For newcomers it is often hard to decide what will their first character be.
So, what would you choose or recommend for them?

  • What race and/or profession you think will give best story experience.
  • What is your favorite race and profession.
  • What race would you like to see more populated.
  • Do you think some race is overpopulated?
  • What profession you mostly see and what you rarely see.
  • Do you think some profession/s are more needed for dungeons and/or other events.

If I get really lot of answers, I could make some kind of graph.

I’d recommend any profession besides Ranger and any race except Charr (the clipping is awful).

1) I honestly liked the Charr story quite a bit. Over say humans, asura or Norn.
2) Sylvari favorite, Guardian favorite.
3) Would like to see more Charr.
4) Humans are way overpopulated.
5) Mostly see Warriors/Guards. Rarely see Enginers.
6) Your heavy armor classes are more needed in dungeons than others. IMO. But I’ve successfully run them without.

I won’t stop because I can’t stop.

Why you can’t decide by yourself?
Why you base your own opinion on others?
Why why oh why?

Play how you want.

Welcome to GW2! Of course, a lot of this will depend on the person playing, but here’s what I would generally recommend:

- Sylvari is one of the more unique races of GW2, particularly with their story, so I would generally recommend them for the most interesting personal story. Profession has no bearing on the story.

- Thief is my favorite profession, but that’s mostly because I love high mobility professions that rely on an active defense (i.e. avoiding damage by player action instead of just absorbing it through high armor/HP).

- Charr, in general, seem to be one of the least represented races. Female charr are, unfortunately, very rare.

- Humans are the most abundant races, as in most MMOs.

- Warriors and Guardians are probably the most prevalent professions. Necromancers Rangers and Engineers are a lot less common (at least, outside of sPvP).

- A good ele that knows how to blast fire fields for might and utilize conjure weapons to maximize DPS is probably what I would like to see more of in dungeon/events, but there’s not really a huge need for certain professions in GW2 the same way as in other MMOs.

One thing I would warn new players on, however, is that there are some professions that are generally not wanted for a lot of dungeons/events. Necromancers, engineers and Rangers often fall in this category, although if the Ranger uses the right build (Spotter/Frost Spirit Sw/W build), they can be highly desired by some groups who are very picky about their composition.

Whichever you find most visually pleasing.
You have 5 slots and sPVP to find out what they are like at 80.

- Avoid the human stories, they’re boring. And I think the sylvari are too. Others are pretty good. Professions have no story bearing. Pick what suits you best.
- My fav race is asura, their animations and quips are the funniest. Profession: engineer & Mesmer.
- The world needs more asura. Master race!
- Oh by far, humans overpopulate Tyria. It’s absurd.
- Too many warriors and guardians. Wanna be different? Roll an engi or necro.
- This topic is far too hot and I generally don’t acquiesce to the accepted meta because I like variety more than I care about dealing the most dps. Plus, things will change tomorrow.

Races and professions are really personal choice.

Race doesn’t do much except for aesthetics. Theres no big racial bonuses to a certain stat or something like some MMOs. All the armors in the game are made for the human model and then scaled to fit the other races, so thats something to keep in mind.

Professions are a little harder. They all can be fun, but some I find more fun than others. Knowing how to play your class goes a long way in this game and that will make you have the best experience. So play around with the classes and find which one you like best.

- Avoid the human stories, they’re boring. And I think the sylvari are too. Others are pretty good. Professions have no story bearing. Pick what suits you best.

All races have good story parts. The human adopted storyline is probably to best chapter in the game. The sylvari has the white stag. Asura has infinity ball, Norn has a few but I honestly forget what I chose for my PS.

Just because you haven’t played the good stories for some races doesn’t mean you should just write them off. I havent played most of the charr stories (mainly because I can’t stand them) but i’m not saying don’t play a charr because they’re terrible.

this game is all about skins. not skill, not grind, not achievements. skins. Skins Wars 2.
the best choice – human female.
good choice – human male, norn female.
not so good – sylvari, norn male
worst choice – asura, both genders.

charrs have a lot clipping problems even with their cultural armor.

Race: whichever you like the best, look at them, and choose, it doesn’t really matter. Personally I love asura, those ears! Big floppy funny little things.

Profession: Warrior. It’s your basic middle ground thing. THere are aspects that will require some learning, but if you played any RPG in the past you know what a warrior is and what you can expect to do with it, it’s not much different than any warrior in any other game.

Now personally I’ve always been a more team oriented player, in that I like the support roles. So I went guardian to start and having leveled up a couple other professions, and dabbled with the rest… guard is still my fav so /shrug.

But still, IMO best class to start with in any game is the warrior, they’re always just the generally beefy, good damage, all around solid option. And lacking the tricks and what not other classes possess will make you focus more on the core mechanics of the game and master those, which is good for beginners.

And even if warrior isn’t your favorite, they are a great class to have available as they are pretty wanted in every aspect of content. So you won’t regret it I wouldn’t think, where a necro or ranger you may be kicking yourself for wasting time on something you don’t end up playing as often, I know a couple friends who did =).

I’ve spent about 500 hours in-game and I can say there is an insane amount of eletism, but most of it can be avoided by playing a Warrior. To a lesser extent Guardians and Mesmers, and you won’t find too many people who hate Elementalists. Personally, I like Thieves, but not many others do. If you play Engineer, Ranger, or Necromancer people will hate you for it.
EDIT: If you like dungeons, play a Warrior or a Guardian. A Warrior is wanted everywhere, and in standard group play the Guardian is loved all around. It’s very balanced and plays incredibly well with others without feeling underpowered when soloing things. Warriors are good for speedruns and while they probably won’t get in the way of anyone in a dungeon, they lack almost all of the support that Guardians have, though they more than make up for it with their DPS. They can also be pretty tanky, but Guardians will do that better.

I’ve played through all of them except Charr, which I’ve heard are good. Don’t presume. My opinion is my opinion. I didn’t like the human stories, and the sylvari ones were only ok imo.

What race and/or profession you think will give best story experience.
I can’t answer this without spoiling things. I liked some stories better than others, but they were all fun to me (I haven’t played through any of the human and norn stories).

What is your favorite race and profession.
Asura, because their animations are very well done (I think the other races seem a bit static at times – for example when humanoids hold 2 1 handed weapons or a Charr default stance), they’re tiny, cute, smart and funny.

What race would you like to see more populated.
Charr that are not heavy armored.

Do you think some race is overpopulated?
Humans. By faaaar.

What profession you mostly see and what you rarely see.
In PVE: I see Warriors and Guardians most (I end up with 3 of those in my parties) and Engineers are the rarest (I go “oh cool, an Engi” when I see one in my party and yesterday I was very surprised to see 2, which I wouldn’t even notice with any other class)

Do you think some profession/s are more needed for dungeons and/or other events.
The only class that isn’t really needed in dungeons is the Necro. They have selfish skills and everything they do another class can do too + that other class has useful party skills. The only thing they excel at are conditions and they’re not the best in dungeons. That being said, I have a Necro myself and I think she’s very fun to play in dungeons and does just fine (people don’t care what you run unless you join a “speedclear” group). For events: anything with AoE is great, so that means Mesmer is less effective, but they’re still very nice to have for their utilities (it’s just that you as a mesmer get less loot :P).

With regard to hot chick toons the female human(usually ele) wearing cultural t3 armor is overdone. Lets hear it for the norn females, I like their sturdy farm girl looks.

The Goderators have ruined this forum for me.
