Buying Gems from the Store
I agree, it does seem odd to have increments at all when theres no discount for bulk buys like in other mmos. Id happily second the suggestion of more for less!

Yeah it’s strange. If they really didn’t want to give us a discount for buying more. They should at least let us type in the quantity that we wish to buy instead of being stuck with 800, 1600 etc

Would be nice to type in a quantity…I have 55 gems left after I got what I wanted for wintersday!

It’s a common tactic for making people spend more. You sell store currency in increments of say 200, 400, 600 etc. and then price items at 450 or 700 or whatever. People have to buy slightly more than they want to use, and then either use up the extras on stuff they might not have otherwise bought, or the next time they’re tempted they tell themselves “Well, I still have some gems left over, so that saves a bit of money, I might as well get it”.

coming from a company that wants to make ‘a game for gamers, by gamers’. . .you would think they would opt out of using cheap ‘tactics’ like that

Regardless of anything they or anybody else says, a company is a company and a company solely exists to make money. If they can make more money by doing something, you’re darn right they’ll do it. This is not a bad thing, nor is it a new thing, every successful company does this.

so they’re ‘innovative’ and ‘cutting edge’ when they get rid of the trinity everyone uses, or gets rid of ‘vertical progression’ that companies use to keep people grinding, or even when they get rid of the standard fetch quests.
BUT, when it comes to this. they have to be just like ‘every successful company’ right?
sounds very very one sided, and saying that only labels you as a fanboy. im all for guild wars 2 and hope it does well. but im not vapid enough just sit by and not question things when i think or feel they’re out of place
just seems funny that they can be ‘good guy anet’ on this and that topic. but when it comes to using a lame marketing tactic to make you spend more money than you want, then it’s ok and they can still be ‘good guy anet’

The difference is that being “innovative” and “cutting edge” in gameplay also is leading to business success.
Innovative and cutting edge gameplay → good business
Standard market practices → good business.
I see no problem here…

You’re making it seem like they’re forcing you to buy gems or something.

i just think it’s a cheap tactic is all. nothing more, nothing less.
