Buying Gold
A recent thread came up about buying gold, then was closed because OP question was answered. Here’s another one.
So If I buy gold with real cash from someone in game, are you going to subpoena the credit card charges to find out? What if he just wanted to give me money? I say this because in a cash transaction, you guys can’t do anything (I hand someone cash IRL they give me gold in game). I personally think you guys don’t want the gem market to be competitive with other companies (effectively lowering the cost of gems). But I am more and more inclined to whisper rich friends in game and paypal them money for some gold (not saying I would actually do it, but what is to stop me without repercussions)?
The short of it is, their game, their rules. They might not be able to prove you did, but you’d be hard-pressed to prove you didn’t. Even the 50-100g I would send my son if he starts playing, I might be inclined to let support know beforehand, with the account IP addresses (Both the same in this case), and involved account names, just to make sure the transaction doesn’t get flagged.
IF the gold is legally farmed on a legal acount and nobody knows if
you pay money for it, there is no problem.
However .. there are the ifs .. who knows IF your friend is not a goldseller, and or has
stolen the account .. and whatever else.
Best MMOs are the ones that never make it. Therefore Stargate Online wins.

The fact that they can investigate accounts pretty easily if there’s substantial amounts of gold being sent to/from unrelated accounts.

My response if I was the rich guy: “Yeah, seemed like a nice guy, gave him 10k gold. So what? I earned it. Stop harassing me.”
A semi-relevant observation/statement…
I work too much so I tend to buy gold in every game I play (sometimes from unofficial sources). However, I haven’t even looked at other options in GW2 since I can just buy gems. Every game should have a “legal” option to purchase currency for those of us who don’t have the time to farm.

yea but to give a new guy 10k gold s/he have to spend 20 weeks getting said gold from your mails.
If you have 10k gold put it into a guild bank give that guild to a friend then leave and not return I dont think they would have a problem with it.
If said friend give you cash irl who is to know that you and that friend neither of you would tell anet about it so no chance of getting banned.
If you dont know said guy irl as other have stated how do you know this guy havent had 10-20 accounts and sent out alot of gold through those before?
All digital property existing in the game is solely owned by ArenaNet and therefore they are legally the only entity in a trade which can profit by the exchange of goods.
Is there a way for them to know? Unlikely. But that doesn’t mean they can’t or won’t suspend accounts just on suspicion alone. Accounts can be closed with or without reason or definitive proof. All a support worker needs is the inclination RMT happened, and boom, the accounts are gone with no way to get them back.
Legally, the only acceptable behavior is for both to be exchanged as gifts. As soon as this hits regularity, though, expect a suspension by being able to be classified as someone profiting or potentially profiting by ANet’s property.
