The true title of this topic is “Waiting around for ages for Bloodstone Crazed Creatures to spawn, and how annoying the playerbase to no end can and will cost revenue.”

This event is absolutely absurd. I question the decision to create an event which seems to be 180 degrees from what this game has always stood for. You don’t just “jump into the action” this time. No, we sit around and wait, killing random mobs in a vain attempt to get some creature to spawn, and often, after wasting 40+ minutes or so, the rotation changes. This is a colossal waste of my and many other players times. To make matters worse, there is a rotation “break”, which wastes even more time. We don’t even know if these things are capable of spawning more than once on a given map during a said rotation. To make matters worse, more than once now, we have seen, after a “rotation break”, the ability to finally have this Levvi’s Device show us the new rotation, just to jump on a map and find out the thing is already dead. Queue more waiting, unsure if this thing will even spawn again.

Some people do not have hours to stand around doing nothing, just to become even more furious as time goes on. This can and does create a ripple effect which can alter future events!

The more a playerbase gets annoyed, the less likely they will do the following…

a)Keep playing. No chance an infuriated player is going to buy gems, or future expansions, if said player is infuriated.

b)Keep recommending it to friends and perhaps coworkers. There is very little chance of getting someone brand new to try out a free account, possibly leading to a purchase, if said player is so annoyed that they have nothing at that moment positive to say about said game. In fact, said player may even be capable of being so annoyed that they talk people out of trying it at all.

I highly recommend retooling this event to 2 spawns per rotation, 0 break, on all maps that they are rumored to appear on. This would ensure that people are gearing up for a bounty type situation, as opposed to waiting around for hours and getting infuriated. It was easy to implement this for the Bandit Bounties, so why does this have to be a complete against the grain banging your head against the wall type situation?

And as I was typing this, the rotation changed again. Another wasted hour.

I was wondering if these creatures are once-per-map, or if they can spawn multiple times.

if the former, I’m somewhat concerned about this event. given the current state of the multi-server system, it’s very difficult to change maps, and since there’s no way to tell if a map has killed the creature or not, you could be sitting on a map for hours, waiting for an event that won’t spawn.

Remember that notorious manifesto from back in the day? One of the things stated was Anet’s desire to eliminate “waiting to have fun”.

I’m here to ask what was Anet’s intent with this bloodstone crazed monster event? What did you intend for the experience to be like? Did you envision players forming a giant mega squad to cover all spawn locations and sit around waiting for 45 minutes or up to an hour and a half? Because that’s what we got. Waiting. And if people aren’t fast enough to switch maps and run to the boss, tough luck. You now have to wait a good 2+ hours for the next round.

I’m genuinely curious to know what the playtesters at Anet had to say about this content. Did they use dev commands to trigger the event artificially or did they actually wait and see what the real player experience would be like?

I don’t actually expect an answer, but I’d just like to let Anet know that this has been frustrating for a lot of players. My humble suggestion would be to reduce the time between spawns to around 10 minutes, and make them spawn on ALL possible locations at the same time instead of on just one random map.

According to dulfy they spawn once an hour in a set sequence. Guide

People have been using the LFG to form squads and spread out across the maps to both announce when they see one and to allow people to get on their map shard where the event is.

This event needs to be a lot clearer (where do we need to be? Where will it spawn? When will it spawn?). Also these creatures need to spawn in every instance of the map.

This is my experience with the event so far:
The device tells me to go for the Blood-crazed moa.
Apparantly this spawns in either: Snowden Drifts, Brisban Wildlands, Kessex Hills, Diessa Plateau when you kill enough moas (I needed a dulfy guide to find this out, this is not mentioned anywhere in game).

I went to Snowden Drifts, found many other players there waiting. Only a few were actually killing moas since there are only a few of them on the entire map and they take a long time to respawn. So I just decided to stand around with most other players. Then after about 20 minutes the device suddenly shows a Shark and Arctodus (where the hell was the Moa??).

Anyway, I go check Dulfy again
to see where the Bloodcrazed Shark spawns, I go to Mount Maelstrom, find a large group of players, wait for about 20 minutes again, then I heard the Bloodcrazed Shark was killed on another instance of the map…

This is what I posted on Dulfy’s guide

“Ok. My take on it after I did eventually get all of the beasties for the achieves.

