I opened a Black Lion Chest today and a Miniature Hawk dropped. Normally, I’d be thrilled, but it happens that I have owned that mini for well over a year since it was first released in a package of three birds – the owl, the hawk and the raven. I really like the idea of the mini, but since it’s account bound I can’t sell the item and choose something else on my own with the proceeds. It’s one thing to be able to correct it yourself, but otherwise, I feel like the programming on the Black Lion Chests should include a comparison to the existing mini-catalog for the account opening the chest to prevent this problem in the future.

Aside: I did open a ticket and ask if support would simply give me a different mini. The answer was no and please go talk about it on the forums, so I did. Thx!

IDEA 1: It would be nice if the mini you got from the chest wasn’t decided for you- when you double click it, it would come up with a drop down list of which you’d like.

I really like these account-bound minis and it’d be a shame for that feature to be removed. With my suggestion, you wouldn’t get duplicates unless you chose to.

IDEA 2: Offer a “Miniature Claim Ticket” instead of the mini, work it similar to how the BL ticket system works now (but without the whole 10 scraps -> 1 ticket thing). You speak to a representative to be able to exchange your Miniature Ticket. When new exclusive-series minis are brought out, older ones are still available but cost more tickets.

Miniature claim ticket sounds good, I’m sure this has happened to many not just the OP and also a way to use up the Mini Queen jennah

Same problem with the SAB minis that dropped from the chest. I got a mini Bee Dog, my second and I can’t sell it or forge it as I have no other minis to forge.

I guess I could buy 3 cheap minis off the trading post and hope they can all be forged.

This is kind of a rip-off, to be honest. Not only can you do nothing with a duplicate mini, but it’s taking up a prize slot from the chest that could have been filled with something of actual use. The weird thing is, not all minis are account-bound. I got a duplicate Mini Kasmeer the other day, and while it was a let-down, it wasn’t a total loss as I could still sell it for a couple gold.

I think the “mini claim ticket” idea is great, or failing that maybe duplicate minis just don’t get flagged as account-bound on acquire.

I’m fine with the mini Queen Jennah, because it was free and we didn’t have to invest/purchase anything to get it. It’s useless to have multiples, especially now that minis are account unlocks, but it’s not like we’ve “lost” anything because of it.

The hawk should be forgeable.

Had this exact thing happen to me a few days ago. I was first thrilled with a non-trash drop, until I realised that I already had one and it was account bound. Meanwhile, a friend has had two tradeable mini Kasmeers in the space of a few days.

Yea I’m sitting on 2 hawks right now. Waiting for something to happen maybe I don’t know.

Same issue (and was also instructed by customer service to post here about it), I don’t mind taking my chances with the RNG when opening a Black Lion chest. However having now 4 (6 if you count the ones that unlocked the minis for me) copies and counting of minis which are instantly account bound off of a random drop, well that’s discouraging to say the least.

I’m a player new to the game, several weeks in at this point, and I’ve been enjoying myself quite a bit. I’ve pre-purchased HoT, picked up a few skins, and spent gems rather consistently on unlocking Black Lion chests, but honestly I’m not really inclined to continue doing that when one of the results of spending my money on gems for keys can be “here have another copy of this mini which will only take up your storage space”.

If I could do anything with with the minis; trade them, sell them, give them to friends, use them in the mystic forge, I’d be quite happy.

Just like the OP I was thrilled by getting these minis the first time they dropped for me, but having payed for the instantly account bound extras to fill up my inventory off of a random drop was disheartening.

Anyway, thanks for taking the time to read this, and for the overall great experience provided by GW2 so far and hopefully this one rough patch can get some polish

That would be more than satisfactory. I was hoping we might see an update to these mechanics along with the HoT release but I imagine they have their hands full for the moment. Hopefully we’ll see this issue addressed sooner (say before the Christmas items go on sale in the gem store) rather than later.

Any further word on this topic?
Sorry if it’s been addressed somewhere, being in Uni makes it hard to properly keep up on the forums any info would be most welcome
