, it gives so much swiftness that you don’t even need a focus anymore.
that said there is nothing i can’t do with my mesmer when solo although the illusion don’t take that much of mobs attention if truth be told, they always go for me most of the time and also they die so fast they are unreliable as a form of mob distraction, they also die when the mob you are targeting dies which is annoying when fighting groups of mobs

-Rangers cause exploring and finding new pets to charm is a fun “mini game” on its own. Also has a torch and can stealth a little bit.

-Thieves cause they exceed at movement speed, can also be used to farm mats very efficiently (20g/h). They also have stealth, far better ones, as well as shadowsteps, perfect combo for mini dungeons and jumping puzzles.

+There is a torch of kryta or something like that in the laurel vendor. its a gizmo that allows you to equip a torch that can light the way. However it removes all your weapon skills.

There are numerous consumable items in the games that allow you to stealth, you can combo them for a easy 5seconds of stealth. They can also be used on any profession

Am I missing something about the torch?

Anyway.

I would say if you are leaning toward mesmer, go mesmer. Go with what feels right, mesmer has a lot to offer, in that regard I have my big three that i play the game with:

Revenant: From 1-80, things are kind of a cumbersome slog. You will get frustrated on those rare moments where you keep dying and ask yourself why you are bothering leveling this class at all. Once you get herald everything changes, farming and exploring on my herald is a breeze. Regen, Swiftness, and other little benefits make it worth it. You still feel like a brick and utterly useless in water however.

Ranger: This is a breeze… No, seriously, farming is easy on my Ranger. In PvE it is rare to have my health bar wiggle below 95%, if at all. You have a lot going for you, range, stealth, a pet to tank for you. On land, under water, your really cant go wrong. If you use them right some of your melee attacks come in useful traversing some maps. Out of my big three, ranger has been super casual for me.

Elementalist: My true main, I do everything with this guy … Staff is my go to farming weapon. I can burn down lots of things very quickly, so farming for me is fast. Let me say also my elementalist is my fastest character on passive, you have like 3++ ways to increase your movement speed. My elementalist rarely gets boring, because I’m always moving. Lastly having abilities that flat out allow you to ignore damage is great for those panic moments. Add on temporary pets, conjure weapons and more; all of it makes sure you have a tool for every occasion. Elementalist may be “squish,” but I rarely notice it unless I’m fighting champions.

My point in all this is that soloing and ease of soloing can be subjective. I like soloing on my elementalist, other people will despise it. If Mesmer feels right for you, go mesmer.

I personally find Elementalist to be the best class for open world and exploration by far

mostly because it can just wreck anything in open world that comes across its way like no other class can
The AoE damage potential is insane … and large hitbox enemies melt in front of you

Moblity is pretty good too even though it doesnt beat Thief or Warrior but i would say it can hold 3rd place with skills like Lightning Flash, Ride the Lightning, Fiery Greatsword and ofc having easy access to permanent swiftness

Sustain is not bad on Ele since you good access to hard and soft CC skills that slow enemies down, trap them or blind them and you usually just kill everything very quick too

I like Warrior too because it has really good mobility with a lot of Rush and Leap skills and can take a lot of nice shortcuts with those leap skills so getting around feels very easy and nice

The Damage potential for exploration on Warrior is definitly good enough but he cant compete with Ele AoE dmg
Sustain is great on Warrior though – high health, high armor, good life regeneration

Thief has very high mobility with Teleports and high damage but not so much AoE damage potential so you cant just run into 10+ mobs at once and kill them as easy on Thief like you can on Elementalist

And IF you get caught from enemies you die easier on Thief so you need to make sure that your dodges count

You can take nice shortcuts with the constant access to teleport skills though which again makes getting around feel very easy like on Warrior
And the access to Stealth allows you for easy retreats when in trouble too

My personal advice would be to take Elementalist
But:
It may take a while until you feel comfortable with the concept of Elementalist and the swapping between the 4 Elements and learning rotations in different situations
If you decide to chose Elementalist you can add me as a friend and ask me anything you want though

I found Mesmer to be not the most optimal class for solo exploration …
Mesmer shines in groups with incredible Support skills like Quickness, Alacrity, Shatter
Invulnerability, …
For Solo content it isnt has powerful as other classes though

But for Open World Content any class can do fine overall
So if you like the concept of Mesmer just go for it

Ranger as the pet will hold down enemies on their own.

Scrapper (Engineer elite) also is really easy thanks to stealth gyro (and maybe toss elixir S) if you want to bypass things. I run a juggernaut+ applied force build that while it sucks for damage (not really needed in open world) I like the quickness as it lets you gather/interact faster.

Mesmer is by far the most versatile class. However duo to its low personal damage. It is not that great to solo things with it. Even in openworld, you will notice this. Where you need to cast a couple skills. Kill a mob, have cooldowns. And basically aa another mob forever till your skills are off cooldown again. As where other classes can just keep killing stuff by just a few hits. You will notice this esspecially in new maps and group contents such as fractals or so. So simply put mesmer/chrono shines in group content couse of all the utility it has.

That being said, if you’re for a class just to explore and run around in open world with. Thief is your answer. High mobility and damage work really amazing there. But if you want to bring it to fractals and raids and such. You might consider warrior or elementalist. Those have pretty good mobility as well as damage. But unlike thief, they also offer support for group parties. As where thief is mainly just personal damage. And becouse of this, those classes are preferd by most people over thief in group contents.

Engineer for everything else: good mobility skills with Rifle, Hammer, Elixir Gun and Rocket Boots, permaswiftness with Streamlined Kits, amazing multitagging and multilooting with Flamethrower, decent solo DPS, autosustainable Might, great against mob crowds, elites and even some champions, easy access to stealth with the Gyro, etc…

“Only problem with the Engineer is
that it makes every other class in the game boring to play.”

As far as mobility goes I would say engineer as the rocket boots and jump shot make for excellent ways to get out of trouble and cross gaps. When you get HoT take the engineer to scrapper so you have the an invisible gyro that helps big time on farming. If you run into combat just pull out the flame thrower and make some BBQ. Before gliding in core Tyria I left someone on one side of a gap trying to figure out how I got across.

Necro by far. But also good are the following:
- Ranger
- Warrior
- Thief

But thief only if you are a fast reacting player since his HP is low and goes down fast. But it’s by far the fastest class – especially elite specced Daredevil.

A lot of good answers have been provided, but I will try to share my input as well.

Your ideal class will hugely depend on what do you want to achieve, and what kind of player you are.
If you want to be very efficient with your gameplay, thief is by far the best choice. They have the best mobility imaginable, very strong damage output and are pretty self-sufficient. You have a lot of dodges, massive healing even with offensive spec (thanks to invigorating precision) and best access to stealth, which will allow you to skip some difficult enemies with ease.
Engineer would be a close second. They share a lot of gameplay aspects with thief (such as high burst damage, self-sufficiency, access to stealth,…), except they’re slower. On the other hand, they are much more versatile and can adapt to different situations better than thieves.

If you’re a very casual player, who doesn’t care about efficiency, go either necromancer or ranger. You will move and kill stuff a bit slower than thief, but you will have much easier time doing so. Both of these classes are much more survivable (especially for casual gameplay) than thieves, while still doing fairly okay damage. You can take your time and easily solo even some of the harder champions without much effort.

Other than that, it kinda depends on your taste and preferences. You should pick a class that you enjoy playing and have some fun with it. Me personally, I have fun with every single class in the game, they are all amazing. You can do very well with any class, as long as you enjoy it. But if you want to go for efficiency, definitely thief.
