Q:
Centaur Clans?
Centaurs can’t swim and therefore won’t be able to fight DSD. Don’t think they’ll ever be a playable race because of that. I don’t think we’ll ever see new playable races in GW2 at all but if I were to guess the most likely candidate, it’d be the Largos.
Just to note, over the last year we actually have discovered a new non-hostile group of centaurs, so that takes care of that part of your question.
Theoretically, centaurs could be a new race somewhere down the line. It’s probably not as likely as the Tengu, given that the centaurs are a strong racial enemy of humans and the major adversary in several zones, whereas the Tengu have a sectioned off part of the map that serves as their homeland and are not actual enemies in any zone, as far as I’m aware (there’s the one hero challenge…).
It would be a big hassle to rework armour for centaurs, though, just because their gear would be very different. Tengu, on the other hand, have the same model/build as Charr, if you look closely, so while there’s definitely be some differences in their armour it wouldn’t be nearly the same overhaul needed.
For some more background, in the original Guild Wars game (which had Heroes, NPCs who you could recruit and customize as you progressed the story), there was a single centaur Hero to obtain, Zhed Shadowhoof. Unsurprisingly, he was xenophobic and abrasive, but he was a Hero no less. As with most GW1 Heroes, his equipment is available in GW2 as level 80 exotics, which always makes me wonder how exactly a GW2 character can properly wear “Zhed’s Boots” or “Zhed’s Leggings”. I mean, shouldn’t they actually be called “Zhed’s Shoes”?
Scritt have dibs on being next.
Skritt would be pretty cute..but their intelligence varies based on proximity to other skritt (from my understanding)? That would put a hitch in building a storyline for them from a lore standpoint?
I’ve not run into the Largos yet in game! They look exciting!
During the development of Guild Wars 2, Jeff Grubb had said that centaurs were going to be one of the ‘black races’ – meaning that they would be always the villain, never the playable. The krait were another such race. Of course, Season 2 changed this with the return of the Maguuma centaurs that follow Ventari’s teachings, but they seem to be extremely low in number. The only other centaurs that weren’t hostile to humans were the Veldrunners of Elona. But they were likely wiped out/subjugated by Palawa Joko.
Besides, the armor designs for centaurs to fit with the bipedal races would be horrendous. Charr already look terrible.
Reason why as much as I’d love naga to make a return as a playable race, I highly doubt they will… and if they will, I highly doubt their armor would look any good.
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.
Thanks for all the answers! Once I got thinking about it I really couldn’t picture some of the outfits on a centaur. Dwayna’s Regalia and the new Monk’s Outfit particularly gave some silly mental images.
Oh! and I ran into a Largos. Wouldn’t those winglike appendages give issue with some of the backpack and wing accessories?
As far as the bipedal species go, Tengu would be incredible…and the skritt would be cool too, if they could get around the lore bits.
My only disappointment would be that I’ve always been partial to playing characters with good posture…the hunched posture the Charr have bugs me when it comes to gear visibility. I’m fairly certain I’d enjoy seeing Tengu and Skritt in game…but I’d be unlikely to play one due to that quirk of mine.
