Ok

So for those of you that don’t know what bartle’s taxonomy is:

It is basically a very old theory about why people play games, of which there are 4 over-arching categorizes: Social, Killer, Achiever, and Explorer. (For more information just google it).

Would you all mind posting below: why you play the game, what type you believe you are (Or if you think you are non of them/a mix), why you think this, and if you played guild wars 1 if you could please do the same for that. I am interested more in the mechanisms underlying each category (eg If you play to “achieve” is this the armour/weps/appearance/titles/recognition, if you are a social gamer what exactly is it about the social experience that draws you in such as the feeling that my team/guild need me).

to me gw2 is a fantasy dress up simulator with rpg mechanics and pvp attached to it. same goes for gw1 but the pvp part is primary.
that would put me somewhere between killer and achiever since in those games i find joy in completing outfits i put together and the demise of my opponents. by winning i make somebody else lose and their resignation makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside.

It’s def explorer for me, it always is in most games I play. Not only exploring in the sense of the map/world/lands but also the game mechanics as well as all the different races and classes. Of course here there are all the different personal stories as well so there is quite a lot for the explorer type person like me. Oh yeah all the recipes too, especially cooking I really had fun exploring and unlocking all of those.

Since when did this business of being a hero become being a business?

Initially I believed I fell somewhere between explorer and achiever, and would be polar opposite of Killer.

I did a quick test online and it gave me 80% Explorer, 60% Socializer, 40% Achiever, 20% Killer, though I believe the test was flawed in many questions.

An example:

“As a reward would you prefer, 1) Experience. or 2) An amulet to deal extra damage against another player.”

I have to choose 2) not because I want to deal more damage to other players but because Experience is an extremely abundant resource. The item (presumably) cannot be acquired as easily and I feel compelled to take it ‘just in case.’

Anyway, my thoughts:

Explorer:
I like to know where things are and how to obtain them. I’d rather know effective ways to farm materials or experience than to have boatloads of those materials at my disposal. I like when quests have minor hiccups and I have to find a way to fix it, especially when I can use that knowledge later to help others who may run into the same issue. Also finding and completing jumping puzzles without using a guide is a great feeling. I actually believe achievements can take away from this for me because I am often compelled to complete them all and that pushes me to use a guide to finish it quicker.

Achiever:
I feel like I’m also an achiever because its often the reward the drives me. I wouldn’t have spent an agonizing 6-7 hours doing Wicked Rodeo (broken up over 3 or 4 attempts) before I finally finished it if it weren’t needed for the Luminescent achievement. I wouldn’t try to kill enemies with Warhorns, Shields, Foci, etc. if not for the Weapon master achievements associated with them. I’m not an AP hunter by any stretch, but it feels good to have them done and out of the way. It’s something ‘crossed off the list’ so the speak.

Socializer:
I’m not the most social person. I often choose the servers with the lowest populations and I’d rather be in a guild of 10 people I know than 500 I kinda-sorta sometimes do. I still value the ability to play with others, though. I love being able to ask or answer random map chat questions. I very much like running into the same person in a Silverwastes map repeatedly and silently helping each other out.

Killer:
This is the type I thought I was most against by its very nature. I tend to avoid PvP in most games because of the hatefulness it often promotes (and because its so easy for me to get emotional and respond in kind). Despite this I feel one of the only true challenges in games comes from playing directly against and adapting to other players. I absolutely love when playing against friends and we are able to compliment each other on good plays or talk afterward about what we should or could have done instead. Almost like a chess match where you might discuss what you had been thinking or which moves surprised you.

After writing this I’m really not sure where I stand. I can see some aspects of each category in my personality (or perhaps I just misunderstood some of them). I still think I’m most closely linked to Explorer, but perhaps not as far away from Socializer or Killer as I originally thought.

I find it very interesting that very few socially orientated given the nature of the game being a massive multiplayer. Obviously the sample size is far to small so more posts would be required, however it seems like A-net really hit the Explorer and Killer on the head. Achiever is probably the most difficult one to pull over in the modern games market given the number of titles which all have a reasonable strong achievement aspect.

I would be interested to see the results of a game wide test.

Explorer-who doesn’t enjoy a good “lets escape the map!”

