Can not use the same Ascended item twice.
Since they don’t refund player made errors, no. You’ll have to use it on an alt.
I feel bad for you. There is no way to refund that unfortunately.
They really should do something about it asap. I see thread like yours almost every week or so.
And to those who says “unique” as the warning text, clearly it isn’t clear enough for many players. Otherwise we won’t get threads like this so frequently.
It’s soulbound already.
I thought it would equip in the second slot..
I also thought that there would be some kind of warning telling you that you can’t use the same item twice? just a slight hint of some kind?
If it’s a ring you can use the infusion recipe on it (5 vials of mist essence, 3 globs of mist essence, and 1 shard of mist essence + the ring) and I believe that knocks it to account bound.
EDIT: There is a slight hint/warning. They are some of the only items in the game with the word “unique” written in the description. I know everyone doesn’t know what that means in game terms though, so I see where you’re coming from. Luckily I found out trying to equip two Karka Shell Earrings (from the Karka event) rather than while trying to equip ascended stuff.
Seriously? 1 months worth of gameplay lost like that?
They are not infused yet
Here it happened to other players. https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/No-warning-about-ascended-rings/page/4#post1834804
The OP was refunded with another ring.
I would love another PVT ring.. I’ll let it stay in my bag for a while and see what happens.. :/
Have you contacted the support team and explained what happened?
No? There’s no “item” section to choose.
Try it with “gameplay” or “refunds” (yeah, I know that is more for the game itself..). It seems there is no other appropriate section to choose from yet.
I think it doesn’t matter as long as you explain what happened and provide them with details. (https://en.support.guildwars2.com/app/ask/)
Good luck!
:-)
Thank you All ill try it
Cross your fingers.
Yeah, you can keep us informed. =)

There are RPGs where multiple uniques of the same type can be equipped. I haven’t played in a long time, but didn’t Diablo II work this way?
but a harsh word stirs up anger.” -Jewish Proverb
I have now submitted it via their support page here as a “gameplay” issue.
I really hope they are in a good mood when reading it
Yeah, i have learned that by now Unique..
They should mention it in a tooltip or such :/
Diablo was sort of.. pun not intended here, “unique” in its use of the word. In MMOs however, it is widely accepted as the meaning of an item that you may only equip one of. While personally I think it is rather obvious, I can see how it might come off as something of a surprise to people without an extensive history of MMO background. There should really be a warning prompt when purchasing unique items in the same way some games warn you the item will bind to your character when purchased.

They did. The word “unique” within the tooltip. It’s a lame excuse, but there was a warning given, albeit a rather subtle one.
I’ll cross my fingers for you. Hope you can find a resolution.
Protip: don’t be too aggressive for them to fix it. Don’t spam reports if you get impatient like some people do. That will only slow the process down and likely just put you back at the bottom of the queue.

Let’s all hope arenaNet will refund it for you! /cross fingers

GW1 used the word “unique” differently.
I haven’t had this problem, only because I researched extensively online about the items a while back, and noticed it on the wiki (IMO, the reason they are unique is to make it a bit “grindier” for those players who would want two offensive stat bonuses-a sort of indirect punishment.) Otherwise, I probably wouldn’t have noticed myself, as the “Unique” status is not obvious enough, and pre-ascended, one is just used to equip two of the same trinket all the time. Not a complaint, mind you, but I can see how this can be a real problem, so please be understanding of the OP’s situation
What’s even funnier is that Legendary weapons are NOT unique. :P If any item should have the denomination, it would have to be those, though they probably decided against that so people invested in more Legendaries (be it in time playing the game or real money). In my world, if the weapon is a Legend, there should only be one of them (no dual wielding of Bolts, Incinerators, etc.)-I assume, of course, one of the least popular opinions about this issue out there. Just that I can’t see how any Ascended trinket must be more unique than a Legendary weapon (and no offense meant to Incinerator dual-wielders.)
If only this gear was labeled somehow.
Perhaps with words like “unique” to note that its… well… unique… as opposed to… not unique.
JAH Bless – Equal Rights and Justice for all.
Justice And Honor – Tarnished Coast.
Sigh… Here we go again with those pros showing us how idiot and unworthy are everyone else but them…
Still funny how they proclaim all other MMOs have “unique” items with such meaning yet they don’t provide proofs.
Also, someone made a “research” in the other post and nope, unique mean nothing in most MMOs and even if all have such meaning, what make them think everyone else is a lifeless nerd who has played every single MMO?
Finally, the fact Anet give the other person a new ring is enough to prove how “self-explanatory” the word “unique” is.
-ArenaNet
The only other MMO i have ever played is Eve online
I actually never gave the “unique” situation a single thought until i couldn’t equip it.
I usually check to see if i can equip items throug the hover-pop-up-thingy that turns more or less red when i can not use a specific item.
They could make it red as well stating you already have it equipped, or something like that
I do hope that Anet is willing to do at least something.. The 4 silver its worth at the vendors isn’t so attractive. And i have seen other threads here were people had the ring switched to the right one..
They could make it red as well stating you already have it equipped, or something like that
Well it says that it is unique
Currently playing Heart of Thorns.
Well, if it’s “unique”, why does the game let you buy more then one?
Isn’t the definition of “unique”, that there can’t be more then one?
Why do simple things have to make sense?
Questions, questions…
The key word when you buy items in-game is…
UNIQUE
If you see that, just as in any MMORPG, or RPG, it means that you can only have one equipped and no more.
If it’s so unique, why let the player buy a 2nd one at all on the same character? Unique in its current form doesn’t make sense.
They could make it red as well stating you already have it equipped, or something like that
Well it says that it is unique
So ? Being the only one of it’s kind doesn’t mean “You can only wear One at a time”, those are two different things here,no matter how many times you show a blurred up version of UNIQUE,it doesn;t change the fact that its a wrong description.
I made the same mistake, OP.
Send a support ticket and ask for a different item of same value.
If it’s so unique, why let the player buy a 2nd one at all on the same character? Unique in its current form doesn’t make sense.
This is because you can have different infusion inserted. So some people have 2 (or more) with different infusions in it.
I do agree, Unique is a bit vague for the average player. It would be better if there is a confirmation box that says “You can only wear only one of this item at a time, are you sure? [Yes] [No]”
This would probably cut down the mistakes by half or more so that we don’t see so many people making the same mistakes. Also it is just a confirmation box so it shouldn’t be too hard to implement.

