Every chest contains a guaranteed seasonal item that will change regularly.
Every chest contains a convenience item.
Every chest contains an item that will progress your account in some way.

They’ve completely undone everything with ticket scrap drops. On at least 1 or more occasions in the past they’ve increased the drop rate of ticket scraps in black lion chests because players complained it was too hard to get the black lion weapon skins.

This is the reason why people here are saying the drop rate was reduced by quite a lot. A single ticket scrap takes up 1 of the 3 item slots in the chest, meaning, before this update you could get up to 3 ticket scraps from 1 black lion chest.

But, now the slots are specifically set to give you specific items. 1 slot is for a seasonal item (ToT bags right now), 1 slot for convenience item, and 1 slot for an advancement item (such as a tome of knowledge).

I’m not sure what type ticket scraps (convenience or advancement), but it takes up 1 slot in the chest while the other 2 are reserved for other categories. This means that no matter how many chests you open, you’ll only get 1 black lion claim ticket at most from any single chest, thus decreasing the drop rate by quite a lot. The same is true for anything else, where we had up to 3 chances per chest to get an item, now we just have 1.

I don’t like the idea of being guaranteed to get specific types of items because overall it reduces your chances of getting anything good.

There’s something charming about rangers.

…my main gripe is the removal of many long-running items from the chests which have always been available as very rare drops, in particular the home instance nodes.

Good point.

If that was deliberate, I hope that they (a) explain the rationale and (b) find a new source for those or just add it back to the table.

Good but upsetting news. I opened 75 Black Lion Chests about two weeks ago…can I make any appeal regarding these changes to the BLCs?

It can’t hurt to ask, but … we all know what Support is going to say. And why.

I’m sorry for your missed opportunity; that’s got to sting.

The good:

  1. I like the preview panel, it clearly shows what I can get and how rare things are.
  2. I got a free Black Lion Key, something for nothing is always nice.
  3. The new unlock feature sounds nice and I like the addition of more rare stuff from BL store in the past.

The bad:

  1. I used to have 3 rolls at the various items, now I only get 2 because 1 of those is always going to be a seasonal magufin I can get easily in game.
  2. Arguably worse value because of the above but also many nodes and drops seem to be taken out.

Improvements

  1. Remove Tome of Knowledge and unidentified dye as a drop.
  2. Put the seasonal item as a bonus 4th item as we’re drowning in them from normal gameplay.

this!

that tot bag in there is a slap to the face of everyone using a key atm

IF it was an extra item it would be a nice little bonus during festivals (not really worth anything but just fitting to the festival)

but the tot bag replacing another possible REAL drop is just one of the worst things ever

A ToT bag? Really? I didn’t think they could actually be worse than having a pretty much useless booster. You could literally put the first slot as being 10 silver and it would be better than a single ToT bag.

This is a pretty big nerf.

Boosters value is 100-150 gems, approximately 30g.

ToT value is currently around 5 and a half silver, or less than 1 gem.
.

Boosters are worth precisely nothing to players who do not use them because they can’t sell them. They just clutter up their bank.
So, to me, a ToT bag is worth more. But it still does not make it worth buying keys…

In the end banking it forever is a choice, and it usually happens because people are not sure when the best time to use a booster is. However, even if you pop a booster randomly and play normally without trying to maximize its effect, you will probably still get more value from a booster than from a ToT bag. Boosters are better no matter how you slice it.

But the thing is that the seasonal item is not the real replacement of the boosters. The 4th slot is the booster replacement, so you now have a chance of getting something rare instead of a guranteed booster. It also sounds that there will be an item in the seasonal slot all year, instead of only on holidays, which is a minor bonus.

I’m not really sure if the chests are better with the booster replacement, but I’m not about to use my keys yet, since I want to see if the next seasonal item is better than the ToT bags. Also, the whole thing with the removal of almost all nodes bothers me a lot.

Guys…You must be smart with Guaranteed Wardrobe Unlock, anyway.
Guaranteed Wardrobe Unlock unlocks a skin/dye/mini/bl stuff that you have locked.
Guaranteed Wardrobe Unlock have a chance to unlock a white skin, common dye or anything of cheap.

It’s better if you unlock every cheap skin first because you have the same chance, for example, to unlock a fused skin and a wooden sword

I key farm once per week on my toon Keyholio. I have saved up quite a few keys. I hadn’t purchased keys for a long time so I also bought a 5 pack. Total 28 keys with the freebie.

I had to see how good/bad the drops were now.

Most of my stuff was normal fodder but I did have a great discovery. The Wardrobe Unlocks.

I received 6 of them and got some awesome unlocks.
Winter’s Sting Skin
Flame Dye
Phoenix Staff Skin
Chaos Axe Skin
Glittering Shortbow Skin
I also got a “meh” mini.

