I actually prepurchased two copies of GW2 way back in beta for my husband and I, but because of various things he’s been unable to jump in until now. So today he goes to finally make a character, asks me what server we’re on, and tells me he can’t select it because it’s full.

First of all, GW2’s world servers are handled ridiculously for a number of reasons, but more importantly: I keep finding conflicting information. Is the “full” status a permanent thing, i.e. would someone with their account tied to a particular world server have to transfer off for a spot to open up, or is “full” a dynamic thing, as in there are too many people playing on the server at this moment? Can an Arenanet rep weigh in on this?

It’s dynamic. You can see servers fluctuate between Full and High depending on the time of day.

Try very late at night/early am to transfer to a Full server.

If playing with your spouse is really the reason behind your frustration, i don’t see why a (free) server transfer won’t solve your issues. Just sayin…

You won’t need arenanet rep to weigh in. There have been several threads on this.

I will explain what is going on.

The Full Status is not a permanent thing. Every day and probably every hour. Someone somewhere is transferring off a server. I happen to have chosen a server that has been a full server since nearly launch. Isle of Janthir. I have had several people join the game as recently as a week ago and they wanted to join our guild and our server. What they had to do was just try to check different times of the day and try to transfer over. Some where able to transfer over in a day others it took 4-5 days. It’s just a matter of finding a time when someone has left the server leaving room for you husband to move over.

Thanks Karizee/DMK. And yeah I found several threads … full of replies indicating “full” was dynamic and replies indicating it was a permanent state of affairs re: accounts tied to a given world server, which freaked me out enough to start yet another thread asking about it.

Also, re: me just transferring — there’s other people I want to play with on this particular server, which is why I’m on it at all.

My hubby and I had the same issue but I knew if I kept checking the server we wanted it would show available at some point for both of us. It took part of one evening but Isle of Janthir went down to High from Full and I changed servers while hubby logged in and got set up and we were in! It took a bit of patience but very doable.

@squidbunny just hang in there and you and your husband will eventually get onto the same server. I know it’s a pain but it will end soon. In the meantime you can still be in the same guild even cross server and you can chat through there (although you probably are both in the same room so I guess you can chat there too )

A friend of mine bought the game and tried to get on our server (Isle of Janthir). It was full, so he joined another.

Every day he tried to get on, and he got in after 3 days.

People casually transfer in and out in order to get a better play in WvW, so you’ll probably be able to play together within a few days! No worries!

I had two friends start recently. I sucked it up and moved from SoS (where I started, and I missed getting to Tier 1 with them, oh well) to Emhry Bay, where I’m having a blast in WvW. First half a week was tough, this past week and the week before were rather easy. I hear next week will be tough again.

So come on over.

I also have another couple that might be starting soon, and this way they should be able to get on without a problem.
