Q:
Campaigns
A:
They don’t plan on using the GW1 style standalone expansion model. With the comment on level cap increases, a traditional expansion style where the max level content is increased is highly probable.
The original interview about no standalone expansions can be found here. Note that they misunderstood what having no plans for standalone expansions meant, so the later half of the article is incorrect (they assumed it meant no expansions at all).
There is a news announcement somewhere where they addressed that a little. don’t remember where, though. I do recall them saying it’s not going to be the same, though. If i can find it, I’ll link it. Or, someone else will, I’m sure
Hey Guys,
I’m worried that GW2 will use the same campaign style system for expacs as GW1. I hated that and prefer a more seamless world instead of loading up what essentially felt like, to me, a new game each expansion. I’m curious if anyone knows of any FAQs or interviews where the Devs have talked about this aspect of the game and how they are going to handle it.
Cheers in advance.
I don’t think we have heard anything about expansions and how they will be made so far. Even though I wouldn’t mind a campaign system like original Guild Wars, it would keep the game unique, but then it isn’t always about being unique, it’s about keeping players interested.
But to be honest, campaigns (in my opinion) were expansions, but perhaps not expansions like World of Warcraft ones, where it’s expansions only were for the highest of levels players, where Guild Wars you could create a new character on said new content and level it only there if you liked to, and it also had high level content.
But I don’t mind either way. The only things I wish for though is that expansions shouldn’t be highest level required, I think you should be able to go and play the new expansion with your friend, even if he’s still at level 50.
I also wish for no level increase, I wish we could stay at level 80, and still keep the content interesting.
Perhaps expansions to Guild Wars 2 should take your characters back to level 1 in the new content. You will still have your level 80 gear from Tyria, and you will be level 80 in Tyria, but when you go to, for example, Elona (if such expansion will come) your character will be level 1, but still have your level 80 armour and weapons.
Your character’s ‘’true level’’ will be level 80, but you will be down leveld in the new content to level 1, and can level up all the way to 80, to reach the highest level in the new content.
I just hope they really focus on making things feel more seamless I didn’t like the idea of transferring a character between games. It makes me feel as if the community was strewn across a bunch of different instanced quest lines. I don’t mind how the expansions work, raising levels caps are not important to me GW1 proved that raising the cap wasn’t a necessary thing. I just hope I can feel like I’m playing a single game not 4 linked campaign games. If that makes any sense.

Thanks for the heads up, this calms me somewhat and does make sense given they have confirmed level cap increases pretty much. It will be interesting to watch however, if they do introduce campaigns, what they do to make it fit better in Tyria.
