Character Attachments
I agree this is one of the problems with the game. If you want to attach yourself to a character, you have to sort of do it yourself. This game definitely doesn’t have the same immersion factor Guild Wars 1 had.
I don’t have a main, I’m on my 3rd alt and will be starting my 4th within the month or so. I don’t get attached to video game characters because they’re characters in video games.

For an MMO to be successful , they should give you a reason to keep logging in . I too have made many alts but have deleted them in the past . Also , people who are attached to their characters are more likely to spend money in the cash shop ( Gem store . ) Take a look at WoW , people that play that game will never leave it for a new and shiny game because the players are attached to their characters .
Cheers
I have 3 “mains” I’m attached too here :P Had 4 mains on ToR, and about 12 “mains” on CoH.
GW 1 was fully instanced with lots of cinematics that is how the immersion was better. In Guild Wars 2 it is less instanced and more open world. The only instanced is a personal story. So less attachment to a character.
Perhaps to fix this they need to add to the personal story what your character is doing after Zytan. Sortof like a second book. However that is not likely to happen until a expansion.
In WoW it is just a pain to level to max level that is why they are attached to characters there.
Perhaps they need to add more personal story.
I wasn’t a big fan of the personal stories. WvW and skins are what makes me attached here.
Only reason why I’m attached to my character is because all my legendaries are soulbound to him.
If I could have account bound legendaries I’d ditch him.

Well I consider my second character (Engineer) my ‘Main’ as he is the one I like playing most and do group stuff with.
However because my Warrior is my most advanced in terms of zone coverage, I still play him most. Once he has 100% map completion I probably won’t play him much (aside from the occasional LS update).
As far as engagement, I would say I am not attached to any one character like I was in some other MMORPG’s but I would say that is more due to shared acheivements then any really lack of engagement on the games part. Since I can basically progress on any character (save map) I more or less play the character that I am into at that time.
The game as a whole engages me and I enjoy playing it, I just don’t latch on to any one character.

I actually like this game , it’s why I’m still here , but for me there’s just not much character attachment .

Yeah that’s why I don’t generally play MMO’s, because I can’t get attached to a bunch of pixels in a video game. Guild Wars is different in that it’s actually fun to play…well that and I can play it without interacting with people…
I’m actually more attached to my main in GW2 than I ever was in GW. I had a 20 of each class in GW, all of them fun & awesome, but my attachment to them was as a whole. In GW2 I have one 80 and I love her. I have numerous alts of various levels, but my main is where my attachment lies.

Maybe aside from my Norn Guardian, I am attached to all my characters…but Im probably more easily attached. My main I am ofcourse, most attached to, since I feel like it best represents me I suppose.
I’m very attached to my Main Character, my twinks not so much, but that has one big and simple reason for me personally:
The difference between my Main Character and my Twinks simply is, that I’ve came up so far only for my Main Character with an idea of selfmakitten background story which I’ve in mind and because its sofar the class simply I like the most to play, even if its gameplay features are right now massively underwhelming compared to other MMO’s with the same/similar class.
I’m a roleplayer, when I create characters, I always give them realistical and natural sounding names that go fluidly from the tongue, when you speak them out.
All my twinks have fantasy names that fit for RPing, but just only my Main Character so far has its own backgroundstory to which I can attach and identify myself with, what makes it easy for me to say, that this character is naturally so far the one, which I like the most.
That makes this character also naturally the one, which I have equipped so far with the most best stuff I could get, like best armory/runes as also accessoires like ascendent stuff, where no other twink so far has any equipment with that I could count myself playing with these characters being a competitive enemy for others, be it SPvP or WvW…
Its also normal that way, that I’ve played over all this timewith my main character to which I’m attached to most of the time, when I played GW so far. My Main makes out mostly 3/4th of all my playtime alone.
If this doesn’t count as being attached to a character, then I don’t know what else should do