Even with these great unlocks, I feel that the chests don’t give as good as they used to. Like many others, I think the ToT bag should be a +1 as they have done with many other seasonal extras.

The other stuff I got was not great, but I don’t expect great when I open them up. I never have. You really can’t expect great because they are not designed to give out great with any consistency.

I will say that I did enjoy the wardrobe unlocks, however.

ArenaNet why?

Why are you making us spend gems to get an item we get in season with no effort at all. You’re making us pay with our very precious gems for something that drops at almost a 100% drop rate in season???

What was the thinking behind this? I don’t understand.

Black lion should only be for things we can’t get in game because its gems… why would you do this to us?

Please tell us what the thinking was behind putting basically free-to-get items in there?

When someone told me this was happening I thought they were trolling me. :-(

And yes… what happens when Halloween ends? Because I’ll just NOT buy keys during a season. :-(

I’m HOPING that they won’t do something silly like leave Wintersday presents in the chests until next Halloween! So hopefully they will put the Boosters back. If they put something else in, hopefully it won’t be something you can easily get in-game.

But if they do leave festival containers in, I guess I won’t be purchasing anymore keys.

I was really surprised to see it, people have been farming the labyrinth like crazy and have many tot bags. The same situation will be true for wintersday. Can’t see how anyone thought it would be a good idea. As a +1 that is a different story, but taking up a whole slot, well I have already made my feelings known there.

What still eludes me is why constantly trying to find new ways of getting our money that they know is going to upset people.

I am one of those players who are more than willing to support a game because I can. If there was a Patreon sort of thing, or any way to get any kind of subscription (special title for game supporter/amount of gems per month/whatever) or even to get involved in the creation process, I would be more than willing to give my monies.

But here what do we have, a new update that nerfs RNG and tries to package it in a way that sounds cool. One thing that I personally did not appreciate (even though they’re not directly responsible) is GMs within the game “selling” the update and basically telling everyone it’s a buff/improvment.
No it’s not, please stop trying to trick people into buying, make them want to buy, make they want to support you.

Lunar New Year is the only other “regular” Festival. If they intend to make SAB a regular thing, I would hope that they don’t put Baubles in the chests since not everyone plays SAB.

But my question is still what they will do when there is no active Festival.

It’s disappointing to see that whoever’s planning these boxes isn’t listening to the community or thinking about giving players good value for their money. It’s downright infuriating that these shoddy RNG boxes even still exist, but mostly that they exist in their form exclusively as an attempt to coax player spending.

Thing is, we’ve said what we would consider buying keys for, and I think an honest polling of the community would do a lot of good, if dev-management listens to it. 100 gems or $1.56 isn’t that much to me, so I’d be willing to pay for gambling boxes, if there were some guarantee of utility. And I don’t mean an access item and a leveling tome. :\

And I sure as kitten don’t mean a single trick or treat bag when they tumble out like Halloween candy. If the seasonal gifts are going to be a thing, they ought to be a small stack, at least 20. Selling that stack for less than a gold offsets the 100 gems or 28-30g it takes to buy a key. (Or rewards a once/week, currently bugged, level 10 key run with.. very little.)

The wardrobe unlock is a fantastic idea, and I applaud it making it to the box. I’m frustrated that this is still considered a rare drop, as I’d probably be willing to buy keys if there were a slot that guaranteed an RNG of the following:

  • Ticket scraps
  • Full Tickets
  • Wardrobe Unlocks
  • Mini Egg (and none of this account bound garbage…)
And I mean it. One of those in every box. Stop the wildly random foolishness.
Many alts; handle it!

Unless I am reading what you are saying here incorrectly, the GWU is actually a common drop.

What I don’t agree with is a “guaranteed” drop like the list you gave above. They might as well put them in the gem shop and sell them individually and not have them in the chest at all.

The chests were not designed to give great stuff all the time. They were made for the purpose of entertainment. If you play the lottery IRL and expect to win, then you almost certainly will be disappointed.

I don’t mind that, in fact I do enjoy gambling, but if they’re going to nerf the RNG, it is fair to complain if you pay the same amount from it.

Once I got 2 black lion tickets (not scraps) in one chest, that’s not possible anymore. I don’t say I got it a lot, I’m saying that the possibility was there and it was sweet. Now you have a slight chance to get one… and are assured to get 2 crap items. This is a nerf, no matter what some people say.

I guess it is a matter of perception. I don’t believe that people are getting kicked anywhere.

Anyone who has played this game for any length of time KNOWS how things drop from the BL chests. If someone knows this and buys keys anyway, whose fault is it that they are disappointed when they get exactly what they know will probably drop?

If you keep buying BL keys and expect drops from the chests to be better each time you buy the keys well, that is just…

I agree with this. They really did nerf the chances. I have gotten two tickets as well. The thing is, they let us know that it is now nerfed. The best way to make your complaint heard is to not buy tickets. THAT will get them to change things when the revenue drops.

