If you can freely walk through them whats the point lol? Did esteemed Anet devs saw real world stakes that were placed in tight rows impossible to jump on horse or climb over? I will safely guess not.

Actually the stakes were not to stop a single opponent but a large force… You have to imagine you are running at those stakes with 1000’s of other attackers, then they channel and slow enemies. Stakes have been a basic defense system for thousands of years, Anet did not reinvent the wheel…

also when you when you are charging with your fellow cavalryman/knights those simple stakes on the gound can kill a lot of your fellow soldier…same can be said towards charging footman, thou the effect is more prevelent on fast numerous raiders.
