A:

The basic principle of market manipulation is that if you can’t control the supply, you can’t control the market. The number of items you could actually attempt real market “manipulation” with are very few and I’d be willing to bet somebody at Anet keeps a close eye on those items (but I doubt they would intervien in anyone trying to manipulate them….most likely they would joke about it as its likely to end in catastrophic failure).

Now if you are talking some sort of social market manipulation (basically conning other players into a market to take advantage of them), I’m not sure how they would view that much less be able to prove or detect it.

…..
They have logs on it all. Even your chats, not whispers though (if it is the same as GW1).

I’m pretty sure if it’s typed while in game, there is a log of it somewhere. All assumption of privacy is lost when you agreed to the EULA

Oh, and per the EULA, I’m pretty sure they can ban you for absolutely nothing and you have no say (not saying they would do that, but they certainly have the power to do so).

What do you mean by manipulating? Buying out the thousands (or hundreds in the case of precursers) and jacking up the price to sell back? While it may work, I don’t think that many would sell at whatever inflated price you set them at. Most people, especially when buying in bulk, will place buy orders, which can be way off from the highest sell order. So lets say you want to be all the T2 mats, and mark them up say 200% and resell them. They won’t sell at that mark up, but at whatever the highest buy order is, which would fall more in line with the “actual” price. But even so, it’s impossible to fully corner the market on anything, as you are not the sole supplier.

For flipping items no, for manipulating the market, yes. They are not the same thing although some see it as the same. One of them makes a profit off of people’s impatience. The other makes the overall price go up to turn a profit. One stabilizes, while the other creates artificial demand and restricts supply.

Main problem when people discuss this, and other things, is the words and definitions used. But Anet makes the decision so what they say matters. Intentionally manipulating the market can result in a ban. They know who sells what, and how many, and they do monitor it.

edit: Also, as is stated above, it is difficult to ‘corner the market’ on most items because of the large amount of supply that players have, that you don’t even see because it isn’t on the trading post until those players see it as worth selling. But some items are so low in supply that this can be done on a short-term basis.

I can control the price on market of small quantity goods. For me it is not important if product is not going to sell, because i love to control the market.

I can buy 7 Enameled Anamnesis Dye and put their price from 230 to 400 gold.
And someone who wish to be collector will buy it after waiting for prices to drop, which will never happen because someone will control the market… Can I get a ban for doing that ?

How can they detect me?
Are people reporting players for doing that ?
Did anyone notice any manipulation on the market ?

no, they can log everything, even whispers (and did in gw1…)

Devs have shown pictures to show that certain markets weren’t manipulated at that time, just regular supply/demand. You would be naive to think they don’t know and won’t act.

Also, manipulating the market makes you about as hated as bots by many players…

You can set the sell price at whatever you want, but it will only sell to the highest buy price regardless of what you set it at. So if you set the price to 400g no one will buy it at 400g, but will place a buy order for much much lower, say around 230g. So even if you were able to have all the enameled dyes, and no one else could ever get them, you won’t be able to sell it at 400g unless people were willing to buy it at that.

Take Ambirite Sheets. The first one made was listed on the TP at 300g or something. I made one, and tried to sell it. It only sold for ~80s or something because that was the highest buy order.

So again you can only sell something for whatever price someone is willing to pay for it. Listing an item at 400g doesn’t mean it will sell for 400g.

Now hordering items so no one else can get them is impossible, as there is always a source of supply. Unless the collector in question has more money than brains, and is impatient/doesn’t care. But there will be others who can, and will, supply the very same thing.

Because you are using a system that they set up which logs every single transaction so it can be undone/rolled back in case of the TP glitching out? The TP may be anonymous to players, as to who is selling and buying, but not to ANet.
