Can we take a moment to appreciate..
… the fact that this game has very good variety of different types of armors and weapons. Im a sci-fi and guns lover and i always loved sci-fi fantasy games/movies/anime etc. I find my self very very satisfied because im able to create a futurist look for my engineer. Thanks Anet.
As mcuh hate as I lob towards ANet, fact is I’m still playing this game for a reason. There is a lot fo build diversity, not all of it suites everythign but there are uses for a lot fo stuff that sees little use, can’t fault them for coming up with good ideas that simply dont’ fit into meta’s.
It is a good thing that you enjoy your futuristic trenchcoat while others that prefer a more traditional fantasy look can fine a rustic/piratey trenchcoat that they like as well.
As Bran said, it’s a good thing that your preferred look is easily achieved. In fact, it’s hard to NOT look like that. It’s quite sad, because a lot of us don’t want to look like that at all.
It’s both a good and a bad thing, I feel. On one hand it is, of course, nice to have lots of diversity, so everyone can have a look that he likes.
On the other hand I am occasionally baffled by how little some looks seem to actually fit into the world. Quaggan backpacks and the like, for example, don’t feel like something that would fit into Tyria. Or that weird bow that shoots unicorms and leaves behind rainbow horseshoes on the ground.
It’s just… really jarring how little effort seems to have been put into making those looks fit into the actual world. We never see NPCs running around like this (at least to my knowledge, I might be wrong there), which makes it feel really strange.
That is, however, just a personal nitpick. I still enjoy the variety, I just wish they would put more effort into making said variety actually fit the theme.

Until they add pants for light I will never agree that GW2 has good variety. 95% of the leggings are skirts and the other 5% is panties.
GW 2 has a large variety in genre types of armor like pirate, scifi, medieval etc unfortunately all the armor is exaggerated and some aspect of the armor pieces are either silly, goofy, or made to large and out of proportion. Anet needs to add some toned down armor sets with calm designs with no exaggerated features and no parts sticking so far out the parts look obnoxious. Last the medium armor is flamboyant the game needs medium armor that looks like is meant to be used in combat and not to just look fancy.

I’ve found a singular pair that work for me and so sadly I have to use them on all my light armor users. Seriously, 1 pair of pants for multiple characters. It’s sad. There are a couple more, but they are super odd looking to me. They look more like leggings than pants.
And what’s worse is that it’s not just a light armor thing. All armor classes suffer from a similar problem: They follow a very particular (and polarizing) trend. They all have skirts, coats, or robe/dress hangings. It’s like they take all the armor concepts and right before release they decide to glue on some weird butt-stuff. I have no idea what their agenda is with that, but it’s upsetting!

It’s true. Everything is all very fantastical and theatrical. I only play male characters and I want them to just look closer to reality and preferably manly.

I agree with that
For how old the game is and how integral skins are to progression and collections, there are WAY too few models in the game. What is even worse is a fair number are currently unobtainable or locked behind the lockbox lotto wall.
Even though the quality is overall lower, WoW has a much MUCH larger variety for visuals than GW2 by several magnitudes. Thousands of armor models. Even more weapon models. It’s VERY easy to look unique if you try. Meanwhile in GW2, if you want to look good, you will see many others with the same gear. Not very inspiring.
So no, I would argue variety is very lacking and HoT needs to double the available armor models in the game, or at least add 50%. And with the new models, add same variety and give Asura and Charr some love. Instead of taking normal armor and stretching it for their models.
