Bug or Feature? (transmutation/dye)
If it says 0 as the number of charges, the change is free. It will pop up with the transmutation notification even if your recoloring something, so don’t worry.
You can get charges via map completion, daily rewards and other places as well as the gem store.
I searched but I can’t find this exact issue.
When I go into my hero panel and try to recolor something it says I need transmutation charges which I don’t have any. Am I supposed to purchase them in the gem store? That seems a bit bonkers.
I’ve been away for a bit and trying to wrap my head around the expansions/changes.Thank you.
If all you’re doing is changing your dye job, it should read that it’ll cost you no charges at all. As to why it even bothers to tell you that, it’s because the system allows you to alter the skins of your weapons and armour, and then let you to move on to the dye stage before then whacking the Apply button to commit both changes in one go.

Just don’t get used to it. I find it highly suspicious that the transmutation transaction is conveniently programmed into the dye coloring system. I’m betting it won’t be completely free for long.

I don’t think it’s suspicious at all.
You can freely switch from the wardrobe tab to the dying tab before applying any of the wardrobe changes. It’s just there for bookkeeping so you can so you can fine tune your whole wardrobe/dye look before accepting any of the transmutation charge costs as you switch back and forth between the two tabs.

Lol. That thread is over a month old. It has a disclaimer as the first sentence. Mike O’Brien gave an interview that cleared up the rumors that were floating around because of what was posted on the China forums (that prompted all the threads on various Western forums).
Are dyes always free? Or just the first time? I just started playing, and the Free armour I got with the digital download looks horrendous in the color I chose at character creation time. I want to sort of “plug and play” but I’m afraid I’ll be stuck having to pay for more dye changes later. I am a new player and it isn’t obvious if dyes are always free or not.
Necroing threads is not always the best idea…just an FYI.
Any Dye you unlock is free to use as many times and on as many items you want…forever.
To acquire new Dyes, you must purchase them with Gems, acquire them with Laurels, or receive them in Black Lion Trading Company Chests, or crafting them using the Chef discipline.
You can also put duplicate dyes in the Mystic Forge for a chance at a different dye. You have a small chance at a higher rarity dye by using the Mystic Forge.
Welcome to Tyria, and good luck.
