Can the Community Team Refrain from Politics?
A large portion of their players base DOES agree, and apparently at least part of their staff also agrees. If you don’t agree with their stance, that’s fine; you’re completely allowed to do so. But a company is allowed to post things even if part of their audience doesn’t agree with them.
(edited by RoseofGilead.8907)
You don’t have to agree or believe but everyone has the right to love the person that they love. Also everyone deserves the most basic of human rights and that’s to be treated with respect and dignity no matter your sexuality, race, religion, size or disability.
“ANet. They never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity to not mess up.”
Mod “Posts created to cause unrest with unfounded claims are not allowed” lmao
Devs are people, too. =)
Please remember that a very minor portion of your player base doesn’t agree with the court’s decision today.
FTFY
Also you’re in breach of the code of conduct.
Do not post:
which promotes hatred of any kind, including that based on nation, race, religion, age, sex, gender orientation, or culture.
11x level 80’s 80+ Titles 2600+ skins , still a long way to go.
If the community can’t refrain from politics why should the company reps?
Would you like some hard cheeze with your sad whine?

Do you have numbers on this “large portion”? I don’t see anyone complaining about it in-game, on Reddit, and this is the first post about it on the forums.
Everyone deserves basic human rights and being able to marry who you love is one of them. If you’re teaching your kids otherwise, you don’t deserve to be a parent.

I think you missed the part where a majority of Americans are now more supportive of same sex marriage than previously. That’s why, as an inclusive American company, Anet shared their support for the Supreme Court’s decision.
If you’re not happy with it, simply close the browser tab that shows the tweet. No one’s forcing you to view a picture of two male in-game characters at the wedding chapel.
Speak for yourself. If so many people are still obsessed with keeping anyone different from themselves oppressed then we would be hearing a bigger outcry for Anet to delete these characters and pretend that heterosexual, same-race marriages are all that exist and anything else should be burned to the ground. :P
I actually see your point, It is very dangerous PR for Gw2 to dip into social topics.
But this is actually kinda appropriate to Gw2.
There are several prominent gay couples in the game’s story and an ENTIRE race that seems to be bisexual by default. Though Sylvari have no sexual organs, so the “sexual” part of that is kind of a misnomer. Their genders are purely aesthetic.
Also that Transwoman NPC. And to top it off, Tybalt was quite the crossdresser. God tier drag queen right there.
But if anyone’s worried about a “Gay Agenda” Gw2 has been on the gay agenda train for quite a while now.
Oh, I can drag this out even further. No trinity, every class has heal skills.

The game features homosexual relationships. Two prominently. The image you’re complaining about isn’t politics, it’s ANet doing something they’ve done already: endorsing liberty.

