I hate jumping puzzles, I can’t do them very well. When they are off to the side and optional, it’s okay. But why are they a part of fractals and other map areas where it isn’t just an optional thing? Some people don’t like PvP and avoid PvP, and there are a lot of ways to avoid it. But if you want to do just about anything, there’s no way to avoid jumping puzzles/areas.

Well, fractals are supposed to be high-end content that puts to the test the skills throughout the whole game – JP included, I suppose. Not to mention, it does make for some interesting map design and encounter (Or frustrating. I’m looking at you colossus traps and harpies with knockback on the professor mew map.)

It seems you think of jumping puzzles, or challenges involving jumping, as just some side part of Guild Wars 2. You wouldn’t say “Can’t avoid combat. Why?” About fractals or the likes, so keep that mentality for jumping as well. Jumping challenges are a part of the core game, Not just an optional piece on the side.

I remember the first time I did this fractal. It was….bad. We’ll just leave it at that.

Still need to learn the skip tricks. Lets jumping is good.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

Advertised? Do you know how many features aren’t advertised with a game? Like, all of them. Of course you those core features thrown at you in the advertisements like “Hey look, you can glide! And would you look at these things called masteries?” But no game is going to have a label on the side saying “WARNING: this game is going to have an amount of jumping that exceeds the regular amount of jumping in what you may consider to be your average MMO”. In fact, one might argue that this game doesn’t have ENOUGH mandatory jumping, and who’s to argue with them? It’s all subjective.

You mean why can’t you avoid jumping? (“Jumping Puzzle” has a more narrow definition in the game and they can be avoided for the most part.) Because they are not a game mode by themselves, but part of the environment that we play in, i.e. they are included in the ‘E’ of PvE.

When I first started playing, I couldn’t do any jumping puzzles at all and so I practiced to get better. I took 3-5 characters through the LA JPs every day until I could do them without trouble — an exercise that took me ages. (I am embarrassed to admit how long it took me to finish Urmaug’s Secret the fourth time, never mind the first time.)

Another really good place to improve JP skills is the Silverwastes JP: using the right route, there aren’t any precision jumps, no timers, and plenty of room to try things out. (FYI IMO The Jade Prince video has a route that is superior to the one on Dulfy.)

I’m still no expert (e.g. I haven’t been able to complete the wintersday JP), but at least they don’t slow me down any longer. And I have a lot of fun learning new JPs as they are added to the game.

It’s your choice whether to let jumping interfere with your fun; for better or worse, jumps are going to continue to be fundamental to the game.

Maybe, but jumping is an integrally mixed in part of the pve game and was one of the earliest advertised things about GW2 during development. I understand the hatred of JP’s I really – I hated them for a long while and I still avoid some aspects where I know frustration outweighs fun, however I do recognise and accept that they are part and parcel of the pve experience with GW2.

There is very little mandatory content for them though and where there is, aids are in place.

eg: Dry Top, the crystals far and away make the experience easier
and in Maguuma Gliding + mushrooms almost completely negate the need for much jumping.

GW2’s style hinges on things like an action orientated combat and a focus on jumping and utilising as much dimensions of gameplay (hence underwater combat and gliding). I really doubt they will deviate from this direction since is so fundamental to the game itself and opens up a lot of options for them to develop content.

As for “carebears” who avoid pvp (like me), well pvp is very different to pve and thus is developed and founded with different principles. It also attracts a different playerbase. It is good development sense to keep the two separate and not force either type of player together. They haven’t always succeeded here and more work still needs to be done, but they do a better job than many at keeping them separate, as well they should.

In GW1, which was my first experience with GW in 2004, characters could not jump, as in not even a jump standing in place unless you used the dance emote then some of them jumped. People asked for characters that could jump. I’m one of them, but not in this fashion, those games with jumping PUZZLES were never something I enjoyed, a jump once in awhile yes but overboard no. In GW2 the jumping aspect is something I despise greatly. I just plan and simple won’t do jumping puzzles because I hate them. I like all the other aspects of it (yes I have HoT and still find other ways around the kitten jumping puzzles) a little here and there, yes, but that no. It hasn’t always been ingratiated so much into the GW games. I adjust my play to avoid them, I don’t want anything, nothing, that bad that I would do them. (I don’t need to be “reminded” of what I am “missing” btw, I already know, and its not worth it to me to do them, it might be worth it to YOU but not to me. I’ve been with GW2 since beta, there is plenty to do that I actually like doing and I’ll forgo jumping puzzles. Again, for YOU wanting the things behind puzzles is important, for me its not. The dislike of them far outweighs the rewards for ME. I was even thinking of fractals, as I do have ascended armor and felt ready after all this time to try them, but I read this, and nope I’ll stay out of them. Better for you and for me.

Jumping may not be in the same category as combat but how about dodging, or changing which skills you use to suit the content you’re doing?

Those are both similar in that to some people they seem like minor mechanics that should be optional, but sooner or later you’re going to come across content that you absolutely cannot complete without them. And believe me people do complain when that happens.

