Blackgate server
Ive had a friend try for weeks to transfer over, Finally he gave up and quit the game because we couldn’t WVW together. So goodluck…
Ah, the Blackgate dream. It’s like illegal immigrants trying to get across the border.
I paid $60 3 years ago to be on Blackgate. Money well spent despite the fact we get our butts handed to us by Jade Quarry almost every week.
bummer. And I don’t really want to transfer off for real money Was hoping they’d open it up a bit now with the free to play thing going on.
Now that it’s free to play GW2 I have a friend that would like to play with me. Now that he can play for free to check it out he can’t get on Blackgate since it’s been full when he’s tried. We do want to wvw mainly so this is important. Are there times when this server may be open or are there plans to open it up to more players? Just curious.
Thanks
Nope. Alternatively, you can also make a free alt and play with your friend or transfer one of your accounts of off BG.
He’ll just have to keep on checking it. There’s no particular times when any server is “open”. It’s just to do with the population at the times he attempts to join.
Last I heard there was a bunch of WvW guilds leave BG for another server about a week ago.
From what they’ve said the population rating is based on WvW participation now and not on the number of accounts on that server. These ratings are long based and won’t be changing frequently. It may be some time before attrition drops the numbers down and the long term WvW metrics fall enough that places open up on full servers.

Well it would be like that if illegal immigrants couldn’t actually cross the border.
World population changes are coming July 28th
This should be rolled out tomorrow.
To answer a bunch of questions that I’ve seen on this thread:
- The price to move to a server of a given population level isn’t changing. What’s changing is the way population levels are attributed to the servers.
- I won’t detail the way the new algorithm works, because I want to minimize the risk of people trying to game it. That being said, I am confident it is robust against such attempts. It’s not looking at a short period of time, and it’s looking at many aspects of the ways players are interacting with WvW to determine a server population.
- It will continue to be impossible to join or transfer to Full servers. It is possible that some servers are going to be marked as Full for a long time. While I understand this can be annoying for some, this is necessary to create a better experience for everyone.
- I agree that asking new players to chose a World before doing anything in the game is odd, now that Worlds are a WvW concept. This isn’t something we can change easily, however, but I’ll keep it in mind if an occasion arises.
- Please keep in mind that this won’t have an immediate, instantaneous effect on your WvW experience. The effect of the change will take some time to be observable from a player perspective – it should however be visible pretty quickly on my side, and I’ll make sure it’s going in the right direction.
Once this change has been deployed, I’d like to hear what you think about the population level your server now has. Specifically, I’m interested in hearing about feelings of mismatch (like “my server is marked as full, but feels really empty even at peak time”).
Thanks for the feedbacks so far! I’m glad most of you are liking this change.

So sounds unlikely that he’d get on blackgate then. Guess I could start over with him or just pay the money to move. Problem is there are others that I’m not sure would want to move. Figures I chose one of 4 full servers to call home.

Since he has free to play he has to get to level 60 first anyway. Why not get a free account yourself, level with him and play WvW on his server when he is on and your server when he is not? If he ever gets on your server you can abandon the f2p account. Of course there is gold loss from not being able to transfer any gains to your main account unless you upgrade it (might be worthwhile if the price of the expansion drops). Another consideration, he might not stick with the game and if you transfer out, you might find him no longer logging in after the “honeymoon” is over and you’re stuck on a server you don’t want to be on.

Tier 1 servers and BAGgate are probably going to be full and remain full throughout the coming days….Theres little to no chance your friend will make it in to BAGgate..

BG is a tier 1 server. This week, Yak’s Bend of T2 was randomly assigned to a T1 match-up and BG assigned to T2. This has been a possibility for several weeks now; this is just the first time it happened. Tiers are assigned by ANet on the basis of rank and only the top three are in T1. Currently all T1 servers have a “rating” of 2100 or more; YB has 2079 and FA/SoS have ~1850.
Alternatively, one could argue that YB is T1.5, since its rating is closer to the three technically T1 servers than to the technically T2 worlds. Either way, BG is still a T1 world and will be more likely to be fighting TC & JQ again next week than YB is. (At least for now.)

This isn’t a bad idea I suppose and maybe I’ll do that. Thanks guys for the responses.