Social-oddly at the bottom, i usually lone wolf pve or solo queue pvp

As someone who actually works in real research involving this topic (player types and gamification), I can tell you that the bartle classification, although well known and often cited, is quite outdated and unreliable. The questions determining your bartle type are designed with very old game design elements in mind (originally dating back to the era of MUDs) and thus it is hard to answer them conclusively. Also, the categories proposed by bartle are both arbitrary and coarse to really provide any solid basis for argumentation (regarding further research – as a random item of interest they are fine enough).

There are other modern approaches I could recommend if you are interested in this topic, such as BrainHex, which provides an actual biological component in the form of brain activity and combines it with player types.

Per the OP’s original question, I’d say I fit into all four of those categories depending on what my mood is at the time I opt to play. If I’ve had a long stressful day, or I’m just in a bad mood, pvp is where I go. Time to kill some people, woot woot. If I feel like kicking back and relaxing, exploration and story are my typical go tos. It’s a beautiful world, so why not? Occasionally I’m feeling helpful or someone will say something in map chat that grabs my attention, which will bring out the chatty / social side of me. And then occasionally my inner skritt comes out to play and I feel driven to collect every achievement point I can get my claws on. Like this past weekend working through the LA Karka hunt collection. Despite repeatedly making myself motion sick, I just “had” to complete it.

So, given my current mood, I’m not surprised that the quiz result pegs me as thus:

Your BrainHex Class is Conqueror.
Your BrainHex ClassYour BrainHex Sub-Class is Conqueror-Seeker.

“The Strategist

22% Ace, 44% Effector, 44% Innovator and 56% Strategist!

Strategists are players that like to affect things, i.e. influence game results. Strategists are group-oriented, and as such often serve as great leaders or planners in their party, though they tend to take defender or healer roles on the field. Strategists highly enjoy communicating with others, and this is often one of the prime motivators for their participation in an activity. Games which are solely single player or do not include a strong storyline tend to be unappealing to Strategists unless it appeals to their secondary player nature.

Strategists are often instigators; they like to start games and form teams. Networking between players and other teams is also a specialty of most Strategists, as is knowledge building. They like to use their knowledge base to help them ensure party success, sometimes at a cost to their own character. Strategists can occasionally be narrow or esoteric in their focus, and tend to be slightly obsessive about gathering knowledge on subjects of their interest, but always use that knowledge in service to their compatriots. Offensive Strategists can take slightly more active roles on the field, but rarely play lead on an assault, preferring to wait in the wings for an opportune time to strike. Defensive Strategists often prefer to serve their team through healing or other forms of defense that keep them out of the direct line of battle."

Sounds about right. I am usually organizing Teq while also being on a defense team. I have even gone there with low-level characters and slipped into the same pattern.

Took both tests that were linked above – both with similar results and I can definitely recognize myself.

Your BrainHex Class is Conqueror.
Your BrainHex Class Your BrainHex Sub-Class is Conqueror-Achiever.
You like defeating impossibly difficult foes, struggling until you eventually achieve victory, and beating other players as well as collecting anything you can collect or doing everything you possibly can.
According to your results, there are few play experiences that you strongly dislike.

Your result for The Four Player Types Test …
The Ace

50% Ace, 22% Effector, 44% Innovator and 50% Strategist!

Aces are players that like to gain mastery and prestige, i.e. they tend to be achievement hunter types. Aces are self-oriented in that their experience and achievements matter most to them, regardless of group experience or involvement. This isn’t to say that Aces are selfish, but rather that an Ace is motivated largely by extrinsic rewards and might not see the benefits of group participation if no rewards exist, depending on their secondary nature. The definition of “reward” is different for every Ace— it might be loot, social recognition, badges/titles, or simply having complete control over their skills.

Whatever the reward, Aces are willing to put in the time and dedication necessary to achieve it. As such, they tend to be highly skilled at whatever is necessary to meet their goals, be it knowledge, combat skills, strategy, or other. This can sometimes result in Aces being generally uninterested in or unknowledgeable about subjects that do not serve their needs. On the field Aces tend to be highly offensive players, since generally a high offense is the quickest way to achieving their goal. If they wield any type of specialized skill, they will aim to be complete masters of it so that they can use it in precisely the best, most effective way possible. They also tend to be highly skilled in some form of fighting or weapon.

