Q:
We are getting kind of full on the US side ^^;
Also have they ever said what the cap for servers is? I know they mentioned per map etc, and I think each server reaches full once a limit ikitten for account numbers.
“Many thousands” is all I could find. So if “many” is, lets say a small guess of 2000 accounts per server that would mean:
20 servers @ 1000+ accounts.
4 Servers @ 2000+ accounts. (Just guessing on both these I have no idea.)
So we have a minimum of 28,000 players if my imaginary numbers were correct. Which sort of doesn’t make sense because if we had 3m accounts.. no way servers would be able to allow more to join at launch. They also recently raised the amount, so that makes it even harder for me to guess.. So I’ll make a wild and crazy guess that the cap is 125,000 accounts per. Which would mean if the full servers are 500,000 total and the very full are maybe at around 80,000 each (1,600,000) then we would have 2,100,000 accounts in game right now(US). Which seems possible.. But again, made up numbers so I really can’t seem to make an educated guess and my brain hurts..
Instead of another ubiquitous server increase for accounts, they need to move the account storage to a mirror server and only have servers for actual players. It will have to be done eventually anyway, how many years are they going to let dead accounts sit on those servers when actual players could be using that space?
Edit: And perhaps also take a look at server architecture and the game engine allowing more players per zone.

Those need to reflect actual server sizes, my server “Northern Shiverpeaks” is a ghost town at all times and even in big events I often don’t see enough people to complete them. “Very High” my kitten ….

I agree NSP does seem emptier than others for a server that states “Very High”. Would be nice if it was based on active users rather than accounts. But then they would need more metrics for generating reports on activity. On the other hand that would give them the chance to announce what the active player base was if they wanted.

A month out from launch they had 2 million in sales with 51 servers. So that’s ~40k people per server. They’ve increased capacity multiple times since then and had at least 1 more million in sales, not sure what server capacity is now.

I completely agree. I think those numbers are made up so new players believe they’re playing an ultra popular game. My server says “Very High” all the time, yet I see maybe 3 players when I roam around the world for 3 hours. 10 players if I visit LA. Apparently nobody hangs out in the minor cities, because I didn’t see a single person in The Grove, Divinity’s Reach, or Rata Sum. Anyway, back to the topic, yeah this game isn’t getting a server increase. If anything it needs a decrease. When’s the last time you saw a player when you roamed around the maps?

Pfft all the time! In fact, Southsun Cove (the latest content patch) is in a constant state of overflow. Multiple overflows.

Lol before TC went back into full state, I was in 9 overflows back to back :P Was like the twilight zone.
I would like them to increase the zone sizes, I’m sick of waiting 2 hours to enter southsun on my server.
On everquest, there are no player limit to any zones. Guild lobby has 400+ players and that zone is extremely tiny.

I mean have you seen players in places other than the places that Anet funnels players into? Players don’t really decide where they go, Anet does. Try going to any other map and you won’t see more than 1 person. Because of what Anet is doing (Funneling players into maps for achievements or rewards), they’re essentially screwing over the rest of the world. Think about your comment for a second. Of course if Anet packs multiple events into one place, all of the players will flock there almost instantaneously. That obviously does not count.
Oh I forgot, yes the server size is a joke. I remember awhile back like 4 months ago, there use to be things called dynamic events. I went to lone post yesterday on JQ server which is full. nobody there. I goto jelako waypoint, nobody there either. I remembered when the champ abomination in cursed shores would go down immediately, hes been up for days. The only zone that has overflow is southsun cove, and the player capacity isn’t that big either. THATS THE ONLY ZONE. every other zone is empty or nothing going on.
JQ being full is some bullkitten, because it aint nowhere near full, and recently there isn’t anyone in wvw except in eb and sometimes jq bl but nowhere else.

That was just a statement about the overflow. I see this same population “bulge” in most cities, and even regular map areas on all the “full” servers. As far as very full servers some do seem busy in towns and in general map areas, and some seem less so. I’m aware event areas are not a way to judge population.

Same story in every MMO, even WoW with it’s 8.3 million players. Even on busy servers middle zones are dead and people have trouble finding groups for dungeons.
This isn’t an Anet problem is an MMO problem. You make a big world and people gravitate to where the action is. A lot of people play MMOs just to be around other people and where those people are that’s where they go. This snowballs.
If you read WoW forums you’ll see people complaining about people hanging out in cities waiting for queues to pop, instead of being in the open world.

Its based on accounts registered on JQ not activeness…lol
I’m on sea of sorrows and its crazy how many people turn up for world events, I didn’t realize at first how many there were due to culling but I started to move around and wait then another 30 new characters would appear, take a few more steps and another 30+.
Even when I’m out questing I am always bumping into 2-3 people at any one time. no matter where I am
I haven’t been able to see southsun on my server yet – always in the overflow.
‘very high’ I believe that.
I’d rather see them open up a new server or three than increase the size.
My server already has lag issues in many places from the crowds.
Remember the good old days when dumb mmo developers would rush to add servers when play increased. Like at the launch of an xpac or over a holiday, then be hosed with dead servers when that rush was over?

I don’t think so. According to some “commander”, NSP is a strong wvw server and I bet all of the population is in wvw. Or you can go orr and check if there is any botter making the server “very high”. IMO, NSP Lions Arch filled with tags all the time, 24/7.
I think population varies by server, i’m also on SoS and yes from where i’ve guested too SoS seems like it has a bit higher population than many, mostly because its the unofficial oceanic server, which means we go there or be out of our timezones with everyone, so it stands to reason SoS has a slightly higher pop than many others..
That said over the past few months i’ve seen a steady decrease in populations even on SoS no more overflows in months very dead areas like all the other servers, my guild went from 100 online a day to 30ish a day ect..
The only places ive seen any real activity is World events (where many are guests, weird non SoS guild tags) Southsun due to the new event and WvW, as i said SoS is a strong server but i’ve still seen decreases over last few months..