Wardrobe Unlocks… For free accounts Royal Guard Outfit is also included. A reward for accounts created before August 29, 2015.

When this item was released they stated :
“To celebrate this special three-year anniversary of Guild Wars 2, we’re giving current players an all-new Royal Guard Outfit. Wear it with pride whenever you want to show that you were there early on, and that you’re someone that new players can go to for help.”

This was reward of buying the game for 50€/$ since it didn’t require you to play the game, if you had account you got outfit. The outfit was the only thing we really got. We still had to pay for expansion the same price.

Ok, that is one of the few times I’ll agree on keeping a skin exclusive. If it’s marketed (touted? this one wasn’t directly sold) as “this marks a thanks for your doing a specific thing,” then baby-cat well never randomly hand it out to people that did not do that specific thing! I consider this different from content-related things like the holo dragon wings which should be achievable via playing the game even if one missed LS1. The baseball cap with GW2 logo was for being there at the start, the Royal Guard outfit was for being there before F2P came, and they need to stay that way.

I hope this is an error and it will be removed from the loot table post haste.

(for clarity: I am responding to above posts stating that the Royal Guard Outfit has a chance to drop for free accounts via the RNG wardrobe unlock in BLCs).

Having a ToT bag using a slot in the black lion chest is the biggest scam!

GG anet, you make it look pretty with the preview option but now 1 chest only gives 2 items because the tot is garbage.

If the chest got nerfed (2 items only) will the keys get cheaper?

So the one thing we had to show we where ’old timers" has been taken away, good job I still have my GW2 launch baseball cap………

I don’t. I tried, but Support gave me the brush-off when I tried to reclaim it after the wardrobe shift. I didn’t even care for it that much, it’s just a “I had it when..” for me.

This is a total crock! If I want ToT bags, I will go out and farm them. Until Arenanet gets rid of that “guaranteed” seasonal item, I refuse to buy any more black lion keys. I used to spend about $70 each month buying keys just for the chance of getting something decent out of the chests, but I won’t be doing that anymore. Changes like this have discouraged me from playing GW2…my playing time has gone from 6-8 hours every day to 1-2 hours. Very frustrating!!!

What the hell, Anet?

Okay, this is low. Anet… fix this. This should NOT be available.

It’s a common drop, as listed, sure. But it’s also muddled in with semi-useless muck that I wouldn’t pay for. Thus, I don’t pay for them.

It’s not about playing a “lottery”, either. That payment model is unnecessary when there is a humongous wealth of digital goods to sell. Maybe we don’t get the exact skin/item we want because of RNG (have to keep players buying somehow), but we ought to be guaranteed something that gives us legitimate progress. ToT bag definitely is not. Express items are useful, but not progress.

So that’s why I specify the unlock items like Miniature Claim Ticket, Wardrobe Unlock, and Tickets/Scraps. Ideally, it’d look something like:
Slot 1: Common or Uncommon drop
Slot 2: Common to Super Rare drop (or maybe just Common to Rare)
Slot 3: Guaranteed account unlock item (mini, wardrobe, etc) chosen at random.
Slot 4: Surprise chance of Rare to Super Rare drop.

With my current account status, I could easily drop $100 and not fill the locked material I’m missing. Not that I’d spend that much (in one go >.>), but I’d be much more easily convinced to loose $3-$5 on a whim if I knew I’d get good stuff for it.

Let me get this straight sure they cut out a slot in the chest by making the third slot a holiday only slot but if you can preview every chest you open before opening one can’t you ensure that you only open chests that have favorable conditions; that sounds like a win win situation to me.

You can preview what the chest could give you, not what it has other than the 1st slot seasonal item.

We do know what of six items and drop in each of the other two slots. And we know the uncommon, rare and super rare will only drop in the occasional 4th slot which may be a 10% chance of getting.

Now if none of that floats your boat, then don’t buy keys. If you farm a key a week to see if you get lucky, great. But this transparency is a mark up from a crowd sourced list of what’s available and if it’s common, uncommon, rare or super rare.

My wife and I had been following flax and iron ore permanent nodes on the TP for some time, waiting for them to drop further… they were the only ones we didn’t have. They’ve been steady for awhile. This morning we did a frantic sell to get the money for the buy price and bought them before the price started to rise. Since they are already going up, I’m glad we noticed that they are not included anymore.

Does anyone know if Teleport to Friend has also been removed?

And I am one of the ones not happy about the removal of boosters. I have always found them very useful and I will not buy them from the trading post. If the conversion dust still drops, I will consider that an extra slap.

I think it’s great that BL Ticket scraps and Wardrobe Unlocks are now common drops. Seems like better chances to me! =)
