First of all, I love the preview option. I also like the wardrobe unlock items, though it did disappoint me when one of the ones I got unlocked a very basic crafting skin. The other 3 I had after opening several chests gave me better luck. No more boosters is good, too.

The only real disappointment is that the preview option is indicating that all but one harvesting node have been removed from the chests. Was this really intended? It wasn’t mentioned in the notes that I can see.

The wiki is player updated. The in-game preview function they just added shows only the pepper node is still in there. Either the preview function is broken (bad), or the wiki needs to be updated (also bad).

Exactly this. Heavy nerf, in my eyes to chests. I rather get a booster than a ToT bag, or a gift during winter. But whatever, it is what it is and I dont buy keys with real money to begin with.

I got a Phoenix Sword skin. Very cool. And a Mad King dye, and a mini-pet and 2 Black Lion Tickets and 5 scraps. All from the free key and 5 more keys. The next 5 keys didn’t give anything special. Tome, bank express, transmutation charge, etc.

I forgot to ‘preview’ any chests/bags. =(

All in all, a nice improvement. Thanks, Devs!

You probably just forgot to turn around three times counter-clockwise and tousle the lucky-troll’s blue hair (NEVER PURPLE OR GREEN!) before you clicked the BL key. It’s an easy thing to forget.

Same, it’s a big nerf as far as I’m concerned.

In 25 chests, of note I got the new glider, a bl ticket and enough scraps for another ticket, an unlock of a rare mini from collection 1, a mini claim ticket, and a sellable improvised rifle skin.

For previewing the bags and boxes you don’t have to have one in inventory. You can go through the ones in the TP and right click there for preview.

Pretty much how I feel. Before, during festivals, the seasonal drop was the fourth reward. And now it replaces a reward. I’d rather have a booster.

I saw that it was updated, that is why I posted. I would guess that the previewer is wrong since the BLC on the wiki is updated.

I wonder if the actual previewer is not large enough to show everything. On the wiki it has the nodes at the very bottom. I would guess, not having seen it yet, that there are other things not showing on the previewer as well.

That page was last updated on the 11th. The chests were updated today. So the wiki page is out of date.

The best thing about the preview is that I no longer have to dig through patch notes to figure out what is the current weapon skins being dropped by the BLC.

Hello, are the Permanent Access items ( hair contract, bank access etc.) still droppable through black lion chests? And will the Trick or Treats bags will be removed from black lion chests as Halloween ends? Thanks in advance!

Seconded. Seasonal drop should be a 4th bonus reward, not replace something otherwise useful with easily farmable bags of junk (most of the contents of which are worthless and useless to the point that even the tradeable ones aren’t worth selling).

Please, Anet, we don’t want to buy garbage.

A+ on the rest of the chest update, definitely QoL improvements the rest of the way around.

I don’t think it’s greedy, I think it’s a waste of your gems.

If you buy 25 keys/2100 gems, that’s 84 gems per key. MOST of the bags are 3 item bags, which means you are paying 28 gems per ToT bag item. 28 gems is 6 gold if you sell them outright. 28 gems x 25 keys is 700 gems you’ve burned for nothing, or 150g you could have had selling those gems.

On top of that, I tried 28 keys, and got crap. Only 3 or 4 keys gave me 4 item bags. I was hoping for the unsellable ghoul skin, but instead I got more unsellable bank/merch expresses/tomes after I have perma ones and stacks of tomes sitting in the bank. My only “good” item in all that was ONE black lion ticket and a few scraps.

I like that theoretically the chances of a Black Lion tickets are better, but I hate that there are more exclusive account bound items you can only get through gambling. I’d really rather have celebration boosters or magic find boosters, and a chance at a node, and some kind of guaranteed value for my keys rather than getting 4 in a row with a ToT bag, a merch express and a tome. And kitten , at least make it a CHANCE for a ToT bag, not a guaranteed slot thrown away for a useless item.

1 — yes, at least they show up in the Preview under “super rare.”

2 — It stands to reason that once we are out of the Halloween season (in a week), the “seasonal item” drop will no longer be a tot bag.

It’s true that Papaya Dye is Common, but the ‘promise’ is for an Uncommon or Rare item in the fourth slot.

Yup.

While these changes help me actually want to get some keys, this is the big reason why I won’t still. They basically decreased the number of items you get out of the chest to 2, since the third is pretty useless season item (right now its a ToT bag)…

I don’t think this is quite right. You can get a skin — current set is the Improvised Weapons — that you can sell. I cannot prove that you can get one you’ve unlocked as I have not yet unlocked any of the Improvised iirc, but it seems likely. The random skin unlock listed is the Wardrobe Unlock, which is account bound, and unlocks one thing you don’t yet have. The one I got turned into a rare-quality group-1 mini, the river drake broodmother, unlocked directly rather than becoming an in-backpack mini. For all I know I could later get a mini egg that drops the same one and then sell that.

