Auto-targeting should not attack white and yellow mobs. It should only attack red mobs.
Please change auto-targeting.
Currently auto-targeting is made to attack the closest mob, which is stupid. Why would you want to attack yellow or white mob? Nobody wants that.
Please people save the white mobs by not auto-targeting innocent White and Yellow mobs!

I’m with you on this one. But, I suspect that some people do want it to attack white and yellow.

And the funny one is the skill retreat. It makes you attack if auto targeting is enabled. The logic here just kills me: retreat = attack.

Agree with this 10000%. Annoying as hell when you have to hit tab tab tab tab tab because your game decides that the deer and moose need to die instead of the enemy running through them.

Actually the thing needs a hierarchy of preference and a properly functional “target nearest”

Target nearest should actually mean nearest, not whats nearest in some portion of your screen, game has a distance measuring mechanic, USE IT.

And hostiles should ALWAYS gain target preference no matter what you are using…I agree, I can’t think of any reason someone would need to break target on a hostile and pwn a dear so bad… The only times I’ve ever had to go there is to get a cheap rally and I guarantee their auto target will never ever pick that deer for you in that situation.

So hostiles above all no matter what, if none then yellow, if none than ambients because them buggers are just about never auto-targetable.

I’ve never had targeting select an ambient… are there settings you need to adjust perhaps?

A second targeting mode that gave you cross hairs and allowed you to attack whatever direction you were facing would pretty much make this game AMAZING for me. =D

I think if they added the option to “Target nearest hostile” instead of just “target nearest” Would effectively fix this issue.

Next and nearest won’t, but hitting a skill while a ambient is closest to the screen center will if no other target is assigned.

Best way i can explain it is that the game has the vestigial parts of a action targeting system in there. If you do not have a target selected, whatever valid target that is nearest to center of screen, within 1200 range, and has valid LOS, will be attacked when a skill key is hit.

Not helping that if there is no such valid target within range, the character will fire his skill in whatever direction he is pointing rather than the camera. End result, you can end up aggroing something off camera that said attack happens to hit because what you intended to target was just outside of range (and your only indication of such is that small red bar below the skill icon).

The game right now is a miss mash of traditional MMORPG and action game design elements, with the end result that many players are fighting the UI as much as they are fighting the mobs. Others however se4ems to take it as a sign of “skill” that they can wrangle this UI mess, as if it validates their e-manhood…

Indeed, just make auto-targeting non-hostile mobs optional through a setting in the menu or something

Any plan that involves dead quaggans is, by design, foolproof. I’m an unmitigated genius!

Don’t forget that shift+tab goes backwards. I usually just tab spam until I get who I want, and if I miss him then a quick shift+tab puts me back where I need. Adds no more than 1-1.5 seconds before I’m ready to start shooting again.

It also seems to involve where your camera is facing, so I almost always point my camera right at who I want to target. Of course, I could be mistaken there and just pointlessly moving my camera… but meh, makes me feel better lol

I’ve never tabbed a white either, but I agree there should be some kind of priority on Tab to hostile/agroed mobs and to players that are damaging YOU. In most MMOs this happens automatically if you have nothing targeted and get hit.

I’m a majority keyboard user- I think it would take me, personally, longer to click the person and get my mouse back to where I want it than to just tab-spam to them lol.

This does exist but it’s hidden, clunky and generally not worth trying… if you auto fire a ranged weapon without a target, the game lines up the shot with your camera position and your character’s chest to make an old fashioned “iron sights” line up. Problem is that the camera has mobility issues with walls and ground and your view for such shots is limited further by any bushes and other such things the camera can move through but not look through

Yeah right. For some reason we can click friendlies even tho we have no friendly targeted skills to use. So once you have more than 2-3 entities milling about, selecting that one target you want, while keeping yourself out of harms way, ends up being a pixel hunt that will drive a adventure game fanatic to rampage.

Nope. It will fire in the direction of the character, unless you happen to have any kind of valid target within 1200 range, with valid LOS, and somewhat close to center of screen. At that point the shot will go done the screen center (or close to it). Outside of those conditions, the character will go pew pew in whatever direction he or she is facing.

Well, I do ok at it in WvW, probably just a matter of getting used to not relying solely on the auto-target features.

Every now and then I attack a yellow mob, but it’s not that big of a problem. But I’ve never had issues with attacking white mobs. But if there are issues with auto targeting yellow over red, then I guess it could use some tweaking (although not something I seem to recall).

Mmm I guess I can’t really add much to this conversation since, I guess there are some issues, but nothing that really troubles me.

Zerg blob or roamers? The latter seems to spread out more than your typical zerg or mob group.

I’ll go one step further on this topic, and say that they need to fix auto-targetting so it doesn’t target enemies under your location.

Given example: Anyone who has done the Melandru temple meta events will know what I’m talking about.

Standing on one of the ramps to get to the main platform where the Melandru Priest spawns is incredibly problematic. You can use your ‘target_next’ key and it will target something either under the platform you’re on or in the water. By the time you’ve realised something isn’t right with your target and you’re not hitting what you should be, you’re in a world of hurt. Manually clicking the correct target is tiresome, clunky and very tedious.

I shut off auto targeting about 2 weeks after launch. It’s in your options.

I would also suggest turning off double click dodging and using A and D to turn. Keyboard turning isn’t really a good idea.

Ah yes, i was wondering if ti should include a third option “staying on the edge of the fight and snipe”.

What i do if i end up at a zerg vs boss PVE event. But that is not because i want to, but because i find it lessens my frustration with the targeting system.
