Can't get ''into'' guild wars 2
I think the best thing to do would be to join a new-player friendly guild. I know you’re not actually new, but it means they’re likely to be willing to provide guidance and help where necessary.
Alternatively what’s wrong with having a to-do list? I use them in several games, sometimes long term ones, sometimes short term ones. For example in Elder Scrolls games I’ll often make a list of all the quests I want to complete/make progress on when I head out to a particular area, especially if it’s going to take me a few hours (in real life) as I may have to do it over several play sessions. I have a list of every single thing I want to complete on each of my GW1 characters which I’m still (slowly) working through.
At the moment I’ve only got a mental list for GW2, although I have an entire spreadsheet to keep track of story instances I’ve done and need to do (I’m aiming to play every version of the story).
But ultimately I think it’s worth remembering that it’s virtually impossible to do things wrong in this game. Anything you don’t do now you can come back to later and anything you are doing you can’t really do wrong. So you don’t need to worry too much about when or how to do things, just do whatever interests you at the time.

I think a lot of players do these things, maybe in this order (sort of), maybe not:
Get one or more characters to L80.
Work on/complete World Map Completion (and complete maps that are not part of WMC)
Get one or more Crafting Disciplines to max level
Work on/finish any Achievements that are of interest – Complete an Achievement for a Title or reward
Accumulate Gold for a purchase from the Gem Store (either cosmetic or account-upgrade)
Work/play in-game to acquire specific gear (BiS armor/Legendary weapon/other skin of choice)
Just a few things some players enjoy aiming to attain. =)
Oh! And if you are unsure about how to attain any goals, the Wiki and/or the Dulfy site are quite helpful and informative.
Good luck.

Hmmm, well what do you like to do? Do you prefer pve, spvp or wvw? Or all three? I do recommend giving all 3 a shot if you haven’t already. Do you like dungeons/fractals? You can work on those.
For more casual things you can work on map completion, jumping puzzles, world boss farming, or go to the silverwastes. Crafting, though not very exciting can be a goal so that you can make Ascended gear. Or you can work on getting a legendary.
If you haven’t joined a guild, I do recommend it. Your guild might have activities set up, like WvW night, dungeon night or guild missions. Look for an active, but friendly one.
I think what you need to do is make one important decision: what part of the game do you enjoy playing the most? Open world exploration, dungeons, PvP, WvW, Fractals of the Mists? Once you decide which of these you enjoy doing most, the “to-do” list for getting appropriate gear, creating a working “build” for your role (solo, team support, etc.), finding a group to run the content with (if need be), kind of creates itself and gives you the immediate guidance you need.
As long as the end goal is something you enjoy, the process in reaching it – even if it’s tedious farming – will be worth it because you don’t hit the end and go, “Well crap, what now?”. Instead you are rewarded with the ability to continuously play the content you like. If at some point that gets stale, experiment with content you may not be familiar with. I have a guildie that just discovered how much he enjoys PvP; he never tried it before, but now it’s all he does.

Volks World [VW]
So this game, I keep coming back to it and willing to play, but the thing is that there is alot to do but I have no idea where to start or how to even do half of it. Feels like I need to create a ‘’to do list’’ but is there anyone else that has had this problem? I eventually take breaks from the game because of this, i just feel lost and unmotivated as a result.
so yeah can anybody offer advice? I know that there is no preset way to play an MMO but any advice would be nice
For this mmo, i reccomend world completion and personal story as the main goal you first playthrough. Take your time on the open world to explore and appreciate side events.
The game could do with a few optional guiding plotlines but only has personal story for now.
Ah, yes. Personal Story. I forgot that one. Good call^. =)
I always powered leveled my toons to 80 in Edge of the Mists ASAP because the idea of Personal Story being interrupted by level grinding anyway annoyed the hell out of me

This is mainly about world completion, and personally wouldn’t recommend it, at least not full. Getting a lot of the POI and some vistas are more pain then worth. Though a more limited of hearts + waypoints + maybe some vistas. Full completion should be saved for alts or those who are ready to craft a legendary.
When it comes to experiencing the different aspects, I personally do a cheesy route. I pick looks for the character through the bank, then let the skins decide and sets a goal.

It depends on what you like doing. I love exploring so getting all the vistas and POI’s was a non-issue to me, I’d want to get to those locations regardless of what the reward is.
But that’s one of the good things about GW2, there’s very little that you absolutely have to do. I’ve barely touched PvP because it doesn’t really interest me but I spent hours exploring the maps and doing things like talking to all the named NPCs, other people may have never entered many of the PvE maps because they spend most their time in WvW.

Got 9 world completions.
My advice would be to aim for a world completion with one character whilst doing the personal story as well. By the time you’ve achieved that you should have some idea of what you want to do.
Normally, I tend to complete a map of an area/region before moving to another. Focusing on smaller areas makes it easier than looking at what’s left to do on the world map. Plus newer areas are not part of the world completion (unless they change it in the future).

I will second this suggestion. Breaking the game up into smaller, more managable, chunks might help.
Your problem sounds a little strange to me but it’s familiar because this game isn’t like others where there is a whole bunch of things you need to do to get BiS gear to play the next level of dungeons or access the next area, etc… this sort of leaves people a little lost who aren’t used to playing by numbers.
This game doesn’t tell you want to do, so if you are of the mindset that you have to do this and that, you need to change how you think. In fact, I think everyone playing this game coming from a more traditional MMO had to change many of the ways they think stuff worked.
The bottomline .. if you get a full set of Exotic gear, you can pretty much do whatever you decide in PVE. ln PVP, it’s even more simple because there is no levels or gear you have to achieve. It’s very open ended.
For instance, my goals are to not make bad decisions with how or when I sell my farmed mats on the TP. Doesn’t sound like much or even very specific but for me, it’s alot of fun to take advantage of things like selling lemongrass to people at historically high prices.
