So, i seen this post.

I figured well, i better buy some keys and try my luck for the Black Lion Ticket scraps. I bought 10 keys. Out of the 10 chests i got 3 Black Lion Ticket Scraps. I was super excited. I looked up the Black Lion Ticket Scraps on some wiki post and seen i need 10 for one skin…..I figured ok maybe that post was wrong. Checked another post and it also had 10.

So at the end of the week the “Cost will go up” are you out of your minds? At this rate, i would need to spend like $50 for keys since they NEVER drop. I mean like never.

I guess my question is. How many Scraps did you get on your chests? and how many chests did you open? Did i just run into some bad luck?

No, in fact, your luck was actually pretty good seeing as how you got 3 out of 10. But you did end up learning a valuable lesson.

Your estimate of $50 seems to be close to average from what I read on the forum, unless you get a lucky ticket.

The RNG is really too bad to be paying real money for keys. For that price and those odds you are better off buying gems with gold or doing key runs.

lol! $50 per skin was too cheap for them. if they keep this up enough, then hopefully people will catch on how bad the return is and stop buying keys so they bring back fair prices.

10 keys = a little over $10, right?

That’s a pretty low price for an important life lesson – gambling boxes in MMOs are a scam, and you should never, ever buy keys. Not in GW2, not in any game. Just say “no” and maybe game developers will one day start developing games again, instead of running borderline-legal casinos for minors.

Thanks all. lol i did learn a life lesson. Just curious though. I been playing now for almost a year and the Black Lion keys seem to almost never drop. Is this on purpose? I’m just really confused why i never see them. I did get them on Story missions or Map completion and on some mob drops but maybe ever since Halloween it’s been unusually rare.

1 – A nice little perk to get a free thing from the cash shop to open a chest.
2 – A way to hook players into the gambling nature so they buy more (something good will be in the next one)

Think of it as a Casino rep handing tourists a $10 chip or drink voucher to come in and try a game. It’s a neat little free thing that they are hoping leads to you spending a lot of money.

I don’t want to sound totally cynical so I will add….GW2 is a beautiful game and I fully support buying gems. Buy them to get skins. Buy them to get gold. Or character slots, bags, minis, event items. Whatever strikes your fancy.

If you are raking in dozens of hours of entertainment, then why not throw them a few bucks here and there to keep the studio healthy while getting something that improves your game experience in some way. But unless you are a gambling sort, stay far far far away from black lion keys and special event chests. Odds are heavily against you that you will get the thing you want from it and you will only end up getting upset.

Know exactly what you are getting for your money and continued support or pass on it. This sends a clear message to developers. We get more of what we want, they get more money, everyone wins.

Key runs is what I do. I had a stash of 26 keys from that. Was lucky enough to score a ticket. I got bit once by these RNG chests and I refuse to pay money or gold for keys now. I buy $10 of gems a month and buy non RNG items.

That’s how I got a fused ticket. Key dropped, opened chest, ticket dropped. Never since has my luck been that good.

In the past I’ve ben a very good supporter for the store including my CE, I must have contributed over 600 to Anet. It’s exactly this news that made me stop purchasing gems. Anet the honeymoon is over no more support for the store I’m done you’re getting too greedy, and I don’t like fat cats.

There’s nothing wrong with this.

You knew before this game came out that is was not Pay To Win. All the purchases are cosmetic.

And is it shocking that some cosmetic items are outrageously expensive? No, it’s not.

Better yet though, the game has a ton of other skins available that you are still able to create a unique character.

So there’s nothing wrong here. I don’t know about you, but companies exist to make money. Anet needs to make money in order to keep making content. And the way they make money is selling keys for the small chance of being rewarded with a skin.

Yeah, it sucks, but oh well. We can’t get everything for cheap/free.

I would be willing to bet people would pay for any ticket to trade in at a vendor for a item of their choice. You don’t have to put all the skins in the store keep it like it is and sell the “Golden Ticket” for a price. I would have purchased several of these from past events. Where in reality I have not purchased one key for an RNG box. I could pretty much guarentee their sales would sky rocket if they did it that way.

All this elitism for rare skins is ridiculous. All these skins show is that you got lucky nothing else. So why not give people what they want and make money in the process? You cant really compare the Wintersday weapons because they were pretty cheesy.

Once every 2 months I buy 1 key for a chance at an everlasting tonic.

Still haven’t gotten one… but…. oh well….

Tip: You DON’T have to level up at all. You can rush straight from the very first quest and complete all quests up to and including the lvl 10 one from the very start of the game. I do so and usually finish the lvl 10 quest at about lvl 4 or 5 from all the level ups from the quest rewards.

Personally I found human, middle class story to be good for this, I found this very early on, then read on forums and saw on youtube that everyone else prefers this path too lol.

You can pre-make gear for your character to use just don’t go any higher than masterwork (so that it remains account bound). Having the Deluxe game or whatever it’s called really helps too as you can access your gear (bank) right from the start of the game.

PS, did a few low lvl quests on one of my alts earlier today and noticed there are now NO cash rewards for quests. Anyone else notice this? We used to get some good cash for the 1-10 lvl quests and now nothing. Maybe because of all the key farmers?

