Champion loot still a mess.
Anet wants to get people out into the world…which is why world chests give decent loot. You’re only guaranteed one gold a day from them, but a lot of people go for them anyway. Many, when in the area do other events, kill stuff, and help fill zones.
As far as I know, Champions are programmed to drop blue or higher. Annoying, I’m sure, but as far as I know that’s working as intended. You should have a higher chance of getting a better drop from a champ, but there’s still a chance to get blues.
What about veterans? I’ve killed many that had no loot at all. Are they supposed to have at least something, or is it a % chance that they carry something?

I don’t think vets have guaranteed drops. Many, however, are pretty easy to kill in any case.

They’re not particularly difficult most of the time, but it is strange that the trash mobs around them will drop at least vendor trash (sometimes blues or greens) and the Vet gives nada. Makes my wonder “why bother?” except for the fight.

It’s an increased chance that’s all. It’s a loot table, not guaranteed loot.
It’s sorta like any kind of gambling. There are games that pay off more, but you have to invest more cash to play them. There’s still no guarantee of winning.
The bottom line is if they make something so that every time you kill a champion you get a gold, that’s all anyone would do, and the content would be rendered pointless because there’d be no challenge with a million people doing it.
Hmm.
" content would be rendered pointless because there’d be no challenge with a million people doing it."
Kind of like Meta Events? I get that you feel compelled to support anything and everything Anet does, Vayne, but honestly… this statement made me spew coffee.

It is kind of like meta events. I agree, those are pointless. Anet originally had them so they weren’t so rewarding and less people did them. I liked them better then.
Actually, I can list several things Anet does that I don’t like, including the RNG in Black Lion Chests for the new skins, which I’ve said in other threads is a bad look. Including the choice of making the last part of the personal story multiplayer out of the blue, including the dungeons in general, which I don’t enjoy at all.
However, that doesn’t mean I don’t agree with other decisions. Perhaps you’re confusing me with someone who only has positive opinions. In the case of loot, I think that making it so that everyone just goes to one thing for max loot sucks for the game in general. I think making everything give good loot which just inflate prices, which is bad for the game.
Just because someone agrees with specific points that you can’t see, doesn’t mean they agree with everything the company does. On the other hand, I’m pretty sure they know more about game design than most players.
I’m inclined to agree. It really does seem that champs have about a 95% chance to drop a blue, 4% chance at green, .9999% chance at rare and .0001% exo chance.
While I agree that if they made it too rewarding everyone would do it….what we have now is that players avoid them b/c they are too unrewarding.
Idk to me it seems obvious that it needs to be balanced better.
Giving everything good loot would not inflate prices, it would drive prices down. A greater supply of any item drives the price down, not up.
So, here’s what they can do 1. Don’t concentrate loot into easily farmed events 2. Make reward= effort involved 3. Give champions and veterans drops (these don’t need to be rares, can be multiple loot bags, multiple crafting components) 4. Remove the farming of open world events by attaching meaningful and challenging meta event chains to world boss spawns that encompass the entire map (instead of one small area) This is what Anet could do.

Even if Champs all had a 100% chance to drop at least a green item, would it be fun hunting them? I think not. It would be less of a waste of time, but not more.
IMO Champs (and other special mobs) should drop something that regular mobs can’t drop, THAT would make them more interesting to kill. It was always exciting to me finding Named Monsters (NMs) in Final Fantasy XI, because they had a unique loot table. GW2 could use some of this non-genericness (yeah Chrome doesn’t think this is a word either, but YOLO man!)

If everyone has money then prices go up because people can charge more. That’s exactly what inflation is. In games with money is given freely stuff costs more. In other words, the value of your currency goes down.
You don’t have to believe it but it’s what ends up happening.

If the supply of items stayed constant and everyone just had more money, then I would agree with that statement. But there are various money sinks in the game to combat this problem, with everything from buying bank slots, to flushing it down the Mystic Forge there are plenty of ways to decrease gold in game. What there isn’t is a way to increase the amount of items available in the TP itself. While the economy stays the way it is, only people who have gamed the system early will profit from the TP. By allowing greater amounts of material into the world, and allowing a greater number of people to buy and sell on the TP, the economy would strengthen.
karkas are the best example why bother killing Vet karkas when the young ones are the ones that often drop loot and drop karka shells as well and you can kill the young ones in under 3 seconds.
Would be nice if they assigned champions their own special mat loot bags. Each champ can have a chance of dropping these bags ,and they can give between 3-5 mats upon opening.
Might not make people swarm champions, but at least peeps would have a chance to get a little something extra upon killing them.

This is a pretty good idea. I like it.
I agree. Bags will be a good idea. The champions in queensdale drops those 5slot colored bags and i collected them all. ( btw instead of the purple bag they should have used violet and indigo.)

Yes. Doesn’t have to be rares. Something besides a level 76 blue I can get ganking common mobs in a noob zone.
I don’t understand why they don’t recycle the Unique item concept from Guild Wars 1, where almost every “Boss” had a chance to drop a maximum level, fixed stat item named after them. Hell, half the time, you’d even see said boss using that item in combat before killing them.
Therefore I may take some time replying to you.