Hmm, I’m going to have to change categories a bit by saying 50% explorer and achiever each with being social sort of baked in both. Because there are many great single player games that I can explore and achieve in (which is why I play games) but I choose to play an mmo because I love to do this with other random people.
Or possibly I guess I could say 33,3333333etc% in explorer, achiever and socializer each?

I love to figure out the game – I love equally when it goes well and when I have to try and try until I want to throw the screen out the window and then the utter joy of finally succeeding. Having something that shows I finally managed is a great reward for me even if it’s just a bit of text in achievement list. And I love this equally between doing this with friends or with random people from around the world that just met. So awesome. =)

0% interest in killer. Only reason I pvp or wvsw is if I need any of the rewards for crafting or unlocking something. (I kinda feel bad for the ones that do take it seriously and then I pop in and don’t know what I’m really doing and ruining the play for them so maybe not ’’force’’ pve:ers into these modes anet?)

Or in the case of another mmo (SWTOR) I joined some of my guild mates in various pvp endeavors because they were really funny to listen to and they wanted me to heal.
Which was great because I totally blackmailed them into being nice and honorable towards the opposing side or I would withhold my healing powahs, moahaha! On occasion they wanted me to bring a dps character and then grumbled when I got more mvps or assists or whatever those lists were on about. Tho I didn’t give one iota of a kitten if I got killed or my side lost, I was just there to be social with my unfortunately bloodthirsty friends. XD

Hrm. Tried the BrainHex test. Found it a bit wanting in usability, so it skews my perception of the results somewhat.

Ended up with: Socialiser: 17 Mastermind: 13 Seeker: 12 Conqueror: 11 Achiever: 6 Daredevil: 3 Survivor: -2

I’m suspecting some phrasing or grouping issues that lead to Socialiser over Mastermind, though I do enjoy relaying shared experiences, even if it’s trading stories over single player games. I’m probably more Mastermind, sub-Socialiser, basically.

Should be surprised by how high Conqueror is, but Bartle’s theory actually explains it better. Tackling difficult challenges in the world is gratifying, but ruining someone else’s day is not. (Means I’m not a kitten, yay.)

From the Four Player Types test:
58% Strategist, 56% Innovator, 44% Ace, 11% Effector

Lol I guess this test does not take in mind too much of the explorer side:

Your BrainHex Class is Mastermind.
Your BrainHex Sub-Class is Mastermind-Conqueror.

You like solving puzzles and devising strategies as well as defeating impossibly difficult foes, struggling until you eventually achieve victory, and beating other players.

According to your results, there are few play experiences that you strongly dislike.

Mastermind: 18
Conqueror: 14
Seeker: 13
Socialiser: 9
Daredevil: 7
Achiever: 6
Survivor: 2

And the other:

30% Ace, 33% Effector, 72% Innovator and 33% Strategist!

Innovators are players that like to “seek”, be it seeking new places, new inventions, new skills, new knowledge, and the like. Innovators are self-oriented in that their focus lies largely on their individual experience and what that experience can do for them as players. While this might make Innovators sound selfish, many Innovators enjoy working with other players and using their skills to benefit a group. However, the group interaction is not the end-all and be-all of game play for the Innovator, and it’s absence from a game is not as detrimental to the Innovator’s enjoyment as it would be to an Effector or a Strategist.

Innovators are often investigators: they are drawn to a game because of the appeal of discovery, be it the discovery of new places, new possibilities, or even uncovering plots and unraveling riddles. Innovators enjoy learning for their own sake, whether or not their knowledge might benefit a group, and sometimes might be reluctant to share what they’ve found with others under the attitude of “go find it yourself”. They are not generally hoarders, however, and are usually excited to share their passions and discoveries with others if given the opportunity. On the field, most Innovators are to some degree mildly active players, and tend to take positions that allow them to use their knowledge and skills to make sharp attacks rather than prolonged straight-on combat.

I wonder if Anet had their own sort of test like this what they could do with the info from the majority of their player base! Just imagine what the shape of GW3 could be like. O.O

I consider solo “roaming” PvP to be the epitome of gaming. No one to rely on but yourself, in the middle of nowhere, anything can happen and everything comes down to your skill as a player. When it comes to single player games I prefer things like Dark Souls 2, etc. where you were never intended to actually win.

