Centaur and Horses
>_> Are they conveniently gone in game so we wouldn’t ask about mounts?
Except people would still ask for mounts outright or disguised in threads regardless as to whether there were horses in Tyria or not.

Fixed that for you
The centaur murdered them as they were weak, now they seek to do the same to humans.
That’s right i just retconned lore. Get mad.
But seriously I am curious! It’s silly but it’s one of those things that just bugs me! Did some wrathful horse god smote them all and was like “Centaur are my favorite now!”
This has been speculated on before. It also raises other issues, to do with power, like if Humans had had horses, the Charr would have been crushed when they attacked – and not what happened in the story. Human armies with access to large amounts of heavy, plated cavalry would have rolled over the top of the Charr legions – or any one else for that matter.
Not having horses, but many references to horses all over the place, immediately raises the question: Where are all the horses? Even if you don’t need them for transport, their military application is undeniable, and would be a huge advantage.
This is becoming a mounts thread in 3, 2, 1…

I think the Centaurs must have been artificially created. But then, given their are so few horses in the world, why choose the other half to be horse? It’s odd.
mounts confirmed.
There’s no more horses.
Charr ate all of them.
The closest thing we can see in both games is some corpses.

That if any survived after the Chosen heroes wiped most if not all skeletal undead.
The closest thing left alive are kirin.

Which may look a bit like horses, but are closer to dragons than horses.

Heavy cavalry would suck in the Guild Wars world. Light cavalry on the other hand…
I am off the view that the Centaur wiped them out. It is something they would totally do, to deny humans their use.
There were horses. What do you think what centaurs evolved from?
Natural selection. All horses clearly need 4 hooves to function, otherwise they are crippled. When the poor crippled centaurs are killed they only drop a couple of hooves at best. Sometimes only 1. Since centaurs and horses are similar, we can assume that the these degenerate hoof-less centaurs evolved from horses. But centaurs got hands to somewhat compensate for disabilities, whereas horses do not.
Meaning, horses died out because they had no hooves.
Good question… There’s another thing that always bugs me: wheel ruts. There are various places where there are fresh wheel ruts in the road, but never a cart in the area, only Dolyak caravans. And the only moving carts in the game are floating….

Wheeled carts would have been used before the dirty asura came along, I guess.
After talking with guildies, the popular theories are:
-Some evolved into Centaurs while the rest slowly died out.
-They slowly died out and were hunted by other creatures but Humans still remember them.
-They all got fat and turned into Dolyaks.
The norn don’t acknowledge them in any way (they even worship several lesser animals like the ox, owl, wolverine, etc. in addition to the bigger ones)
They always seem to be referenced in human culture…
In Guild Wars 1…
There is a Celestial Horse
Iron Horse Mines
Guild emblems
Necrid Horsemen, etc.
Yet they are never seen in game.
save the necrid horseman…. which clearly is not anatomically a horse…. but more of a “horror” or undead minion in the shape of a horse.
To me it just seems like they may have existed as part of human culture a long time ago…… but people at anet continue to forget their own lore…. and stuff like this happens:

I’m more-so wondering what happened to the Gorillas. There’s only Risen ones~ did Zhaitan murder all of them?
And What happened to Snakes?
Seems like all the gorillas lived in the Orr area, so died to the various catastrophes.
My theory is that there was some sort of equine plague that either outright killed the horses and their near relatives or rendered the remaining ones unable to reproduce. A species sith no offspring disappers in a generation.
I was really hoping GW2 was going to be the first MMO to have centaurs as a playable race, but unless it happens within the next year or so, that honor is going to go to Crowfall, which I unfortunately won’t be playing (even though it looks awesome), because it’s going to run on the same scam of a monetary system as Wildstar.
The Charr ate them all.
There’s nothing like a plate of fresh horse meat after other appetites have been satisfied.
ANet may give it to you.
And lions. Hope there are lions in Maguuma.
Maybe some animals died out because of a virus?

is that a scam that basically consists of paying money for the use of software services? Yeah, diabolical…

Yeah, you should really know what you are talking about before you open your mouth…
Wildstar (and soon to be Crowfall) are not ‘pay for use’ services; they are not pay to play, buy to play, free to play, or even ‘pay’ in any way. They are a system where you can purchase play time from other players, or sell play time for in game rewards. A system that monetarily rewards the game company for making the game as unrewarding as possible, and encourages real life leeching between players. If you don’t recognize that as a scam, I’ve got some prime beachfront property in Arizona I think you’d be interested in.

