I’m writing this post because unfortunately I have arrived to the point that because of inventory management I no longer enjoy playing the game. My inventory gets constantly full, and I don’t have the will nor the time to manage it. There are too many types of items in the game, and I don’t know which one is valuable, which one is useful and which one is not. I don’t have time to research it, I just want to have fun, but the game force me to either delete or sell stuff that could be potentially useful/valuable in the future, or just not to play the game. I’m tired of spending time moving items to alt characters, so most of the times I just don’t bother playing. I don’t want to spend money to buy gems to upgrade the bank or things like that. I’m a casual player and I just want to play the game when I want without having to manage anything.

Do two achievements to get free 20 slot bags, buy the other 20 slots bags. Halloween pail costs less than 10g I think.
Use deposit materials button.
Right click item → sell on tp to see what it’s worth.
There are very few items that aren’t materials and aren’t tradeable. If you really can’t figure out if an untradeable item is valuable just bank it. Highly unlikely that you can’t tell how valuable an item is though.
Buy gems with gold to buy a bag slot.

If you want to have more space, you will have to upgrade. It takes about 80 gold (exchanged for gems) for a bank tab (account) and 40 for a bag slot (character).

When you find your inventory is filling, do the following: salvage green and blue items using a Basic Salvage Kit. This boosts your luck and gives you materials. Sell the materials you get on the TP by clicking on the TP icon, selecting sell, clicking on an item. List the item for 1 copper less that the current “sell” price if there is a more than 20 copper spread between buy and sell prices. Otherwise sell at the current “buy” price.

Keep doing so and accumulate gold. Convert the gold to gems using the second tab (on the left of the Trading Post UI). If interested in doing so, monitor the prices and do so when the rate is lower. Buy bank or bag slots when you have enough gems.

MMO’s are a marathon, not a sprint. MMO’s design systems that require players to take time to get what they want. Realize you will get more space eventually, but that it will take time. If you want everything now, you would be better off with a game other than an MMO.

Most tasks are easier if you can break them down into steps. I’ve given you some steps to you to fix your issue. Good luck, and I hope the advice works for you.

Buy gems with gold to buy a bag slot.

Pails are less than 9g with buy orders.

Much easier to figure out if it is valuable. Press O, click on trading post, click on sell items, sort by price.

I already salvage all blues and greens and sell materials but it’s boring! TP is so slow to load, I’m tired of listing materials on it… plus, my inventory is now full of yellows and exotics.. what to do with them? why do we need to do all this for a game?’

GW2 has some of the best QoL, inventory management mechanics I have ever encountered in an mmo. The game also generates a lot of items, recipes change, and new recipes are continuously introduced; all for the most part good for most players and the game. However, unless you commit to the effort of moving items to storage characters, invest in bank tabs, have a personal guild bank, you will need to get rid of stuff and you will need to do some research but only to find out what you need.
If you don’t want ascended gear don’t save the account bound ascended materials.
If you don’t need exotic armor sets, salvage until you have full tabs of basic materials then sell the rest.

Maximize your bag space then develop an inventory routine. Your routine won’t necessarily be the most efficient at discovering profit, but who cares. It would be a shame to let having too much stuff get in the way of having fun.

edit: For rares I salvage all of them that have buy orders less than the buy orders for ectos. as to why all the stuffs…This game gives you stuff you may not need but someone else does, sell it to them.

If you don’t care to invest the time in selling your items or salvaging them (Rares and Exotics), or even throwing them in the MF, just delete them. If they aren’t worth looking up to see what their worth is, salvaging, or forging, they aren’t worth keeping, no?

I’m afraid there is no less-time-investment tools in-game to notify you of what might be valuable to you.

Good luck.

solution = Salvaging Kit

I too suffer from pack rat syndrome… but junk is junk…

if it’s white, blue, green or yellow it’s generally not worth keeping unless its better than what you have.

Trophies are quest chain items, you might have to wiki them, or alternatively just throw them out (they generally can be gotten again) and if you don’t know what they’re for… ignorance is bliss….

Food is meant to be eaten, Buffs are meant to be used.

If you’re full of mats, then sell a stack of mats and get more. (click the gear to deposit to bank… )

Turn mats into gold and then gold into gems and then gems into more characters…(or gem stores item, bags slots or other gem store items)

If it’s Bloodstone, or Dragonite ore, then consider refining them or getting Ascended materials converters like Mawdrey, Princess and the Star of Gratitude.

Salvage everything you can then send it off to your material collections. Then periodically, as it suits you take them out and sell in bulk. Doing that will give you the same amount of gold but takes far less time.

I usually go in and sell bulk items from the materials collections tab about twice a month or so, maybe once a month if the items are cheap.

Be careful what you ask for
ANet may give it to you.

One of them is the Bandit Weapon Specialist collection. Buy the Bandit Combat Journal in The Silverwastes, take a low-level character into WvW and buy any skins you are missing from the Karma trader, then get the aquatic weapons by crafting or from the Trading Post (make sure to unlock those skins, they won’t unlock on acquire like the karma weapons).

Not sure what the second achievement is. edit: Oh right, Uncanny Canner. That’s not a difficult collection. It’ll cost you some karma and ~1g.

There are also 20 slot bags available from the vendors in Fractals of the Mists if you’d prefer to spend Fractal Relics than gold; however, they are also sorting bags for Uncommon, Rare, and Exotic equipment.

