It seems that targeting in three dimensions underwater has some interesting effects as opposed to targeting when walking around Tyria. Enemies on a ‘flat’ surface have a reticle at their feet, but in water, targets often have to be selected for some skills. is it harder to have the game programed so that everything works in a three dimensional space?

Well, when it comes to swings or bullets, it’s just a collision box. However, some attacks don’t actually attack the creature, but rather their position. On land this is easily done. X Y coordinates on a solid ground. But underwater you also have the Z coordinate, and its not just in GW2, its a difficult thing to program in any game. When underwater, every model simply carries a 1,1,1 point ‘ground’ that the skills can focus on.

Its not really easy to explain or understand, it’s just that coding such a thing is tricky, and its often easier to make a roundabout that removes the symptom rather than make a fix or cure

Some weapons are less dependent on targeting than others (Guardian GS for ex), wish they moved more towards that style for more weapons, especially under water combat. That would hide a lot of the problems with the targeting.

Pretty similar to the warrior’s GS. When I play as a warrior, I always disable the targetting assistent, because having no target as a warrior means you can place and aim your swings as free as you please. Kinda like a hack and slash or metroidvania style. Gotta learn the reach of your sword and then use it