I played Diablo 2 for a few years, I recall having a few Unique SOJ’s on me at all times. It does not mean the same thing in all games. Kind of a tough lesson to learn here.
As promised update:
I send a support ticket under game play as suggested.
Without any hassle they send me the correct ring to me in my mail
and asked me to destroy the second copy
So it all worked out better than expected
Thank you all
Hey, that sounds great!
Have fun with your ring and enjoy GW2!
Good deal…glad it worked out for you!
Wow … refunding unknowing players but not refunding rebuyers of new stat constellations.
I’ve just done the same thing. It’s very unclear in game, and I had no idea to look for the solution to a problem that didn’t exist. You don’t look for an answer until it’s too late.
Unique could mean many things, but I wouldn’t have jumped to this conclusion until I had ruled out quite a few others. Either I shouldn’t be able to buy a second item of the same type, or they should say I can’t equip it, and give me a proper reason. Because I can buy more than one, the item is already not “unique”.

So frequently lol, this is the second one I have ever seen.
Op you made a mistake and learned from it, I doubt Anet will fix this for you. In most situations (not all) in most games unique or unique equip means you can only equip 1 of them.
What sux as it has been explained to me before is that in GW1 unique meant something totally different than it does in GW2. That is kind of kittenty on their part.
They should really change the item descriptions to unique equip.

It is account bound though so you could use it on an alt. I am not sure making it unavailable to buy if your char has one already is a good idea.

The idea that ascended items have to be unique is stupid, since there’s 2 of each stat combo just with different names. It is redundant, confusing, and takes up space. It’d make sense with legendaries but not with ascended. Why can I equip two identical exotic rings but not ascended? Why can I equip a not infused and infused ascended item even if they are the same thing? What? For a game that worked so hard to simplify the item system, this seems like a arbitrary and meaningless concept.
But due to the difficulty of acquiring laurels and this rather arbitrary terminology, a confirmation window must detail this.
for there you have been and there you will long to return.
Ruprect, he/ she already stated (five posts above yours) that he/ she received another ring from Anet…. ^^
Well I guess I missed out on this “unique” knowledge business when I took a break from the game. I just came across this same issue when buying a second ascended ring. Hopefully they respond to my support ticket.
I’m assuming there must be some other MMO where “unique” items exist and it’s known to mean you can only equip one? I don’t know why else some people would assume it was “obvious” from the word “unique”. Either that or your flavor of English usage just happens to be similar to the flavor of those who created the “Unique” tag.
I thought “unique” just meant you couldn’t find a ring with the same stats/upgrade slots anywhere else except the laurel merchants. Kind of like how there are certain unique weapon and armor skins that have to be obtained in a special way.
An example of how language has ambiguous meaning with multiple interpretations. If you don’t think language is ambiguous you don’t know anything about human languages. [/linguistics]
Seeing as how they have the “this item cannot be equipped by your profession” blurbs, I don’t see why they can’t attach a “can only equip one” blurb to these “Unique” items’ description windows.

As far as I know they still fix this by giving you the alternate ascended ring. I hope you post what Support says, either yes or no, since the issue comes up periodically and it would be good to have accurate information.
Good luck with support.
The key word when you buy items in-game is…
UNIQUE
If you see that, just as in any MMORPG, or RPG, it means that you can only have one equipped and no more.
You’d be amazed how easily people can confuse themselves. I haven’t fallen victim to this issue, but in spirit, I almost have. I was looking at rings on a laurel merchant at one point, considering buying a couple for the future, and my thought process went something like this:
“I could buy two of those zerker rings. Wait, they say unique. Isn’t that a thing I’ve seen in other games that means you can only have one equipped? But why would they have that on a special vendor? Why would they limit you like that?
And Distinguished Circle of Logic is listed as unique, yet it’s an amulet, so you can only ever equip one anyway…"
I think that had I been buying at the time, I would have erred on the side of caution and looked for two different ones. But the point is, even knowing what unique usually means, it still didn’t completely click.
It doesn’t help that I’ve only seen “unique” on ascended laurel trinkets, meaning there’s also the possibility of someone thinking, “Oh, unique means that it’s a special ascended ring. Unique as in specially made.”
I remember games like D2 that used “unique” differently though, so just MMOs?
And technically if it were unique, you shouldn’t be able to buy a 2nd one on the same character to begin with. That doesn’t make it very unique.
These days though, thanks to account bound ascended items, it’s a much smaller issue.
for there you have been and there you will long to return.