The nodes were easy enough to figure out and find. The beasties were dependent on on three maps in their cycles within various IPs. It looked like they spawned Moa/Devourer, Arctodus/Shark and then Wyvern. No idea of how the timing of the cycle between them works but I did see some overlaps. Some saw the Moa/Devourer up but could not find any maps where they had spawned. (this was over at least a half hour period possibly more after they showed on Levvi’s Device)

Lot of folk went to squads spread over the spawn maps but the spawns were IP based so if someone pinged a waypoint you potentially could still end up in an IP that either had not yet spawned a beast or one had already died – no way of telling. I got to one map a squad leader had pinged only to find she was on another instance and luckily I was able to get there before the beastie died.

I like that Anet is trying different things. I think it is their hallmark that they are not afraid to try something and see how it goes and kudos for that. This one definitely needs some tweaks though."

I sort of like the idea of having to ‘find’ the beasties but the execution makes it really hard to get to where (which map & IP) you have to be in time which is incredibly frustrating.

I suspect they are by map/IP which makes it nearly impossible to figure out where they have spawned/died without someone on that map telling you they already killed it. I had one guy in a squad who asked over good half an hour plus for links to a spawning moa and no one in the squad had one pretty much after the first few minutes…… I got a ping from a squad leader which took me to a map with no event but thank goodness I was able to join her in her instance and get the beastie before it died.

Event definitely needs tweaking.

  • edit*** Saying oooh terrible design gives them nothing to go on. Say what you had issues with and if you have any ideas on what could have made it better for you put them out there…. Giving constructive criticism goes a lot further than UGH BAD DESIGN ME HATE.

Waited around an hour for moa to spawn…it spawned somewhere else on the map (not at the dulfy loacation) and when i waypointed…it was already dead, causing me to rage quit. The problem I have is that the device is WORTHLESS cause it shows the bosses that literally die within 26 secs with the zerg so you have to wait hours for something that dies instantly. Haven’t been able to get a single one. -.-

I’m not sure how and when they spawn, but I made all the achivements for that new little map in 1 day. Just go and play that map for fun and achivements will come to you. I wouldn’t just rush for them from the begining like I did.
1 day of fun and grinding and then 2 months waiting for something new?

That Bloodstone map did bring so much fun into game, but sadly just for short period of time. More maps and achivements like this should be added monthly and it would be great!

And achivements could take a bit longer. Right now you have to kill like 200 mobs or something? I would just increase that to 2500, so we have to waste some time there :P

You do realise you can do other things while standing around?

I understand that you want to do it now and nothing else but I think these events are much better experienced if you do them as part of the map experience. (as dynamic events were intended)

The problem with these questlike achievements is that they single out one event and people make the experience boring by just rushing them for the AP.

Anyway, I believe the things spawn as a certain number of the same creature type are killed. I haven’t tried out the event myself though but that’s what dulfy says. Standing around would actually be counterproductive.

Frizz, It’s my understanding that the boss has some very specific spawn mechanics and should we merely "go do something else" there is a very high chance you will miss the boss spawn.

There is a rather big question mark over map instances vs. Timers. There is so little we actually know about this event that it almost forces you to stand in a map and wait for the boss to spawn.

Very shoddy work Anet!

When you only have two or three hours to play the game each day, five hours is a long time.

I liked the searching for bloodstone shards bit of the new achievements. That was actually quite fun.

The creatures should be spawning on every map that they can spawn on when the radar tells us that they are spawning, or the radar item needs to tell us the higher likelihood of them showing up on a map. Either way, the spawn rate is ridiculously low or on some cycle that we don’t know yet and it is not fun waiting for hours with the radar constantly showing the moa and nothing spawns.

I got incredibly lucky and ran into the wyvern before I knew what was going on and then I sat on a map with no moa and shark for hours.

I have plenty of other things to do in-game that don’t involve waiting for spawns and I disliked reading in chat from other players that: “Oh, this is just like what other MMOs do.”

My response is as follows:
1. I don’t like that about other MMOs and it is primarily why I stopped playing them. Waiting all day for a boss to appear only for the zerg to instant-kill it is not fun or engaging.
2. GW2 is better than that. We prided ourselves on being different and for the most part, I think the game is different from most other games on the market; just my subjective opinion.
3. Just because other MMOs do it is not a defense for this style of gameplay. I don’t like this, but others may like waiting for these events. I wanted to go do something else on the map, but didn’t want to wander too far in case the event spawned, so I ended up jumping up and down in place… because I was bored.