There’s lions in Elona.
The Cat tonic can turn you into a female lion too.

The closest thing alive among both games is tusked apes in Elona.

They are kind of like a cross of gorillas and mandrills on steroids.
There were horses. What do you think what centaurs evolved from?
Those crafty Krytans and their “selective breeding” projects.
What if horses are a mythical creature in Tyria? Kind of like how centaurs are for us.
Centaur are created by the unnatural mating of Man and Horse. (insert your own joke about Scotsman and sheep)
To suggest centaurs evolved from horses is absurd. It’s rather difficult to imagine they evolved at all, as there is no evolutionary precedent for such an arbitrary combination of features from two very disparate species. However, there is evidence of different species of centaur, as the Elonian centaur has distinctly different features than the Tyrian mainland variant, suggesting that they did evolve naturally over a long period. I think the closest-to-logical answer to their origin is that centaurs share a distant mutual ancestor with horses.
As for why there are no observable horses in Tyria, I believe this is obvious: the horses must have fallen under the control of some equine elder dragon, and are, as we speak, mustering their forces for an intricately-planned assault on civilization! Ready yourselves, Tyrians, for the biggest threat to this world comes not in the form of twisting vines, but with the thundering sound of a million hooves cascading over the hills and mountains in sweeping unison, ravaging the countryside in a blazing fury, and carrying the world to a swift, majestic doom!

Nah. There’s corpse skeletons in swamps. And undead enemies used to ride them. And there’s pictures of horses.
They existed.
It’s just that charr ate them all.
They’ve all been called back by the Horse Dragon to prepare for world domination.
We’ll have to fight them in one of the upcoming expansions.

Shadowbane was the first mmo with centaurs as a playable race back in 2003. I’m surprised no one else remembers the game.

Umm this is a popular system that is done by lots of games not just Wildstar. EVE does it. So does Rift and Archage. In fact WoW just announced that they are implementing a system like this soon.
I don’t see how it’s a scam to be able to buy game time with in game gold, but that’s for another thread. One not about horses.
Well everyone seems to agree that all the horses were eaten by the Charr.

oh, I know that system from wildstar and also Eve. In which way is the game made “unrewarding” because of this? People invested in the game can earn their sub with this. Where is there leeching? Are you just a bad player being envious because you are not able to gather that kind of ressources? chances are, you wouldn´t be a good enough conman to sell me any property if you even fail at computer games.
Also, I open my mouth whenever I like to – not to mention I knew the topic apparently – some whiny casual is certainly not in a position to prevent that. Will I get an infraction from mods now and be shut up? Possibly. Would I really care? Nah.

Not all creatures are represented in the game world, it’s as simple as that, and that’s how it was explained by A.net.

You’ve never seen a duck-billed platypus? That creature is real and has parts of multiple other animals.
Anyway, Horses in our world are from ASIA, if they hadn’t been brought to other continents, they’d be myth to most people. We have only explored a very very tiny part of Tyria, perhaps one day we’ll explore the region that horses originate from – you know, when they announce mounts

Anyway, Horses in our world are from ASIA[…]
The ancestors of horses where found mostly in Europe and western Asia.
There’s prehistoric depictions of horses in several caves in Spain.
Well I was close, there’s nothing separating europe from asia anyway. But valid point is that if the other 4 continents (excluding antarctica) never received them, we’d only see them in stories and references.
I am off the view that the Centaur wiped them out. It is something they would totally do, to deny humans their use.
probably vengeful humans killed them off as centaur spies :l