Anet are aware people farm keys. They wont remove it because they know that even 40 mins of game time for just 1 key is still a long time. Besides I still stand by my previous statement on another thread that they are NOT desperate for cash, believe me if they were we would see a lot more cosmetics in the store and all this rng would go flying out the window. It’s only here now to encourage people who want to be “one of the lucky few” to continue buying these keys so they can be exclusive. If the RNG was gone we would see a whole other player type buying the cosmetics and I can assure you there would be a ton more sales.

I will never do it. And main reason is: i farm money in real life much faster. So if i want to buy a key – i will buy it for real money. So i don’t think arena will remove these keys from personal stories. Because they don’t care if some kids will get a key and will use it to obtain some bytes in theirs database. TBH I only discovered this method of obtaining keys as I made a new alt one day to try an alternate storyline option to the personal story to see how they all played out and I had a blast doing so.

I had so much fun just bowling through the mobs and thought well if I can get a key every time at level 10 I may as well do this now and again whenever I’m bored and can’t be bothered doing something else. It’s kind of like buying a scratch ticket where you could win a nice prize – half the fun is in the scratching off.

I never farm more than maybe 2 runs in 1 day and heck I can go months without even bothering to do a run at all. It’s like I said if there’s nothing else to do in game and if I’m short on BLTC salvage kits then I look at running for a key. :P

Personally I wish they would add a new type of mini dungeon to replace this. Perhaps some kind of small solo dungeon that randomises the rooms every time you run it with a chance at some nice rewards including keys. It’s small little minigames/diversions like this that can add to the spice of the game and give us something different to do now and then when bored with the other main aspects of the game while as I said giving us a chance to get some nice prize. :-D

Oh and I am very mature (old) even tho I may not act it sometimes, but rest assured I am no “kid” :P

TBH even if I was a millionaire I wouldn’t buy these keys still on matter of principal. RNG has to go. I wont go into the why’s, when’s, where’s, how’s, what’s or whatever right now as I’m too tired but thanks for the suggestion. :P

I’ve seen there’s one of two outcomes:

- They work for their money instead of getting it given to them as an allowance, so they get a bigger respect for it.

- They blow it and wind up learning working and being broke is no fun.

Whether they change their mind depends on more variables but I’ve seen grown adults be completely careless with their money for less

I guess ill reply to some of these comments. I maybe only opened a few chests in my time of playing and the rewards were very bad. I didn’t even think twice about the black lion chests until i seen this post from Anet.

the onus shouldn’t be on the kids to learn how to be responsible with money, the onus should be on ANet to not market gambling to children. their RNG boxes are pretty much the textbook definition of gambling, as it’s no different then playing a slot machine. it’s illegal to even be inside a casino if you’re under 21, it’s illegal to sign up to online gambling sites if you’re under 21 and the majority of those were shut down years ago. yet….. somehow, this escapes scrutiny even though the only difference is that the kids get imaginary pixels on a screen instead of cash when they hit the jackpot? well, japan saw through the BS and outlawed this sort of crap last year, because they saw it for exactly what it was. perhaps every black lion chest should come with a phone number for gamblers anonymous?

This trick has not been a secret since the 3 day head start. Anet knows about, but they don’t care, because at the end of the day it is faster to buy them.

And tbh, all signs point to GW2 not exactly struggling to make a profit.

I’m not a kid either and I do have a job as well, I prefer to use my real life money on my satisfying things like shoes and shoes and more shoes even, spending 30 minutes or so farming a key improves the quality of shoes and underwear I buy. ;-)

It is a different problem. They must add something useful to compensate. But they add useless _ boosters, logging axes etc. When you get gathering tools for example you feel yourself cheated because “Black Lion Logging Axe” = 1 silver. While 1 key ~= 3 gold.

The onus is on the parents or guardians to know what their children are up to, and whether it is potentially harmful. There is no person, or group responsible for raising a child which is not the parent or guardian.

I’ve had this conversation too many times as a teacher, with teachers, and with other people who felt it was their obligation to raise children in their classrooms or groups. No. It’s not their responsibility, and it sure as heck isn’t something I would ever . . . ever lay at the feet of a corporation.

actually, japan made it illegal over a year ago. their reasoning was that marketing gambling to children isn’t something they feel should be allowed to happen. the asian market adjusted, and removed their gambling systems in anticipation of that law coming in.

That depends on too many variable details, but I think the answer would be “yes”. Not a certain “yes” because it does depend on a lot of other things. I mean, one teacher had a “Wheel of Fortune” in their room you could spend bonus tickets (for answering questions in class) and that slipped by for ages. Similarly “grab boxes” which were rewards for best homework grade . . .

So, no, I don’t think I’d lose my job over it. But it would depend greatly on several factors.

On the topic of “gambling in GW2”, final note? I sincerely think it could be a problem but I’m not about to tell someone who earns their money and spends it on what they want “you are wrong” unless it’s illegal in the location they are doing it. They want to throw away their money? That’s their problem. Parents have a problem with their kids doing it? Raise your kids to understand probability better.

Excepting Gem Cards, the other means of getting Gems to purchase a huge bunch of Keys is to input a credit card or Paypal account. I don’t know for sure, but it’s generally accepted that if you have a credit card you are financially responsible enough to make your own decisions that way.

actually, japan made it illegal over a year ago. their reasoning was that marketing gambling to children isn’t something they feel should be allowed to happen. the asian market adjusted, and removed their gambling systems in anticipation of that law coming in.
