Bring Guild Wars 2 to Steam please!!!
Why in the world would you buy it again on steam if you already own it?
If you want the steam overlay, you can just add it as a non-steam game. Thats what I did. And as I’ve seen in other threads, steam apparently would possibly take a cut of the sales/gemsales, which Anet doesn’t need.
Please give us a keyring…

Neverwinter is on Steam .. and the currency in this game are Zen ( same function as GW2 Gems ) i’m almost sure Steam don’t get a cut on every Zen sale …
I don’t see what could prevent GW2 to be on Steam … You can buy Gw1 on Steam right now if you want.

Why would they put GW2 on Steam and force themselves to give money to Valve? There is literally no benefit for anyone except Valve.
A heretic’s voice in your head
A stargazer, releaser
As one who has never used Steam, could someone tell me what would be the advantage to ANet, to put the game on Steam?
I can see the ANet paying Steam as a disadvantage, but what would be the incentive for them to do so?

The theory is increased exposure due to steam showing it to people on the store page, or through recommendations.
I never understood the love affair with steam. Having something that runs in the background eating resources no matter how small will always be a bad thing to me.

Ahh, got ya, so it is just a pay for advertising thing. Does Steam decrease the FPS or ping in anyway? If that would be the case then that would be unwanted advertising to a game of GW2’s caliber.

For me its mostly the sales and the fact that its my primary communication program at this point. I like how I can see and respond to messages while playing a game without any extra steps, as well as access guides the community puts up on steam.
The resources it uses are pretty much a non-issue.

You realize you can do all of the things except for game sales in your first paragraph without steam right?
I don’t think people here realize that Valve demand a cut of anything sold via Steam. At the very minimum they’re going to want to be able to sell Gems (and have sales on them, quite likely).
Actually… that’d be a lot more convenient than the in-game Gem buying thing which is a pain, so… sign me up!

With extra steps, though. That’s what he’s saying – it’s easier with Steam because everyone is in one place.
For me, since I like to pay cash for things, buying a Steam card makes things a bit easier to pay for things, especially since Gem cards seem to be hard to come by in my area.
I completely understand Anets’ non-association with Steam though.

This, in addition to work Arenanet will need to put in to ensure that their game plays nice with the overlay makes this a pointless venture.

Yeah, but why would I?
Everything I need is together in one spot with one program. And its free. I’m not even paying for the convenience it gives me, just the games themselves.

GW 2 already works perfectly well with the steam overlay. I use it often when I want to take and share screenshots with others.

Indeed it does, but updates on either end may require tweaking or overhauls in the future. Just because it works now doesn’t mean it always will, and that will have to be addressed if Anet decides to offer it through Steam.

I like the library in steam and I would love to see GW2 get more exposure. As some pointed out there are some problems:
positive:
- more exposure and advertisement
- steam communities and friends might be incentivised to start playing
negativ:
- valve gets a cut (off of literally every sale done via steam. yes, every single gem sale too)
- legal requirements since valve has some rules that need to be followed by developers
Simply put, it’s the decision between more exposure in the short run versus a cut in revenues in the medium and long run.
I never understood the love affair with steam. Having something that runs in the background eating resources no matter how small will always be a bad thing to me.
Are you playing on a toaster? Steam consuming resources? Geez, I hate to think what kind of computer you have for Steam to be burden on your system.
I feel bad for people who don’t know what Steam is. I have almost 300 games that I’ve never paid more than 5-10$ for and they’re all triple AAA games.
I can understand people not wanting GW2 on Steam. I have no idea why you’re bashing the single greatest factor to PC gaming success (steam) ever. Without Steam PC gaming wouldn’t be dominating the gaming market like it currently is.
And oh yeah, Steam works well with GW2 already. Just add Gw2 to your Steam library.