The content is new. There’s no reason anyone has to do every creature in one night. Ther’s no real reason to do every creature at all, unless you have absolutely nothing else to do or you’re so crazy about achievement points that you MUST do this event.

If you want the reward for the event, do the event, and take your time. If you don’t want the reward for the event ignore it.

In a week’s time the schedules will be down pat, the moa will be buffed (the only what that dies slow) and people will not even remember these comments.

But you know, it’s day one of a new series of events. Why does everyone feel they have to get everything done on day one and why do they make it sound like the end of the world when they can’t?

That said, I got it all done today anyway. lol

And I bet they’ll now complain they’re bored with nothing to do ;)

Let’s be real – I’ve been trying to do this, and frankly I’m bored as anything. I’ve been standing around in various maps for hours, and so far I’ve seen precisely one boss – and that died before I could get to it.

I get the strong impression that the spawns are:
One spawn, per boss, per rotation, per zone, per IP.

Which is maybe just about OK if you can get to the right map right up front, but hopeless otherwise. Miss the spawn, there’s no indication. T.b.h. it’s the sort of thing that makes me want to leave all the pain of working out what’s happening to other people, and go do it myself after a few days, once it’s crystal clear what’s going on. Whereas I OUGHT to be fascinated and stimulated to discover that for myself. Sadly, that’s not happening; I’m just peeved at wasting my limited playing time.

Edit: Just saw and actually got to another boss. By virtue of being in a suitable map within a minute or so of the device mini popping. After that – just lots of frustrated players asking whether or not it’s dead yet. Not really what you need from your player base.

That’s the issue here: the way the events are handled is frustrating players.

It’s not important if we old hands are sitting back because we know it’s best to not rush down and try to do the events as soon as they’re added, some people feel they have to and they’re being punished because they’re trying to play the new content. Perhaps they’re looking for the thrill of being there and discovering how things work for themselves. Perhaps they’re gobbling up new content the moment it appears because they’re bored. Perhaps they’re afraid that there won’t be anyone around to do these events in a week’s time. Or perhaps it’s simply the fact that over the last few years GW2 has trained us all that you have to get onto the right map early for events to succeed because of the way that first overflows and now megaservers work as much as anything (actually if a new megaserver is spawned because of players migrating there does the event occur on it or only on existing servers?).

Regardless of the reason, they’re popping events that are done by people on the map before you can even load onto the map and that’s leaving people unsure and angry.

Finally, and this is a general observation not directed any anyone in this thread in particular but there are examples here, “you don’t have to do it”, is really not much of an argument or a contribution. None of us have to do anything in this game at all. Ever.

Yeah, I wouldn’t call it perfect, either to be fair. It’s just that “waiting to have fun” is something you really never have to do, unless you’re going after specific events, for whatever reason. Which isn’t a problem with just current events as well as legendary collections as well as certain world bosses, meta events or simply the achievements in HoT.

I just tend to feel that if you focus on just one event with these current events, that they tend to be very limited. I usually just do these while things have died out and with very little stressing on whether I may or may not get the event, and explore the other events. In fact I haven’t really gone after the ley line events achievement for each specific zone, simply because I did them already and for just an achievement I don’t get much out of it.

And with events I do have to wait for I do tend to walk around and do some other things while waiting for the event. It’s a waste of time to just stand there and wait for a single achievement that is barely worth the effort of waiting. I can gain some materials, do some other events, complete the exploration if I hadn’t already.

But yeah, the dynamic event system doesn’t lend itself well for these specific focus quests, in my opinion. I much rather have new events that don’t have achievements and that feel like they spawn naturally out of previous events in the same locations, or random enough that it feels there’s things happening in the world, without said achievement hunt pressure attached to it that makes it feel so unnatural. Like is the initial intend with the dynamic event system. You don’t have an achievement for helping Shaemoor out with bandits poisoning their watersupply either, so why now.

This is probably the least well designed of all the current events

- no indication there are events unless u stumble across them or happen to check your current events panel. Anet listened to feedback on using the mail system to alert us to getting started and now have gone backwards here.

- Too much waiting around for mobs that do not really last very long

I’m all for these little extra events, but they are missing direction overall right now. LS3 was of a high quality, yet these events aren’t matching the higher standard they are setting themselves.