Should they therefore remove those requirements? Or would you say it’s something they need to accept and practice so they can get better at it and it won’t bother them any more?

(For what it’s worth all 3 are things I was terrible at when I started and have had to learn in order to play the game. Now, after 3 years and a huge amount of practice they’re all things which don’t bother me.)

Jumping puzzles are well implemented in this game, you can do almost everything in this game by skipping them and they are pretty easy to do aswell. Think of them as a training for pvp as you need to practice your reflections and reactions.

As someone who has to take motion sickness pills in order to do most jumping puzzles, I definitely sympathize. I also understand that they are just part of the game, and while I hate to take shortcuts most of the time, I will request a Mesmer port if it’s something I need to do to obtain another goal (and it’s possible).

Personally, I think it would make a huge difference if there could be specific gating areas of the more intricate ones. Once you pass a gate, if you fall, you go back to that gate, instead of having to start the entire thing over again.

Lol, I hate them too. Whenever I need to do one I can’t complete, I call for a friend to come here and do it for me. But really, it should not be part of the core game. I will always object that and quit playing or buy new content if that happens. Until the expansion we could do without (though I did miss the season 2 completion because of that). Anyway, I’m afraid the point of no return has already been passed. This is a new direction in the game, like it or not. For me, it means I stick to the old content and don’t buy new anymore.

Mesmers can port you so you don’t have to do the jumops yourself. That’s true.
But I don’t believe any class you can play has a skill that can do a jump for you (aka skip). Granted some have port skills, but the forward ones only jump to places you could normally walk to, so no jumping. And a mesmer/necro portal only makes you able to swap between two places you been before. So you drop a portal where you are to get back. It won’t get you forward. You still need to get there yourself first if you are the mesmer. So i am wondering which skills you mean, or which way an ele, thief or mesmer can skip anything, let alone everything, and with which skills.

The best jump (forward) “skill” i found to do “jumping for you” is the experimental gun item, which any class high level enough can use. But i doubt that will make it easier.

I actually enjoyed GW2 at launch much more. The jumping puzzles were optional and sparse as was certain content such as SAB, fractals and drytop, with most other added content more to my liking. With the release of Hot and the awful new WvW maps (although gorgeous) it seems to be more in your face, even though they implemented gliding in the new maps. Making us jump through hoops, literally, to get to the best jump off spots to complete content such as map completion annoys me.

I can avoid certain things as was mentioned, but I paid for the Xpac and when I can only enjoy a small portion of it without having to rely on jumping it was/is a waste of my money. I wouldn’t mind paying money for content even if I cannot enjoy all of it, but at least let players such as myself enjoy the majority of it.

I know many disagree with me and that is good, we need differing opinions. However, this Xpac offered me very little to enjoy, so I am playing something else until I see something more to my liking.

In Fractals only the Cliffside and the Uncategorized have some sort of JP, the Uncategorized you only need to be able to jump forward into a quite big platform, no need of any skill, for Cliffside you can aim the teleport skills in the bottom of the platforms to go to the top of the platforms, and the jump skill required for the rest is VERY minimal, no need to corner jump or precise jump or dodge jump or anything, all you need to do is jump forward and there is a big margin for error.

I know that JP is not for everyone but in fractals you don’t have any, the only thing I can see that “requires” JP is if you want to get map completion, then there are a couple Vistas that are behind JPs.

I don’t see a need in any fractal for jump forward skills, at all. Teleport skills on the other hand yes.

The ones which Anet classifies as jumping puzzles are usually longer and more complicated (and in most cases a big part of the challenge is figuring out the route).

But for some reason some players apply the term jumping puzzle to anything in the game which requires jumping to reach.

Some Fractals have jumping puzzle like jumps in them.

With the current change to fractals, there is a possibility that you don’t have to do them more than once for every time they show up on the list of shards. Because you can choose to just not do that level.

Now you don’t have to hope and pray that you don’t get one of the ones with some jumping puzzle like jumps in them.

Don’t take the OP’s use of the term too literally. The OP just means that they have trouble with jumping generally and especially when there are other dynamic game mechanics present, e.g. combat.

Think of the thread a being entitled, “why is jumping required”? and written from the point of view of someone that has trouble getting up to Old Tom even after the harpies are dispatched.

I haven’t seen enough to tell me that they are incapable of making the gliding not adversely affect jumping puzzles given their current state and what would be needed to do so.

Most jumping puzzles go up or in tight spaces where jumping is difficult and short spaces away, meaning gliding wouldn’t get you to where you need to be. Unless they put in updrafts, but I highly doubt they would do that right on top of a jumping puzzles.

I hate PVP, and yet I had to do it to get an armor skin I wanted, so we all have to do content we don’t enjoy to get things we like. I personally LOVE JPs I think it’s original to have an MMO with them, most other MMOs are just kill enemies, grind items, rinse and repeat forever.
the few JPs that are required to get something else (the fractal one, and a few skill points) are really easy so just like I had to suck it up and play pvp to get my armor, do the same, and learn to jump.