I own GW1 Via Steam …
For the Updates/Patch to the game .. Steam don’t handle them the game itself will update…… additionally if you have purchased GW1 in Steam .. you can directly click on gw.exe in the steam game directory and the game will start even without Steam running ( as long as you have a valid A.net account it will work ). If you ask Steam to check the files integrity it will only check the base game files .. any patch , update or additional content will have to be downloaded normally by the client or a forced -image command line … Valve have no control ..
They sell you a Serial Code that’s all , And this serial code allow you to create a Gw1 account that can be used on any computer with the GW client ( Steam or Not )
Neverwinter is on Steam .. and the currency in this game are Zen ( same function as GW2 Gems ) i’m almost sure Steam don’t get a cut on every Zen sale …
Actually, they do. Valve gets a cut of every sale through the Steam store, that’s their whole business model (well, and supposedly making games, but they’re too busy rolling around in money to actually make Half Life 3). If you buy Zen with money in your Steam wallet, Valve gets a cut, if you don’t want Valve to get a cut then you buy Zen through ARC instead.
Seriously, Valve isn’t putting F2P MMOs on Steam out of good will, they’re doing it to make money and work out deals to stick their fingers into whatever revenue stream said MMO has. For Neverwinter that’s Zen sales.
I don’t see what could prevent GW2 to be on Steam … You can buy Gw1 on Steam right now if you want.
You can buy GW1 on Steam now because it’s a 10 year old sunsetted MMO that NCSoft doesn’t expect to see much money from anymore.
You can’t buy GW2 on Steam because it’s a 2 year old active MMO that still expected to generate lots of money that they don’t want to share with other publishers.
It really is all about the Benjamins.
Steam takes 30% cut. Way too much to be worth it for Anet.
Yeah, I don’t see the point in bringing the game to Steam. The game itself is already pretty popular, I doubt taking a cut in profits would provide enough rise in the playerbase to make up for it.
Disadvantage to Anet = Cost and slightly reduced earnings from gem sales.
Advantage to Anet = Greatly increased exposure. Some customers that will be slightly more satisfied.
Disadvantage to players = None, that I can think of (while some feel it has the potential to create lag, I am on a very low broadband speed, and have steam running all the time in the background, and I do not notice any issues. It doesn’t effect any of the other online games I play via Steam).
Advantage to players = Steam achievements and associated points/badges and benefits. Steam friends list and community integration. The potential for more players in the game.
At the end of the day, it’s up to Anet to decide whether the benefit outweighs the cost. I am sure that if they felt it was worth it they would look into putting GW2 on Steam. Maybe it is something they will do at a later stage.

Overwolf. Free, and you get asked to install along with teamspeak(the de facto voice program of gw2). Not only can you still use steam messaging with out, but it out performs steam in every way. Better browser, gw2 apps (like boss timers), and you can use everything without having to leave game (steam makes you essentially go to the steam ui desktop). One app, fewer steps to do everything.
I used to run gw2 from my stream library, but since I downloaded overwolf, I’m done with the garbage steam “overlay”.

Look dude. I’m 40. I’ll tell you right now that without STEAM pc gaming would not be even half of what it is today.
I’ve watched Steam for the last 10 years transform pc gaming almost single handedly to the point that other corps like EA and Microsoft have to now finally acknowledge the pc market………………none of that would have happened without STEAM/VALVE.
6 years ago people were saying PC gaming was dead. Good games and STEAM made that complete 180 turn around happen.

Well it probably is, but more to do with it being the first to take the centralization pioneered by applications like XFire and both take it to the next level and make it popular with the masses. Doesn’t mean the tool itself is wonderful or perfect, but the concept is, a singular application to allow purchase, review, keeping track of and launching games, and chatting with friends far exceeds any other gaming convenience and security ideas to date.
There is absolutely zero chance of GW2 ever being on steam since that owuld be NCSoft’s call and I know enough about their deal making to know one will never get done with Valve.
That said, I have been running GW2 as a non steam game for the chat overlay and to allow friends to see when I am playing it for a long time, and it works just fine for those needs.

Wow dude look I’m 38 and have been PC gaming since I was 10. You can have your opinion and I can have mine. Just because people where saying PC gaming was dead 6 years ago (I never heard that) doesn’t make it true.
Well Guild Wars 1 is on steam so it is a possibility.

There’s no reason for them to bring GW2 to steam, most developers use steam to quickly get access to an established customer base, that’s why a lot of indie developers are using it now. GW2 already had an established GW1 base to pull from, plus all the game of the year advertising they have by now. Sure they could probably pull in some more customers from stream but is it worth the cost at this point? Anet already sells the game for $10 specials on their own.

