While I could write an essay regarding this topic, someone on Reddit appears to have done so for me, so instead I will post the link here to share to you all. To any Anet Devs and/or moderators reading this, I cannot suggest this enough. This has been a concern of mine since beta, but I’ve never really been able to put the words to it.

tl;dr The camera doesn’t change with character height, causing much of our view to be obstructed. If the camera had a set height or changed height based on the height of the character, instead of the height of the race, gameplay and general view of the world would be greatly improved.

I’ll give you an upvote on this because it’s definitely one of the issues with the camera and that person on reddit did a great job of breaking the issue down.

Also, why in the world does the camera spin 180 degrees or even a full circle when I am revived, rally, or revive someone else sometimes!?! This is so frustrating and I can’t count the number of times this ‘camera spin’ glitch/whatever has caused me to turn in a circle and run/dodge directly into a huge aoe/boss attack. It is incredibly frustrating as generally things are a kittenaotic as it is when you’re trying to rally/revive in the middle of a fight.

I don’t have that issue :S. Maybe try changing the rotation sensitivity in the games settings? I wonder if it’s reverting to the camera view from before you died – and that you’re spun the camera around a couple of times while dead?

(I do remember having this issue in GW1 though, the camera doing a full 360 degree rotation every time I was resurrected at a shrine – so I understand exactly how frustrating it is)

If I’m being revived I make sure to point my camera where I want to go and push both my mouse buttons the moment I’m up (or else have the best dodge direction ready to hit). You will always move the way your camera is facing when you do that.

At the very least, I’d like my camera to go back where I had it when I’m revived, instead of always having to adjust from a top-down view.

Good post! Thanks for articulating this issue so well.

It’s blown my mind since i’ve starting playing that there is a horizontal slider and not a vertical slider. Who even uses a horizontal slider? People who wear an eyepatch? Would that even help? I dont think it would help.

I get this when running around trading, banking, etc.

It’s because the direction in which your character (as opposed to the camera) is “pointed” (or was pointed, as far as the game is concerned) takes precedence to where your camera is facing.

Ask any Ride The Lightning or Burning Speed user how AWESOME it is to have to slightly tap the intended direction in order to preclude plummeting to certain death EVEN THOUGH your camera is pointed where you really wanna go.

Woo! I was the person that made that, with the goal to create a secret society of really tiny characters of wildly obsessive types.

But good news! A dev going by “ArenaNetEvanL”, which I can only hope is the Anet programmer Evan Lesh here, responded on reddit and said:

“This is a great observation. I’m not sure whether the idea of camera pivot point based on height has been brought up before, but there isn’t much stopping us from trying out moving the pivot point around. I’d have to look into the code if there are technical limitations.”

So yeah, you can imagine how much excited drool sneaked it’s way out of my mouth while I was smiling reading that. <3

It has nothing to do with me moving or facing a different direction or moving the camera. I’ve played since launch and it’s not such a silly oversight. What I DO think it has something to do with is the camera trying to automatically re-orientate itself toward the selected target. So if a huge attack is coming from right behind you as you rally etc. and you quickly try to evade/move in the opposite direction out of harms way, then the rapid camera spin will ‘reverse’ the direction of your movement causing you to roll right into the attack for, possibly, another instant down. It can be rather frustrating in tight areas such as CM.

I’ve always found that the camera angle faces the ground too much. I feel like im always looking at the ground and not ahead of me towards the horizon.

Based on that reddit post I really hope that one day we could get an option to move the pivot point ourselves. That would be lovely!

Huh… then why’s it do it in rata sum near accountancy wp when banking sometimes?

IDK dang it! That’s why I’m saying Ir’s frustrating and am just trying to throw some ideas out there regarding the cause. I am certain it has nothing to do with the user though. Read my other posts on this thread before you ask silly questions.

You can often see this if you do a ranged attack without a selected target. The shot will go in whatever direction your character is facing, unless some potential target happens to be within the unspecified auto-targeting parameters (best i can tell, undisturbed LOS, within 1200 range, and as close to the center of screen as possible).

I really “love” how Jon Peters showed up on Reddit once and claimed that providing us with a toggled camera control would make the game too action oriented. Right now the game is a mishmash of action and classic MMORPG UX elements, and it is making for a poorer experience overall.

It would not surprise me if JP was behind the artistic decision that gave us the current camera code as well.

Camera angles have been a big issue for me a number of times. It always finds a reason to weird every time I require quick ground targeting at a distance causing me to miss a number of times. My biggest complain tho is when I’m forced to fight near a wall or object and my view goes from a distance to being inches from my head or kitten completely blinding me. which usual results in me running around like a headless chicken till I can see again.
