Not a single session of GW2 recently has NOT seen me die to this at least once.
Doorways, small bumps on the ground, rocks, fallen trees, seams between rock terrain and dirt terrain, seemingly half the ground in the entire game breaks any teleport. Shadowstep, Blink, Lightning Flash, etc. These abilities are frequently used as an escape from messy situations so I’m often dying when I see this error.

Just the latest one was a 2v2 in WvW in which I couldn’t Lightning Flash to safety because I was standing on the border between some dirt terrain and some paved terrain. I couldn’t blink 10 feet to safety because there was a seam between terrain types.

And that’s the core issue. Secondary is that these abilities don’t work on hills or cliffs or across small gaps. In many PvP maps you can blink up to walkways or across a gap no problem, but on other maps, like Skyhammer, 90% of which destroys blink ability use, and in the wider PvE world, blinks are worthless because you can’t hop anywhere. You can’t take a shortcut to get vistas. You can’t escape a messy group of enemies by blinking up a ledge. You can’t do anything with the ability aside from teleport short, flat distances on even terrain.

So why are blinks even in the game if they’re going to be so handicapped?

He wants to use his teleport skills. Read his text before you post.

This was added to try to stop players from using blink/shadow step to get into objectives in wvw I believe. I see it sometimes but I’ve never had the problem with lightning flash. I use it all the time to get a distance from my enemies when multiple ones are chasing me down.

You can still blink up most small hills and terrains as I still use it all the time to get away from enemies and get the high ground advantage. Places like the bridge at duri, not the bridge itself but the cliffs next to it, can be blinked back up if you fall down. Also the small hills by the grub still work and the hills by anz near the dredge tunnel work as well. Several other places still work as well.

Of course if you target a tree or something else you may get the invalid path but from what I’ve seen most still work.

Just to play devil’s advocate, what is there to exploit exactly? The only thing beyond the maps is endless sea. If Blink isn’t allowed to hop small gaps, why are we allowed to use Leap skills for the same purpose?

EDIT: Also, shadow stepping and necrotic traversal were easy to abuse to get out of maps in GW1, yet it was never restricted. As I mentioned before, there’s nothing outside the maps anyway.

ppl abuse blinks in dungeons etc all the times by skipping mobs that are intended to fight or skip sections of the path to get rewards faster than intended

its a cheap exploits they really should just take teleports and stealth out of thegame

what annoys me on porting is, that it got a nerfin a late patc, which never happened
or in other words, i thought anet changed ports so, that u dont port, if there isnt a valid path
But why are Mes, thiefs, ele and guards still able to port for example in midpoint in niflhel to the upper field? Or in Khylo from the side of the tower up to the wooden bridge?
Others need to run seconds or up to a minute to get there and with a port in a second
that should not work when anet says it shouldnt work.

I’ve had No Valid Path kill me a few times as well, notably in Silverwastes. I can’t move out of aoe when downed, and I can’t Steal or Shadowstep over a tiny stone step atop the Amber Fort walls when dealing with Mordrem attacking the east cannon.

I don’t mind when there really is no valid path (eg the old way to sneak through the iron gate into uninstanced Salma), but anywhere one could legitimately jump to either with a simple jump or with a leap skill should be considered a valid path for blinks and shadowsteps.

This honestly needs to get looked at. Was trying to use my number 2 skill(Blinding flash) On my guardian…to close with a champion..“No valid Path” Skill goes on cooldown, i go nowhere. Over flat ground. Fun times.

The pvp community reminds me of what Obi-kittenenobi describes Mos Eisley as from star wars.

This got me a few days ago. I got downed on a fort wall in Silverwastes on my glass cannon thief and couldn’t use my downed teleport to get out of the AoE being spewn at me from the ground so I had to sit and eat it and die instead of pick myself back up from out of sight as I should’ve.

A million times this. Stopped playing Silverwastes on my thief all together because my downed teleport lost all functionality against VW. I absolutely agree that if a player could get somewhere naturally, you should be able to teleport, with the possible exception of within jumping puzzles or other notably difficult jumping sections.

How about its cousin random “target is too close” even though you can use the same skill point blank?

The issue is that the teleportation mechanic is still not 100% fixed/refined. The old version was better, but also allowed for exploits. This version is more inconsistent, but fixes some of the exploits. They still have a ways to go on making it work flawlessly.