Honestly it’s poorly designed, the device has no set timer, people wait and sometimes for hours and don’t know what or when. It requires you to stay in your spot and not afk at all in fear that it may spawn when you’re not around….then you’d have to wait for it all over again.

Moa has a pathetically low HP, people hardly even get there and bam it’s dead. You have to get there an hour ahead…..

This is so poor. So buggy. At least give us fixed timers or make the device able to give notifications like the anomaly lodestone….This is severely disappointing. It’s not fun at all….

I suggest doing it now, because at the moment there are still squads covering a large amount of maps. This makes it easier to get to them. If there are no more squads left you are all alone and the bosses are spawning in Tyria maps, which have been empty since HoT.

And about the Moa. That guy has no HP at all. I stumbled across one on my own and I didn’t know about the events yet. I decided to just kill and it took me less than 10 seconds to solo it.

Not that expected much from a Legendary Moa but still…

This is not good advice. These threads are the only thing driving the context behind any metrics.

Anet can gather all the in game metrics they like, but players will still do them regardless, because they want the rewards. That is classic human nature, especially in mmo gaming.

Look at adventures. Many despise them, yet do them because they need rewards for collections and masteries. Players who hate pvp and wvw will often participate for rewards they cant otherwise get.

90% of players can be doing these new events (made up stat btw), yet it is meaningless if most them arent enjoying the experience.

ANet is most likely gathering data on how many people are doing these events. This situtuation is a variation of ‘voting with your wallets.’ If less people than expected aren’t doing the content, they’ll either change it OR won’t repeat it going forward.

The only person making you sit and wait is you.

I never said not to make threads, or do anything else one might come up with. But the fact is regardless if people are complaining about something, if ANet’s numbers show that it’s popular, they’re less likely to heed the dissenters. There’s always going to be a portion of the player base who’s unhappy no matter what they do. The metrics they gather from what players are doing is going to inform them of how ‘correct’ the complainers actually are.

By playing the stuff that you don’t find fun, you only encourage more development of the same… that’s the reality of it.

It’s also important to recognize that one size doesn’t fit all… what you as the player don’t find fun doesn’t mean it’s not good content for others. The game strives to provide entertainment for as many people as possible, and that means there’s going to be plenty of content that gives rewards you want, but content you don’t enjoy.

In all ways playing the content you enjoy over trudging through the stuff you don’t is the smarter choice… The metrics of what is played informs ANet of what content they should create more than a handful of complaints. Yes, I recognize those complaints are important… but they lose meaning when a player is a hypocrite by metrics.

It was funny reading chat after 1 of the creatures died tonight. The same thing everytime, they pinged the mask and typed FINALLY!

It’s the first day! I got 4 of the creatures in 5 hours and if I’d gotten the 5th, I wouldn’t have retorted with “Finally”, because 5 hours isn’t that long in the grand scheme of things.

And I bet they’ll now complain they’re bored with nothing to do

Standing around waiting for something to spawn is not what I would call “things to do”.

If you know the schedule, you simply need to show up on time, much like world bosses. At the start of their cycle, they’re going to spawn within a few minutes (~20 kills), and take a few minutes to kill. Personally, I just did them all and had no problem showing up every hour, killing 2 at a time. Dulfy’s schedule was not so accurate however, as there was an inactive period prior to the wyvern.

Remember that notorious manifesto from back in the day? One of the things stated was Anet’s desire to eliminate “waiting to have fun”.

Back in the day, world bosses spawned randomly, their respawn had a delay of up to 3 hours and was specific to the map instance. I remember zergs of people standing around for hours.

when you kill enough moas (I needed a dulfy guide to find this out, this is not mentioned anywhere in game).

They should just spawn, as it’d make more sense, unless they’re saying that you are infecting the creatures, which considering your bloodstone affinity…

Metrics cannot drive a game’s development. They simply do not provide anywhere near enough information and are usually always misinterpreted. Look at the legendaries. Few (probably) enjoy the actual crafting process itself because it involves lots of farming or lots of gold expenditure. For so many it simply wont be regarded as fun, yet it is necessary for the completion.

Does that mean Anet should create more grindy content because so many are making legendaries? No that would be beyond ludicrous for a games company to do such a thing. And there is no way players will simply not do it just because of one aspect is not too their taste.

