I had a feeling the jungle explorer was going to be temporary. I’d strongly recommend it, you can do so much with it just a simple color change can radically alter the feel and function of the outfit. With enameled generation or maybe sand dye it can be a desert themed outfit while shadow blue (actually distinct from shadow abyss on it too! I personally tested it ^_^ ) can have yet another theme.

That’s a lot of finishers going. Wonder if the experiment never paid off for them.

Too many of the finishers have all the decent animation after the stomp instead of as the stomp. meh.
Much prefer seeing stuff like the scarecrow one, where the scarecrow is the stomp, like the default. For the rest by the time the animation plays I’m long gone.

After I got the Wurm finisher when it came out I’ve yet to find another one I’d want to buy and use instead.

Good point. It is interesting that it was just on sale (1/2 price which is when I bought it) along with the Shadow Assassin one.

I wonder what threshold in sales they use to decide it’s time to pull items from the shop so demand builds up again.

I would give anything for the SAB Finisher to make a come back.

It would be nice to see finishers related to what side we chose in the PS like an Order of Whispers one for example.

I picked up shadow assassin. Not my ideal choice but I am leveling a thief and do not want to have to change dyes every few levels when I get something new. I might do the same with jungle explorer for the expansion.

Yeah, wish you could change the colour of the hardware on it (buckles etc.), as well, so it goes with gold weapons.

What I do like about it, is that it is one of the few (or perhaps the only?) outfits/skins that has a kind of baggy top half, as opposed to being figure-hugging and/or or a long coat.

Would be nice it they did some more armour/outfits with that kind of silhouette, but without all the packs and so on.

Because removing it and then bringing it for a limited time spikes sales. If forces players to buy on ANet’s schedule. I catches players with not enough gold to convert to gems to buy item X which forces them to buy gems with cash, which pays the bills.

The game may not have a subscription but a predictable monthly cashflow is still desirable.

No, they said “style items”. While old armor sets can return I’m expecting more outfits and singular armor pieces since the shift from the gem store only said no new armor sets.

Also weapon skins are “style items”.

They didn’t even offer a sale for them. That’s shady and low of them. So much for steering away from temporary things.

Of course not. It’s all about getting players to BUY GEMS WITH CASH because that’s how ANet gets income other than account/expansion purchases. Now players have to decide, in less than a week, if it’s worth real money to get the skins or finishers they want before they are gone.

If these were selling well or frequently, they would hang around but I would wager their sales are less than stellar over the last 90 days so bye for now.

Also if HoT does bring in a lot of new players, reintroducing them will look like brand new items for that crowd.

That sounds like there will be some other way to get them, maybe? Some “indirect” way? Some way that doesn’t cost RL cash? Oh well, not that I use finishers much but there were some I’d regret not having for Toxics, Function Drones, or Daredevil Elites (assuming the latter two will use finishers) so I grabbed 4 of them just in case.

I can see them putting all those finishers into RNG loot tables inside Black Lions chests. That’s why they supposedly upped the key drop rate.

I could see them releasing the finishers in a similar way to the holiday ones: Release them in reward bundles that give 3-5 uses. Maybe somewhere in the PvP track rewards, since that makes the most sense.

Its a perfect example of psychological response. A lot of people are now going to buy them before they’re gone because they know the items wont be available for a while.
Even knowing the stuff is likely to come back there’s a sense of urgency, something companies have been taking advantage of for ages.
Limited time sale! (every few months)
I’ve seen stores in vacation areas that spend the entire summer with banners proclaiming it’s their last week in business and they’re clearing stock, or its a one week special, blah blah blah.
Because it suckers some people, and it pushes others who are on the fence or who want it but haven’t bothered to purchase “because I can buy it any time” to pick it up.

Funny thing, I actually pay. Like, not converting gold to gems, real life dollars. I support what I like, and I do so without begrudging the company for making it.

That doesn’t make the abuse of psychology to wrench a few more monies out of people to be a less-than-ethical practice.

I’d say the gold-to-gem conversion is part of the reason for these manipulative ‘sales’. If they left the items on indefinitely, gold farmers would just run dungeons or play the trading post until they could buy them, for free, while providing a minuscule bump in gem value. ANet loses $10, and a potential gold buyer gets the short shrift (twice-over for rounding error truncation!).

With digital product, the sky’s the limit on ways to offer more value for actually paying up. 800 gems gets a paltry amount of gold or an easy way to afford the next nifty outfit, but the pot could be sweeter, at no additional cost to the developer. Bundle deals can entice purchases just as easily as “buy now” schemes. Simple example: buy gems and get a free Black Lion Chest Key. Or 6 transmuation charges. Or whatever. Rotate the rewards and see what sells the most extra gems.

But instead, we get tsk-worthy things like “going away forever” sales, “one day” sales, and deliberately pricing things so that we have extra gems left over (outfits) or it requires buying 1600 gems instead of 800 (harvesting tools). Tactics like those, while effective, don’t harbor good will from the buyer, and the buyer knows it, even if he falls for it.

You were saying that techniques that are proven to drive cash sales are unethical.

And you are against the gold->gem exchange. That funds the gem->gold side of the exchange as well as being a double gold sink, as well as attempting to give an outlet to those who would end up at a RMT.

So how else do you increase sales on an ever aging series of items? And it’s not about value to the players but as a means to provide a more steady income to ANet.

I’d recommend Skritt. It is my finisher of choice and it is magnificent.

Always wanted Ascalonian Leader but the animation is about 2 seconds too short or something and leaves me ultimately underwhelmed.

Thanks for the notice! Luckily I already have the armour sets and outfit that I like, the firey stuff doesn’t interest me. I do like some of the finishers, but find the price of 800 gems a bit too steep.

I think that from the business side of it, it’s a bit odd. From a sales perspective on one hand creating urgency is good, but I know from experience that having good availability of products is just as valuable in returns, often even more so.

Since urgency does nothing to me, and I bet I’m not the only customer who’s like that. I’ve liked to get the Roxx quiver since forever but it’s never available when I have gems to spare. If it was, I would’ve bought it ages ago. I don’t mind purchasing a gem card now and then, but I prefer to spend them when I want to, so I’m not likely to buy gems in a hurry for one item. I’d probably buy gems a bit more often if the whole selection was available all the time.

Yeah, i wanted the Shadow Assassin outfit but I only buy outfits when they’re on sale because screw paying $10 for things like that. Doesn’t look that great on an Asura thief anyway, looks better on my human warrior tbh.

Anyhoo, I’ll get the $100 HoT pack and just save my gems fore when things go on sale and grab them then. I already have a full set of mech harvest tools so I don’t need those. Finishers do nothing for me since they can’t be used in PVE, etc.

I like either explosive finishers with a lot of light or holiday finishers. I am kind of a mean troll in wvw or spvp i guess haha those holiday finishers might make someone mad xD but yea i love holiday finishers and explosions or lights in the finishers.

I’m old school, super adventure box nuke finisher for the win! Gotta love seeing a line of huge pixelated mushroom clouds in the middle of a wvw zerg vs zerg fight. Plus it makes you feel good to drop a nuke on their heads.
