I’m sort of a rookie when it comes to farming tactics and money-making, so I currently only know of Silverwastes farming, which is what I do; salvage rares in order to get me some juicy ectos.

Though am I missing out on other, far more reliable and fast ways to get them? What other ways to go about doing it are there?

You can do the Boss Circuit. You’ll get at least one with each boss and they spawn every 15 minutes. It’s most effective once a day per account. Doing it more than that (on a second char) and you’ll lose the guaranteed rare, though you’ll get the big chest.

Be careful what you ask for
ANet may give it to you.

SW is currently the only fast way of obtaining rares, everything else will take a couple of days at least.

In addition I run dungeons and exchange the tokens for rares/exotics to salvage. Gives ectos, dark matter and exotic inscriptions. This gives a decent gold income (for now..) so you can just straight up buy a couple ectos as well.

After farming for a while you should have enough T5 stuff to craft a few of your own rares. I typically make 50-60 greatswords after a week of farming.

Silverwastes. You get a bunch of rares from there. Then salvage them with BL kits.

I’d agree with this before Megaserver implementation. Now, you’re best off doing Silverwastes’ Breach + Vinewrath. No faster way to get rares to salvage at the moment. Don’t bother with World Boss trains anymore unless ArenaNet fundamentally changes the World Boss/Server/Instance API feature.

Information accurate until after HoT launch.

Silverwastes, both from the rare bags and Mystic Forging all the greens from the other bags into additional rares is the fastest way hands down

After HoT release, who knows, maybe that and a combination of the new map event completion rewards

What if HoT turns out to be the Mordrem Invasion event, x100?

If you farm rare items in SW, then it is event maps you need to look for not chest farm. You get a lot more rares through the event chain then you do with chestfarm.

Once HoT is out Map Rewards will let you target materials you need for your crafting or other needs. Included are T6 mats, loadstones, and ectos. Every 2 events you complete on a map (other than levels 1-15, Dry Top or Silverwastes) will drop one of the map bonus rewards.

Until then, Silverwastes Event maps + Mystic forge is best. Though I do the boss runs also and that yields between 10-15 ectos for a full set of bosses.

This deserved reiteration. We can craft our own ectos. All that mithril and elder wood turns quite nicely into rares for breakdown. -Sid

Terrible idea as far as making-money is concerned, what the TC was asking for too.

Master/Mystic Salvage kits are best for rares. BL kits are best used on valuable rune exotics.

Or you could craft high value rares(GS, Staff, etc.), sell those on the TP and buy back way more ectos.

I did try that, and it could have been due to ineptitude on my part that I didn’t see a better rate of return than Silverwaste/minor rare crafting, but that’s what happened – I ended up getting more ectos doing the SW/crafting runs. I’m finding purchase prices for ecto globs seem to average 41s a unit, but I don’t think I’ve ever crafted anything short of Spiritwood Planks that helped me generate enough profit on the trading post to justify the expenditure.

Perhaps RNGesus has just been kind to me.

GS rare go for 60+s, Staff same or more. So instead of salvaging the rares, sell them.

Yeah I price check every rare, anything above about 42s I sell and get the guaranteed ecto value. Stuff up at 60-70s can be sold and that money used to buy 2-3 rares for a potential 0-9 ecto.
As I was forging hundreds of greens I actually started setting aside all the GS/staves to forge specifically to get rares of teh same type.
A bit tedious and makes managing the space more complicated but turned out at least a little more profitable.

Ecto gambling MIGHT be faster than anything else, but at the same time, you MIGHT just end up loosing everything. I can’t stress the “MIGHT” enough.

The time you spend looking up the TP, buying more rares to salvage, using mystic forge etc could also be more time running SW, etc. I tend to just salvage my green items too since the mystic toilet seems to be a hindrance more than anything else heh

SW event map all the way. Be sure to use LFG to find maps that are in progress if you end up on one with no progress and nobody caring about events. Alternatively, when that happens, you can taxi people in and get an event run going (just don’t waste your time trying to turn a chest farm map into an event map).

Or words to that effect.