Tangled Depths was a map which heavily divided the community. Yet ppl have to play it to advance. Metrics here are again largely useless since they wont show where any issues lie.

If everyone stayed away, Anet would still not know where the problem lies and since actually people’s complaints are specific to a couple of issues here, nothing would be learned for the future development of the game. It is fundamentally crucial for ppl to play the content so Anet can gather a better idea of what is and what isn’t working.

I guess I need to repeat myself: Metrics are not the only means by which the company can get useful information. But they are still important, and not to be dismissed so readily as many do. My posts above are only about addressing that one aspect that seems to be largely ignored – not the big picture as a whole.

Please, tell me how the metrics for MMOs are almost always misinterpreted? What are your examples?

Look at the legendaries. Few (probably) enjoy the actual crafting process itself because it involves lots of farming or lots of gold expenditure. For so many it simply wont be regarded as fun, yet it is necessary for the completion. Does that mean Anet should create more grindy content because so many are making legendaries? If that’s what people are playing, then yes. Because, if people are playing it then that means business for them. Maybe less people are “grinding” legendaries than you suppose.

Treadmill content is just one way in which MMOs keep players. The treadmill content that gets played the most will be duplicated elsewhere.

And there is no way players will simply not do it just because of one aspect is not too their taste.

Then more’s the pity for them for not using a means of entertainment they’re interfacing with to entertain themselves. The player is the only person responsible for entertaining themselves, GW2 is just provides possible vehicles for that entertainment.

Tangled Depths was a map which heavily divided the community. Yet ppl have to play it to advance. Metrics here are again largely useless since they wont show where any issues lie.

If they only look at metrics solely… which I never said they should. Again, I only state that metrics are important to seeing the bigger picture.

If everyone stayed away, Anet would still not know where the problem lies and since actually people’s complaints are specific to a couple of issues here, nothing would be learned for the future development of the game. It is fundamentally crucial for ppl to play the content so Anet can gather a better idea of what is and what isn’t working.

Yes they would know because there’s other feedback they’d have to draw on including the commentary here. Everything contributes to the whole. That doesn’t mean the parts are useless or should be ignored, including whatever information they gleam from player participation in the content they create, i.e. metrics.

You seem to have missed a point in your argument when you said people need to play the content to give feedback…. That’s true, but they don’t need to “grind” that content. And the information of what people return or how quickly content becomes unplayed is useful information in itself. Therefore isn’t an argument against anything I’ve stated – there’s useable metrics to be gleamed.

If you’re gunna talk the talk, then walk the walk. You don’t like content, then don’t play it. It’s that simple. Otherwise you’re wasting your valuable free time on something that gives you negative feelings. And on top of that you contribute to a problem in the game… assuming there is actually a problem in the game and not a problem with the player.

I finished mine extremely late last night, and like others in this thread stated, I said “FINALLY!”. I maintain my original post that this event needs to be retooled, and the vast majority of the responses I received agreed with it. It took literally all day to get 5 simple bosses, ugh.

As far as “now having nothing to do”, don’t be absurd. I am back to doing my normal routine now that I have my Kal-El eyes. See you all in the Silverwastes, Fractals, or random HoT maps!

This isn’t even the first event to leave players waiting huge chunks of time to actually participate in something.

  • The wait for the bandits wasn’t too bad. 10 minutes, usually.
  • The leyline anomalies were excessively long waits, and they scaled badly to group size. If I recall properly, the locations were on a 2-3 rotation.
  • The ley research teams (Consortium, Inquest, Priory) were stupidly long waits.
  • Now, this bloodstone animal thing. It’s not even worth hunting after, because their spawning is even more random, and they’re still on a 2-3 hour rotation.

There’s absolutely not excuse for this. Wouldn’t it have made more sense to trigger these events so people could actually participate naturally, rather than having to wiki/Dulfy it just to find out the event even exists?

Many alts; handle it!

This event design is godawful.

It’s really disappointing to skip doing other things because you want to do the New Thing, only to miss out because it didn’t spawn on your map, didn’t spawn at all, or died in twelve seconds.

So then you go “okay well i’ll try the next one in the rota- oh that’s dead too. what about the next o- whoops he didn’t spawn”

it’s now been 45 mins and you Alt+F4 and go play No Man’s Sky instead.

Get it together ANet. We love you but this sucks hard.