I have no sense of wonder (if I want to see beauty I can take a walk outside), dislike puzzles (unless they involve arranging corpses), and dislike commitment (my preferred mode of play is solo ganking in open worlds – sadly GW2 is not a good game for that).

Conqueror: 19
Survivor: 14
Daredevil: 8 (1v5? Bring it on! First one in, last one out).
Socialiser: 3 (Sorry guys, you are only here so I have people to kill. I don’t know your nor do I care to know you).
Mastermind: 0 (In group situations I prefer following orders).
Seeker: 0
Achiever: -4 (I don’t need to be on the top of the Leaderboard to be confident in my skill level I hack my Steam Achievements simply because of my OCD and I can’t stand odd percentages – I am that guy who manually alphabetizes his inventory and goes over conversations in his head weeks after they happened).

Seeker-Survivor here, without any rejected area.
Its ok, I do like to find things, be amazed and survive them, but I get fun doing all sort of things too.

In the Bartle’s classic one I’m a ESka, so it all seems legit.

Eh, I have a few minutes to blow so why not. Fairly expected results aside, it was fun :P

Not really sure of the “you channel your anger” and “punch the air” descriptions of conqueror really apply… at all. But I would argue the results were fairly accurate. That said, any amount of introspection could verify this by assessing one’s own interests and aspects they pay the most attention to. I will give it accuracy the descriptions on Conqueror/Daredevil + Exception, though:

Your BrainHex Class is Conqueror.
Your BrainHex ClassYour BrainHex Sub-Class is Conqueror-Daredevil.

You like defeating impossibly difficult foes, struggling until you eventually achieve victory, and beating other players as well as rushing around at heights or high speed while you are still in control.

Each BrainHex Class also has an Exception, which describes what you dislike about playing games. Your Exceptions are:

» No Commitment: You dislike being asked to complete everything, preferring to pick and choose which tasks you will attempt, or simply messing around with a game.

Your scores for each of the classes in this test were as follows:

Conqueror: 18
Daredevil: 16
Socialiser: 14
Mastermind: 12
Seeker: 5
Survivor: 3
Achiever: -2

I’m pretty sure more points in Mastermind and fewer in Achiever (yup, I HATE collecting/exploring) would be more accurate, however. Typically I invent and optimize builds, though usually only for the ones I plan to play.

Hell, still having 48% map completion on my most-played/most-discovered character having over 2.5k hours on it and playing since release has made me well-aware I’m not an achiever/explorer-type :P

Guess this helps explain why I have every single JP achievement and got all but one of them legitly (without mesmer portal hacks). Also why I hate PvP >.>

So… anyone with me to finish all the new JP’s in HoT?

Haw, omg, I was thinking of posting this after Extra Credits covered it. XD

We covered it in psychology recently and have just started moving into the more modern tests, which someone already posted (Brainhex). Very cool topic, and very interesting area of research, am thinking about focusing my post grad on it. That or health care psychology/marketing.

Just watched the Extra credit video and like 15 others, Awesome Youtube Channel.

I wish companies would offer a voucher for their other games when trading in, it would screw Game spot over (YAY).

Also, if an A-net dev is reading this, PLEASE introduce something similar to the party bomb Extra credit makes reference to! Love this idea

I think this is probably pretty accurate, although in the original test with the four categories, I’m fairly sure I’d be 100% Explorer Probably would be a bit of an over-simplification though.

I’d say they are both in the ballpark at least. I think it would be interesting for people to post their myer-briggs type too (if you know it) and/or favored class; INTP and ranger here.

Achiever-Mastermind.

Achiever: 16 – Yup
Mastermind: 15 – I love MYST games
Socialiser: 14 – At the very least, I can’t avoid instigating map chat :P
Seeker: 14 – Again, I love MYST games
Daredevil: 10 – I am a bit of a rambo
Conqueror: 5 – Yeah I’m not that competitive
Survivor: 0 – They got this one wrong. I’m fine with fear, I just don’t like being disturbed. I still survived and enjoyed playing Amnesia though.