Every game requires more time spent managing inventory than I would prefer. It’s just a fact of games that have loot divided into rare (i.e. exciting) drops and common (i.e. boring) ones. Nearly every player struggles with this, so you’re not alone.

Most of the time, it’s not a space issue, it’s a management issue — you really have to be willing to weed out a garden to grow stuff you want; you equally have to be willing to spend some fraction of your valuable time dealing with loot in order to maximize your time playing.

There are lots of different strategies for doing this and as it turns out, ANet offers a lot of tools to help.

Based on your post, my strong recommendation to you would be the following:

  • Invest in either a copper-fed salvage kit for infinite uses or make up 250-use mystic salvage kits (a compromise in convenience: cheaper than copper-fed in the short run and costlier than 25-use basic kits that take up space).
  • Invest in 18-20 slot bags, either by purchasing candy corn and buying them or by doing the relevant achievements.

This alone is sufficient to make sure you don’t run out of space as long as you are willing to salvage greens and below as you go. If a vendor is nearby, sell cheap upgrades otherwise delete them (they aren’t worth the time it takes to sell on the tp in my opinion).

You won’t be 100% efficient in terms of growing your wealth, but you will end up finding you have a lot more time playing.

tl;dr everyone in every game with loot has to spend some time managing inventory. Those unwilling to spend time or money upfront will end up spending both time & money while they play and the choice is yours.

If you aren’t interested in the gold from selling stuff, why even pick it up? That would solve your problem. If you want the gold, then do what people in the thread suggested. It’s kind of a binary issue. Pick up loot — manage loot somehow. Don’t want to manage loot — don’t pick it up.

18 slot bags are a much better value, IMO. Though you do sacrifice 2 slots per bag, they’re about one-quarter the price.

You can easily sell most stuff that you don’t want to salvage. Though you may lose money, it seems that you want less busy work. I can sympathize. Low values runes and sigils that you can’t sell on the TP are generally below 19 copper each. If your guild has a guild hall, you can pop in there(G screen, click on the “enter guild hall” button in the upper right) and sell them to the merchant, then pop right back to where you were.(same button) In our guild hall, the merchant is very close to where you enter the guild hall. I don’t know if this is standard.

Agreed with the above, mystic salvage kits are a good value, as is the copper fed salvage kit.

I was in your shoes at one point and still somewhat am. That’s the reason why I have about 1000 bags unopened and I usually wait until my inventory gets full of bags before I open/savlage on the character. I’d rather just play the game like you and find savlaging, ect, tedious.

I used to not buy bank slots thinking it’s a waste of money, now I have 5 bank slots and has made life much easier, worth every penny. This is from converting gold to gem so I just play the game and upgrade.

I’ve spent real money but not on bank slots. So the solution for you is to spend some of the gold you make to make life easier for you. Kinda like walking and having a car, if you can afford it, it’ll make your life easier, do it.

The loot sure does come quickly in Heart of Thorns. After every Meta event completion I find myself spending anywhere from 5-15 minutes salvaging the piles of stuff the game gives me. Then I have to open piles of champ bags which gives me more piles of stuff I need to salvage. Then I open those little chest cache things and they give me more champ bags which in turn give me more loot I need to salvage…again. Then I have to visit the TP to sell valuable items and then stop by the bank to clear any stuff I want to keep. I use WvW for quick access to the TP and Bank.

It’s a tedious process but the only alternative is to just not get loot. I’d rather have the loot!

Yeah, I’m currently levelling a third character the old fashioned way, for fun and it is a bit of a struggle without the extra bag slots, even though I have 18 slot bags (which provide the most bang [or bag] for your buck).

I don’t want to buy yet more bag slots.

I mainly do WvW/EotM and I’ve already spent a lot on the game, in real money and far prefer to save up/splash out some real cash for cosmetic rewards; not boring old bag slots.

If everyone was like me and spent on inconsequential fluff, they wouldn’t even need to charge for mundane (but very helpful) things, like extra bag slots.

So, I do find I resent being expected to do it somewhat.

Especially for every character.

Yellows are basically all safe to salvage. Buy two master’s salvage kits (the yellow one) and use them to salvage all rares you get. You will often get sigils and runes from rares. You can sell those on the tp or combine 4 sigils/runes in the mystic forge for a chance at something good.

Exotics are rare enough that you can check their tp price individually. I salvage maybe 80% of them with a master’s salvage kit. Some of them will have a good sigil/rune inside (their tp price will reflect that), I use a black lion salvage kit on those (get the kits for free from daily rewards).

I agree that HoT maps drop way too many of those stupid bags. It’s not efficient to open them as soon as you get them, I just let them stack up for a long time.

SOme exotics aren’t worth the trip to the TP to pick up the gold.

On the other hand they are affected by MF so you can stack them up then pile on your MF buffs before opening them.

If you want to maximize gold gain:

  • Salvage rares with master salvage kit if their TP price is less than the price of an ecto (~33s)
  • Salvage exotics if they’re less than around 1 gold (master salvage kit)
  • TP other exotics
  • Salvage exotics with valuable runes / sigils (Force, Strength, Air, etc.)

If you want to just get rid of stuff:

  • Salvage rares
  • Salvage exotics if they’re less than around 1 gold
  • TP other exotics

Being pretty casually minded myself, i have had the same issue. Altho i have no bones about buying space with gems, one tip i found was to buy bags from the fractal vendor.

My main issue is that i am a hoarder, but that isnt really a problem i can blame on the game lol
