HoT is more than a month away, and masteries (to my understanding) will only be available to people who have purchased HoT.

Just as other MMOs have an extra 10 levels if you buy the expansion, this game has progression for level 80s who buy the expansion. Neither type of MMO allows the non expansion buyer to progress their character.
ANet may give it to you.

But the main game is free now and HoT might be awesome.

Yes, but I realized too late the thousands of exp I was earning doing world completion was going to complete and total waste, and I’m a customer who purchased HoT>
I picked it as something to work on while waiting for HoT, now I feel ripped off for doing it early, everything I do feeling like I’m wasting effort. And all it would take would be to get something, a spirit shard even, for my efforts.
There is absolutely no evidence to support that it would.” -AnthonyOrdon

I have 8 chars with full map completion that will never have that if it does count. I’ll have the Rev and a char that has 70% done that was started after I bought the expansion. /shrug. That’s the way it goes.

Even with the masteries the level 80 Spirit Shard should go back in place. Why, simple:
- It grants some feeling that hitting 80 has value, based on betas you will gain mastery XP as you go not just on hitting 80 over and over again.
- It creates a good source of resources for people if they use shards versus just hording them. Shards are dropping but based on RNG they are not keeping pace for some people if their luck is not good.
- It gives meanings to the +XP food and boosters that people have stopped using now once they hit 80 since it means nothing.
- It was fun, hitting cap didn’t feel that way since there was something to collect from it. Will masteries fill this spot, no. They will be different and potentially fun on their own but still not fill that gap.
So OP, +1 from me and add another +100 from all the others in game that this has been discussed with.

I agree that ANet should have left something in place for gaining experience during the period between introducing specializations/hero points and the release of HoT.
However, I think the HoT system will be fine for people feeling that it’s worth gaining experience after L80, since it does help progress masteries and spirit shards will accumulate for everyone except those that spend them like they are unlimited (which was sort of true prior to Hero Points).

+1 to the OP and +1 to you. I think 1 spirit shard is a fitting reward.
I think some of you either didn’t read the article that was linked or missed a very important part of it.
I quote, “Some Mastery points will come from content that existing players may have already completed, and these Mastery points will be automatically awarded to you with the release of Heart of Thorns, allowing you to get started on your Mastery journey right away.”

You feeling ripped off is your own doing. They clearly said that experience past level 80 won’t give you anything at the specialisation update a couple months back, but it will give you something then the xpac will come online.
Anet did their job, you just had to read the official news.

Not sure what point you are trying to make since mastery points and mastery exp are not the same.
They need to add some sort of animation for getting level 80. Like a celebration finisher where you chracter goes into a short dance animation and confetti pops out of you with like streamers and a firework..
GZ on 80 Bro!

There is the leveling knockback, where leveling knocks back any nearby enemies by several feet. (Especially amusing when melee chars level or when in a big farming group and someone levels and all the mobs you were AoEing get knocked away).