Well, there’s a chance to get something nice from a ToT bag. Some players lamented always getting Boosters. At least you can sell the ToT bag. /shrug

2 different features. One thing that you might get is a wardrobe unlock item. When you click on it it unlocks one skin in your wardrobe. Some restrictions apply.

A random wardrobe unlock item has been added to the chest. This will unlock a weapon, armor piece, backpack, outfit, dye, glider, miniature, or finisher at random, guaranteed to be something you do not yet have. This does not include rewards exotic or better but does include all Black Lion – style items prior to September.

The black lion chests also contains skins, mostly Black Lion weapon skins. If you get one you may at may not already have it. A skin is something you can unlock for your own use or sell.

The free key and chest gave me a ToT bag, a Bank Access Express (worthless to me because I have a permanent one) and a single Tome.

Not worth the few seconds I spent on the whole thing. I never buy keys, and this does nothing to change my mind.

All home instance nodes have been removed from the loot table for BL chests except for the ghost pepper harvesting node, as someone pointed out. RIP home instance completion, unless these are added back in (or unless this is a mistake and the preview simply isn’t showing them for some reason—if so that should be clarified) most of us will be unable to continue trying to flesh out our home instances because the prices on all TP-tradeable nodes are going to skyrocket.

EDIT: Upon further examination, Black Lion Salvage Kits are no longer dropping from BL chests either now.

This. I was excited for the changes until I saw that the seasonal item is no longer a bonus item and, instead, is permanently in the third slot. That soured it a bit, for me.

Now that the BL chests have been effectively reduced from 3 potential drops to 2, and now that the drop table has seen a significant reduction in possible items, I don’t see myself spending money on BL keys again. If I had the extra gold, I would purchase the remaining home instance nodes now before the prices start to spike, but I don’t, so I guess home instance completion is taking a back seat once again.

All mail carriers have been removed from the loot table. They’re no longer in the BL chests.

Didn’t we go through random skin drops in BLC like a million times before? It always ends in angry tears. I would have straight up bought the glider skin off the store, won’t spend a single gem on keys.

I didn’t buy BLC keys before and I see no reason to buy them now where I basically get 1 drop less for the same money. It wasn’t worth it before and is worth it even less now, since an EXP booster for example is still better than a ToT bag.

Honestly, who thought that this would be a good idea?

It’s stuff like this that makes me think people at Anet think that their players are ridiculously stupid monkeys who will never notice that they were slighted.

Not almost…They ALL have a guaranteed ToT bag. You don’t get 3 slots of items, you get 2 slots and one guaranteed bag. And yeah….Wintersdays will have a guaranteed present. So…socks, anyone?

Yes there is… plenty of valuables in a ToT bag, and with better odds than the valuables in the BL chest too.

I don’t understand why arena.net is so greedy. While a booster is not a good drop, it is still better than a ToT bag. Just why replace it? Now you can get something like tot-bag (i opened thousands)+transmutation charge (i have 430 now) + tome of knowledge (just trash).

They removed useless blts gathering tools before. Now boosters. Still not worth it.

May be they will remove fistival useless trash… one day… after a year or two. Ok we will wait.

I love speed boosters. I save them for WvW and for the Blighting Tower. When I opened my new chest I had a merchant express, a tome of knowledge and a trick or treat bag. I think this is possibly the worst chest I have ever opened. I suppose whatever skin it gave me was one I had already unlocked. I probably won’t be buying keys anymore. The only reason I get them is for tickets and ticket scraps, and the booster is at least a consolation prize. Without the booster I have no interest. A trick or treat bag? Really? Come on.

And I don’t know if other people are in my position, but low level skins are lame, I have Fashion Collector achievement, which means I have all the low level skins I need, and I am wondering if the marketing department researched who buys chests, is it people that don’t unlock these skins? If so I guess it makes sense to do this… it doesn’t attract me, though

The good:

1. I like the preview panel, it clearly shows what I can get and how rare things are.
2. I got a free Black Lion Key, something for nothing is always nice.
3. The new unlock feature sounds nice and I like the addition of more rare stuff from BL store in the past.

The bad:

1. I used to have 3 rolls at the various items, now I only get 2 because 1 of those is always going to be a seasonal magufin I can get easily in game.
2. Arguably worse value because of the above but also many nodes and drops seem to be taken out.

Improvements

1. Remove Tome of Knowledge and unidentified dye as a drop.
2. Put the seasonal item as a bonus 4th item as we’re drowning in them from normal gameplay.

On the other hand you are no longer wasting gold/money on bad gambles! That could be counted as an improvement.

Seems that way …

Every chest contains a guaranteed seasonal item that will change regularly.

So they will probably give ToT bags until it switch over to Wintersday Gifts.

Removing the useless boosters was encouraging, but the contents still need a major overhaul. Transmutation charges, Tomes, Revive Orbs and so forth are just trash. Do we have to wait another 4 years until those can get removed as well?

The move changing the booster slot to a seasonal item really was a poor choice. It will overshadow the positive changes for many players.

How to remedy: Reinstate the booster slot and make the seasonal item a + item. Keep everything else the same.