I thought the de facto voice program for GW2 was Mumble, most people I know do. And yes TC does, but they are pretty revolutionary in most of their ventures.

Steam is like big brother. Everything in one place. Everything tracked. Everything regulated and they get a cut of everything.
It is true they’ve made more game sales, but at the expense of game companies. People still say computer gaming is dead, and steam shows that’s it not, but it’s never been dead. Computer gaming is still steadily on the decline even with steam. It’s irrelevant what people say.
You can think steam is the best thing to happen to PC gaming because it’s popular, just like you can think that WOW is the best thing to happen to MMOs because it’s popular.
I think steam has changed the direction of PC gaming and I’m not sure it’s for the better.

I am surprised by this genuinely. Never than in this year and the year before have I had people in my environment and in the communities I follow online turn to heavily into building their own gaming PC’s for the first time and gaming on PCs…
Not saying it is wrong, but it goes completely against everything I have experienced personally which is mind blowing.
Steam is the largest gaming network that exists with over 100 million account worldwide the only 2 companies that officialy refuse to bring their games on Steam are Blizzard which has Battlenet and EA which has Origin and they both get a lot of hate because noone is using their launchers especialy EA is the most hated company that exists but now apart from that Guild Wars 1 and all of its expansions are on Steam why cant you justb ring Guild Wars 2 there too? me and many others want to have this game in the library there to save our played time and the other features. Elder Scrolls Online came to Steam aswell, hell even League of Legends was on Steam for 1-2 days it got removed after (no joke).
I really hope in the future Guild Wars 2 will come to Steam too it will just give ArenaNet a huge amount of money if they bring it because not only thousands of new people will buy it but a lot of the old ones including me will buy it again from there.
I don’t think NCSoft would allow something like this. They want Guild Wars 2 to fund their lineage and Aion.. lol…
Please no… I have had nothing but problems with Steam..
in EU almost everyone uses TS over mumble
I have never been asked to join a mumble server ever in GW2, TS is very common though

Have you noticed how so many “PC” games now come out optimized for controllers instead of keyboards.
I know before Skyrim launched they expected to get most of their sales, the vast majority, from console sales.
I know that at least one game has gotten in trouble by limiting the graphic expansion on the PC, to keep in in line with console versions.
Consoles are generally cheaper than PCs, but more importantly they’re mindless. You don’t have to decide what video card you want. And most people are mentally lazy.
Consoles have taken a lot of gamers away from PCs.
Edit: I should mention steadily on the decline doesn’t mean a steep decline. PC gaming has gradually been losing people for a long long time. The only thing that’s boyed it up is Facebook games, which a lot of people play, but it’s hard to think of that as computer games.
The biggest growing industry is actually cell phone games now. That bubble has to burst at some point soon too.

Building your own PC has gotten a lot cheaper in the past couple of years and doesn’t take a whole lot of know how. I’ve converted a lot of console people to PC for this very reason. Instead of buying a new console every 4-5 years you can build a PC and upgrade it as needed. Oh yeah and 30-40 fps on a console compared to 80 on a desktop makes a huge difference. 90% of the people I have converted have straight up dropped consoles.
Cell phone games reach a broader market, are mobile and take far less development time so I don’t see that bubble bursting any time soon.

Controllers for PCs automatically means dumbing down of games. It’s much harder to play something like Guild Wars 2 on a controller, because we have more commands than can comfortably fit on a controller, which means that new games optimized for consoles lowers the quality of PC games.
More to the point, there was more to the article than just stuff being used on controllers. There’s companies telling us more of their game sales are on consoles and that they only expect that to increase.
It actually goes in cycles. As the end of a console hardware cycle gets close, some people will start moving toward computers short term, because those people will be playing much better games…until the new consoles come out and gradually it shifts back.
But I can’t tell you how many times I’ve talked to people about Guild Wars 2 and they ask if it’s out on console.
It’s all very nice to say who cares about people who won’t play computer games. We’ll all care when less and less people start making them or optimizing them for computers, which is already happening.
