Can I get black lion keys from mobs in gw2?
Yes, though I have been playing since beta’s and I’ve gotten 1 key.

The true answer is Yes.
The Realistic answer is No.
The drop rate for them is so low that getting yellows is common in comparison.
You can get them, I got my first after about 400 hours so it’s a good source of income in the game, no wait, I don’t think you can sell on the TP. Such a shame, If I played constantly for a year non-stop I could’ve made a pittance.
Anet keeps removing my ways to make cash
They appear to have a similar droprate to exotics in my experience; you can however get them from certain personal story missions (such as level 10 and level 30)
Give Charr armor some more love!
Let us show our spots, stripes, or lack-there-of in style.
IF they drop the chances have to be somthing like 0.00000000000000000000000000001 cause ive put in an ungodly amount of hours and not gotten one
I get like 2-3 every month, and I play as little as nine hours some weeks. Some people just have terrible luck.

You are either:
A) Running Magic Find Gear, which increases your odds at rolling on the key’s table
B) Buying the keys through in-game gold→gem conversion
C) Lying.

Im going with C lol
Yes they do indeed drop.
Between Halloween and Wintersday, I had 4-5 keys drop (one may have been from map completion). Last one was from a grub in Caledon Forest…. right after loading the game, I turned around and a guy was killing a grub, so I shot at it and ended up with a key. Another dropped off a risen spider. The rest is foggy. :p
Yes.
So far I’ve got about 5-6 keys. It’s not such a frustration. The frustration is in the content of the chest once you opened it. All they ever do is only to take more slots in your inventory.
Saw one drop tonight.
I had few of them drop from mobs. Currently, I have played for about 250hrs; got 57 chests and 13 keys.

I usually get about 2 a month, and I play pretty casually. Of course, it’s like a 1 key to 20 chests ratio.

Sounds about right. I’ve never seen either a key or an exotic in a loot drop, in a few hundred hours of playtime.
Of course, as you say, I have gotten keys from personal story steps. And every time I do, after throwing away another few tonics and sighing about the bank space I’m wasting on boosters I never use, I really don’t feel too bad about never having had a key as a random drop.
I used magic find gear for a good 3 months non stop and I think I had got one key total from drops. The rest were from the chests themselves, random map completes and as stated earlier the lvl 10 and 30 quests.
If you really want these keys I would advise doing what I do to farm them, my steps are as follow:
1 – Make a new char, personally I prefer Human, middle class. Any other options go with whatever.
2 – Start quests as soon as possible and just rush through them to the lvl 10 quest. Complete it for the key.
3 – Delete char and repeat. :P
Doing this I usually complete the 10th lvl quest at lvl 4 combat all within roughly 30-40 mins. So that works out at 1 key for every 30-40 mins you want to devote to doing so. MUCH better than trying to get as drops or spending a dime on gems.
Note: I have sent in a support ticket asking A-Net if this would be considered an exploit and recieved a reply saying no it is perfectly fine to do; so – have fun!

Almost 1200hrs here and have only gotten a single key, back in BWE1

Received as rewards, but never as a drop. At this point I really do not care if I open a chest or not, everything in it is useless anyways, just fluff items.
Effectively, no. In theory, yes.

Repair kits are VERY helpful for doing fractals and the salvage kits are VERY handy if you need ectos. So unless you don’t do crafting or fractals, for you this may be true.
