Can you use a gem card with the free version?

Q:

A friend wants to use a gem card, but neither of us know if it works on free account. Does anyone know if it does?

Free account can buy gem so I think it should work. Not 100% sure though.

I can’t see any reason it wouldn’t work and given the extensive list of limitations we were told about I’m certain Anet would have said if it wasn’t possible to use a gem card.

Free accounts are basically shareware, they’ve made paying optional but ideally still want free players to give them money, so it wouldn’t make any sense to block one of the main ways of doing that.

For $18 on Amazon you could get a full (non-HOT) version of the game and apply that code to your ftp account. Seems a better use of cash, at least to me.