Considering the demographic of MMO players, i would think it’s a substantially tiny portion of the playerbase, also, who gives a kitten?
ERP guild looking for members.
Let me remind you that all sylvari are basicly lesbian/gay/insectual lovers? (Uh, Failoin and Kaith?.. Girl on girl plant action there.. nudge nudge wink wink; lets not forget they are also sisters.. Or was it okay for women to be gay, just not guys?)
Edit: Also, the people who are against this (Who it clearly dosent effect in any way) are, in my eyes, clearly just homophobes.
(edited by Raven.3957)
BTW – the issue of same-sex marriage is no longer a political issue. It’s a fundamental right guaranteed by the Constitution, as per the SCOTUS decision.
Please remember that a very large portion of your player base doesn’t agree with the court’s decision today.
It doesn’t matter if players agree. Its the law. Part of the reason for the existence of the supreme court is to have a check against popular opinion in the form of the elected legislative and executive branches of the government.
The decision was made by experts. I doubt that a very large portion of the playerbase are constitutional lawyers.
Its a twitter account, not an in game requirement that your character marry someone of the same sex.
The world is changing, and Anet isn’t living in the stone age like most other companies. They embrace the new world and welcome it.
I might butt heads and not get along with Anet much if at all, but I respect what they are doing. They keep up with the times and welcome all diversity.
Besides, we’ve had a male on male relationship already in game (if you want to call it that with the Sylvari’s), we already have two main stars that are in a lesbian relationship and have had a whole living story, and second living story with them in it, with all kinds of flirty banter and actual kissing between them, and we have a transgender (don’t hurt me if I got that wrong) NPC now that you can talk to as well. And now a picture of two male Nords getting married is too much?…….
Lady Bethany Of Noh – Chronomancer – Lords of Noh [LoN]
…and strike a win for equality, everyone who disagrees are welcome to play any other game. Thank you ANET!
According to the research polls, over 60% of Americans are now in favor of letting gays marry. Gamers are typically in the younger (under 40) generations and that demographic is typically more liberal leaning than older generations.
All that would imply a majority of GW2 players are in favor of this. Even with a minority who don’t agree, I would hesitate to even call it a very large portion.
But you’re entitled to your opinion and I’m entitled to say you’re wrong. Aren’t words wonderful?
Many thanks to GW2 for your support in the LGBTIQA+ community and your positive and affirming tweet this morning!
Much <3 to all in America that can finally get married in any state
Also, since I’m not able to participate in the design-a-guild-logo contest, can someone please design a rainbow emblem :-P it’s SO appropriate right now :-D

Well, this didn’t end well….
….for the OP.
it looks like your “large portion” of the community ended up being not so large after all…
Anet has been on this side of the road for quite a while.
and PR teams usually take important events to get some attention to their brand, it’s what they do.
I think Gaile needs to close this thread. The OP is getting ripped apart in the responses to his thread.
Yes, I also find it offensive that a distasteful concept is being celebrated in a game.
But, I’m not talking about gay marriage, here, I’m talking about all marriage.
Obviously, I’m joking to an extent, but quite honestly, I think the answer to this “problem” would have been to extend civil partnerships to straight people, all along.
That way, only very traditional, religious, couples would go the marriage route and the rest of us would just go the civil partnership route.
That way, we would have all been equal, without all this hassle and upset in the religious community and traditional marriage would have probably been thought of as the outmoded concept it essentially is and would have, gradually, gone the way of the dodo.
All that would imply a majority of GW2 players are in favor of this.
Not necessarily. Too many ifs.
If MMO players follow general gaming norms regarding age.
If GW2 players follow MMO gaming norms regarding age.
If GW2 players follow liberal trends according to age.
and so on.
Still, I favor it (and am male, heterosexual, a registered republican, and over the age of 40).
I’m looking forward to playing with one less homophobe.
And please, it’s not all about you Americans, Europe is incredibly supportive of same sex relationships all the way through to marriage. Now we all need to work on Russia..

Isnt same sex marriage only recognized in less than 25% (11 out of 50, 12 as of 2017) of European countries ?
My apologies if I am reading the wikipedia entry incorrectly or if it is out of date or incorrect.
Now we all need to work on Russia..
And the Australian federal government. Let’s throw some Aussie politics in as well!

Yeah, but if you look at the map, it’s legal in most of Western Europe and even in most of the parts of Western Europe that don’t have it yet, civil partnerships (or the equivalent) exist.
The exception would be Italy, which is because it is (obviously) a predominantly Catholic country.
Western Europe and Eastern Europe are still quite different, in terms of views and so on, with Western Europe typically being far more progressive.
(edited by Tigaseye.2047)
that’s the problem with these people, they say they are not accepted because there are a few non straight npc’s in the game or that the devs support marriage for everyone. If in the game there were NO straight npcs and the devs ONLY supported gay marriage and not straight marriage, THEN they could claim they are not supportive of them.
but how it appears their beliefs consist in taking away the rights of others, the moment these rights are granted, they believe they are being attacked.
There are more npc hetero relationships in this game than there are homosexual.
Honest question here:
How many main (starring role) NPCs are engaged in hetero relationships compared to same sex relationships ?

