Dunno. Maybe not every gamer in China is after super grindy games and would like this one. Who knows? Be interesting to see how it all pans out.

What? Everything is mindless, repetitive grind in this game. I’m about to log in to do another scheduled (for real, there is a schedule!) chore of nerfed and less (since some bosses we did earlier isn’t worthy to keep track of, according to ANET) Bosses, followed by the daily PvP I can muster. Which involves running to the same spot over and over and die, cause those servers are the most populated ones outside of tournaments.
Depending on how bored I am, I then either do yet another grindy, rewardless Fractal, a bit of WvW to finish another schedule called achievements, which I still have some loose ends on. Or simply log off.
Strangly enough, I find it all more addictive than in other similar games. I’m sure the same goes for most asians.
On one hand I see players constantly refer to Asian MMOs as nothing but mindless grinds but Asian MMOs are successful in Asia.
Some players think GW2 is a mindless grind (I’m not one) so by that logic shouldn’t Asia also they love this game?

I don’t find the game to be a grind, but it’s all perspective. What I enjoy doing, vs what someone else enjoys doing is not necessarily the same. What I like, they may see as grind. What they like, I may see as grind. shrug

Ah. I was hoping to see more along the lines of if they kept the exp amounts the same between levels, had the same availability of drops and coin payouts for dungeons/pvp/activities/etc, if crafting took the same amounts of materials or introduced a failure chance, stuff like that.
I’d be surprised if none of those things has changed.

B2P is new in the China mmorpg market so it may work being that the only one as such though i guess its completing with F2P to a point. I think a lot of ppl will buy it and play it and do the same thing NA EU side put it down for a bit then pick it back up over and over. GW2 has become a good “put down when you want but always able to come back when you want.”

I think there are three glaring difference between GW2 and the popular Asian MMO’s.
1. The grind. I have to laugh when I hear people complain about the grind in GW2. You’ve never experienced a grind until you’ve played an Asian MMO. For example, I played one game from 2004-2006. The level cap was 75. It took me two years of nightly playing to reach the level cap. I rolled no alts.
2. The guilds. Western MMO’s tend to treat guilds as large, faceless zergs. You can have hundreds of members in your guilds. Meanwhile, Asian MMO’s tend to restrict guild membership to a few dozen members. I like this a lot, as you really get to know your guild members. Also, in Asian MMO’s it is easily apparent who the good guilds are . . as opposed to guilds made by some kid on a whim.
3. Penalties. I think the biggest difference I have seen is that Western MMO’s tend to have absolutely zero death penalties. Meanwhile, Asian MMO’s often have severe death penalties (causing a full day’s worth of experience at times). I think a lot of Eastern players may find GW2 far too carebear.
One things is for sure this game is spread thin and badly because of trying to keep everyone happy in sPvP, WvW, harcore pve grinders and farmers, casual pve story and quest lovers, social people and solo players that its obvious its flaw is trying far too much when its team is by far not big enough for substantial new content for every ones needs.
Hopefully the legendary and ascended grind will keep hardcores busy because the last thing I want is fresh but high difficulty content. I’m hoping for slightly challenging but still complex permanent dungeon content, with new ‘leveling zones’ and quests. Complex and challenging are not necessarily the same.
It may be a cliched compromise but sometimes the best way to please hardcore and casual are to introduce a tiered difficulty system. I wouldn’t make it tiered so dungeons are solo-able by any but the current most skilled who always find a way. Maybe just even keep dungeons as they are for a normal difficulty level and introduce a nightmare level for the hardcore and these could involve very difficult enemies, double armour damage, slow movement, even weapon damage and no repair until the quest is completed (from either inside or outside the dungeon).

I think the main problem will be that there is no purpose to the grind. In most MMO’s you grind so that you can take on more challenging content and see new stories. In GW2 you grind just for the sake of grinding and to look shinier (literally).

I think some of the state of success will depend on how ANet will react to a Chinese version of the snowflake incident and karma vendor incident, because there’s bound to be one somewhere.

I never understood the ‘huge guild’ mentality myself. I guess I’m definitely ‘more Asian’ in my guild preference as well, since I like to keep mine small. I like to know my members, and I like them to know me. It just adds something ‘more’ to the game, for me. Just the other night, my husband and I were helping on of our members with his math, he was studying for his final. You just don’t get that… connection.. in the larger guilds.
Chinese/Korean people are hardcore grinders, I don’t think gw2 will suit their needs.

GW2 is as grindy as you want it to be, thats the difference. You can grind as much as you want, but you don’t need to grind if you don’t want.
The big difference in Asian MMOs is mostly that you there HAVE TO grind just to level up, while in western the leveling got faster and faster with the years and the grind begins at max level.
Best MMOs are the ones that never make it. Therefore Stargate Online wins.

Grindy? I don’t think I have “grinded” once in over 3000 hours of game time. Oh all right, maybe level 70 through 80 felt a bit like a grind on my 4th or 5th alt.

You are most welcome. Luckily, memory hasn’t completely failed me…yet. Lol.
Do you think that the break-even point for Anet will be met fairly quickly with the number of sales? Then add in the micro transactions for bags, bank space, outfits, and harvesting tools, just to name a few. The amount of money generated in the first month of play by over 500k players should, imho, cover the cost of setting up shop over in China. Everything after that would basically be profit after operating costs are met.
So even if the market tanks after the first year in China they should have made a sizable amount of cash. Just my thoughts.

There is no need. This is a game, it is played for fun, no one needs to do anything.
In GW2 the average time to get a legendary weapon is ~800 hours for the first one and about 400-500 for each subsequent one (assuming no credit cards). Being the only real endgame in GW2 that is your only goal. In WoW the goal is to clear top tier raiding content. Raids typically are done in 3 hours sessions 2 nights a week. That is on average 6 hours a week of raiding. You wold need to raid for 133 weeks straight to equal the time to get a legendary weapon…
I don’t know how anyone can compare the grind in GW2 to that of WoW, GW2 blows it out of the water. I’ve never played an Eastern MMO, I hear they are grindier, so I can only assume they will like the grind in GW2 since it is much more tedious then anything WoW offers.
But as you pointed out there is no real point in having a legendary weapon. There is no story behind it, it doesn’t open up new content. There is nothing to do with the weapon once you have it. Since the game doesn’t release new content once you get a legendary you are pretty much done.
So in summary I think the game will do really well at launch since it offers long term grindy goals that the market there likes, however it will quickly plummet in players due to the lack of actual content grind to keep players around long term. I mean the game had a two year head start in NA/EU to build up content and there is a grand total of 0 new content for the chinese market because Anet removed it all from the game.
No mention of that Precursor box in those Reddit links. That’s strange.

I don’t think GW2 China will go well. GW2 may be more grindy but the point is that eastern MMOs focus on guild pvping, equipments upgrading and social things.
GW2 has poor focus on guild, it also does not have uber equipments. So, when the people finally “grind” their way up, they realise GW2 china has nothing much worth grinding for. =(
