Big events and server capacicity
The max for teq and wurm is 150, the max for pavillion is about 40. They do this so that the players for the most part are not looking at stillshots on the screen instead of video, and in the case of pavillion so it is not just a question of zerg tactics. You can force your own instance by all going to the map at the same time, this fills up semi capped maps and creates new ones.
The best way to alleviate this problem is to let us choose our map copy from a drop-down list (aka, district system) and to put a queue on the maps like the WvW maps have.
It would not eliminate the need to get there early to get a good map copy (unless you’re TTS and have 150 people ready to go.) But it would make it much easier to find the copy you want, and it would make waiting to get into a full map 1000x better.
I have to agree with OP, whenever I come 5 minutes before to tequatl or wurm it’s always to one of the instances with inadequate players counts. The issue is not with the max number of people but with the fact that you’re more likely to end up in a under populated instance with a lower likelihood of success.
This map mechanics kittens me.