Well, currently none, since the only relationship among the main characters that is detailed at all is Kasmeer and Marjory.

My point was that the poster was being dismissive about American views, where its legal for over 321 million people while, lauding European views where its legal for just over 243 million.
This topic is lol
In before closure because people took celebrating a good change in the world as instant doom of a kittening game.

I would consider Faolain a major NPC (starring role), albeit a villain. So four characters engaged in same sex relationships while none engaged in opposite sex relationships.
I don’t have a problem with this (or wouldn’t if Marjory/Kasmeer’s were better written), am glad to see diversity, but it does stand in contrast to the claim I was responding to.
OP-person… You know, if you just calm down & watch things unfold, you may find this isn’t as terrifying as you imagined. You might have to get used to something other than what you’re accustomed to, but your life would probably be happier & your relations with others more positive if you just sat back & listened. Maybe read a few articles about these couples, what this means to them. It’s no lack of respect for marriage, it’s an outpouring of respect. Just give it a chance.
Let me remind you that all sylvari are basicly lesbian/gay/insectual lovers?
The insects are consenting adults of their respective species I hope?

It’s kind of sad really. It’s like when little kids throw a tantrum because you gave their brother the same treat you gave them and they wanted it all for themselves so they could be special. So many people want to be the best most special snowflake and for anyone who isn’t like them to be put down to make themselves feel better. So many people believe there’s only one god and he’s on their side, and anyone who disagrees should be punished.
The people who endorse oppressing and harassing homosexuals and members of other religious groups are pretty much hypocrites, too, because they preach “love everyone as you love yourself” and “treat others the way you want to be treated” then say “You can’t marry the one you love because I (a complete stranger unaffiliated with you in any way) don’t like it.”

It’s happening again…it’s happening AGAIN….not another thread like this.
ArenaNet has a stupid habit of splitting its community in half
If you disagree with their actions, don’t support ArenaNet, its employees or its franchise

Yeah, that’s true.
But, in a way, why would you want to be a member of a club that doesn’t seem to want you?
Might be better to make your own club, instead.
Maybe there could have been another type of partnership created (for both gay and straight religious couples), with religious references, instead?
I’m pro-gay marriage, for those who want it; I just question whether any of us should really want traditional marriage.
To calm things down, I would like to state for the record that I’m in a traditional marriage. And let me tell you, marriage isn’t all rainbows and unicorns that I was falsely led to believe in the movies.

I can’t say I understand it (I’ve thought any god we were told to pray to from the age of 5 must be evil or not there – nothing nice demands you praise it). But there are many who do have belief in religions while being gay and laws have to be equal.
The “we’re becoming too integrated and losing our culture” side of things is always, I suppose, a bother, but worth it for the gains I think. You can even do both I know a married couple who still do all the naughty undergound stuff anyway.
The important thing is we are equal before the law – as a Brit I have a lot invested in the rule of law.
I don’t care how many people agree or disagree with the court’s decision but I do find it annoying when a company takes a position on political issues.
There are a bunch of reasons why and I’d rather not get too deep into it. To keep it simple; just do your job ANet, which is making Guild Wars.
It’s not politics it’s simply establishing equal rights across state lines, just like interracial marriage ruling the court made nearly 50 years ago in Loving v. Virginia. It’s a 14th Amendment issue.
The ruling only affects the secular legal definition in terms of essentially contract law and not any religious connotation associated with it.
You can still be as personally biased against same sex marriage, it’s just saying that state governments can’t be.
I still will have Jory out as my mini for my Thief.

I don’t follow the whole story that much, but from what I remember there were several heterosexual relationships in the game so far:
Logan and Queen Jenna. (human)
Kazz and Doxa (asura).
Eir and Borje. (norn)
Snarl and Galina. (charr)
(Hinted) Rox and Braham. (charr + norn)
Zott and Elli. (asura)
Canach and Anise. (sylvari and human)
and there are probably more, too. It’s not like Anet only endorses same-sex relationships (or even hinted at it).