And by providing players with more things to camp for because other mobs don’t drop them… just means that the event treadmill gets expanded a little more, more people guest in to kill the champ and zone off to the next server to get the same champ drop.. that does not fix the game it merely changes the concept of Open World even more.. no need for any further content just another guarantee of loot in an event to que up for.
Nothing in a loot table should be guaranteed, its makes for a very shortlived experience… but at the same time loot tables should be adjusted to incorporate better items for sure, but should fall under RNG like anything else… maybe adjusting the percentages a little so that there is more likelihood of getting loot of green or better standard to chuck in the Mystic Toilet… but there should still be a chance to get lower loot or, as someone else said at the very least a double baggy or something similar with your blue drops.
RNG is the best way to keep the game looking a little more individual.. otherwise everyone will all be running round with the same outfits, the same weapons, the same everything in no time and it keeps players playing longer… what would you do if you could watch your event timers and circle the champ trains… get your bestest loot all in a few days… there would be little point in playing the game out across the whole of the maps/zones anymore even with alts.. so you leave and wait till the next things lands in the content bag.. rinse repeat again and again but each you come back your time in game gets less, you spend less if any in the shop.. the game begins to enter maintenance mode sooner than you think.
RNG has its place… but it needs better balancing and difficulty scaling nothing more and that is something that I would bet is done constantly as the data gets de-cyphered internally.
I personally hate the guarantee of loot from world event chests … if they want that kind of loot philosophy in game then they should at least randomise the event times and spawn points across the entire game so that players are forced to go do something else and the event becomes more of a surprise chance if your there… great opportunity to get their event scaling primed as well based on numbers in the area.

Anet specifically stated they didn’t want to do this. That that wanted people to be able to play “anywhere”, though they still did it with at least a couple of the items that drop from meta events, including the Final Rest staff that drops from the Shadow Behemoth event.
And before the peanut gallery asks, I’m not gong to go look for the quote. I don’t care if you believe it but one of the Anet devs did say it.
All I know, at least champions are dropping something compared to pre-november content. They changed the drop rate of champions to drop blues-exotics 100% of the time, only time you won’t get a drop from them is if you didn’t do enough damage(less then 10k damage). As to vets, they have a better chance of dropping items, I’ve gotten more exotics from champs/vets then trashmob, and the only exotic i got from a trashmob was from a Risen Putrifier(level 81).

The fact that you got an exotic from it, shows that the term trash-mob probably doesn’t even belong in the game. I spent 5 years in Guild Wars 1 and hardly ever heard the term at all.
Calling things trash mobs sort of belittles them. One of my guildies got dusk off a trash mob, or what would be called a trash mob in other games.
It amazes me how many people run through so-called trash in the dungeons, instead of killing them for loot.
Even stuff like the Jade Maw fractal, where I’ve gotten some great drops (including powerful venom sacs) just spending an extra two or three minutes killing to get to the boss.

And that is the thing, I normally don’t call them trashmobs, because I find it worthwhile to kill them all because, a chance is a chance but I say it for the sake of other people who call them “trashmobs” because that is what they are well known of.

I get this completely. I understand why people do it. But in my mind, language forms the building blocks of perception. By using a term people use in other games, people can forget this isn’t other games, and so-called trash-mobs can be worth killing. Only reason I point it out, is because I think over time, if people stop using it, people will learn to think differently.
I realize it’s a long slow process, though.
I like the idea of champ grab-bags. Loot specific to the champ and area would be great. I have also killed champs and the surrounding mobs and gotten green from the random mob that is in the area and blue from the champ. Time spent killing the champ is better invested in killing 10 area mobs. The vet mobs on southsun are a completely messed up loot mechanic. harder than the majority of champ mobs in game and they have the same drop chance of other vets, meaning you are as likely to get nothing as something and then chances are high of just getting white level 76 gear.
A “trashmob” is a mob that takes no special skill or planning to kill or deal with, in addition to the loot parameters. The term is meant to imply that bosses and sub bosses are actually the meat of any dungeon encounter, and indeed they are. There are plenty of items that drop of “trashmobs” in other mmos (recipes, gear, currencies), the strict idea of them not having something useful is something I haven’t encountered much of till I started playing here, which is prolly cause of the way the loot system works.

Yes, this is what Colin Johansen said when he posted his “loot update” on 2/18, here:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Update-on-Loot-Drops-Investigation
The problem with this, in my view, though, is that it’s a boring, uninspired, unimaginative way to handle loot. A guaranteed blue? Really? That doesn’t make a champ very enticing to fight. A chance at a unique weapon skin — even a small chance — does make a champ very enticing to fight. If champ mobs had a slight chance to drop something really cool, that could not be found anywhere else but from killing a champ mob, people would not avoid them the way they do now.
Ideas for unique champ mob drops? Weapon/armor skins, mini-pets, town clothes, musical instruments, everlasting tonics, novelty mounts (with no speed boost), or — gasp — a named exotic item that can’t be found anywhere else. And that’s just a few ideas.
And to prevent champ mob farming? Make them spawn randomly.
