Guild Wars 2

I did search for this topic (both in google and these forums directly) and only found it on other websites, rather than these forums.

The gameplay has been great and the graphics look awesome (I’m actually new to the guild wars series, started last week).

What I would like to see is (or at least I think it is) rather simple, actually. I come from WOW and LOTRO which both allow this and I’ve missed it while playing here. That’s the simple ability to see my own name as well as others…I also would like to see my own portrait that other people see when clicking on me.

I like to call this the mirror effect. I’ve gotten so use to the target and name mirrors in other games, that I dislike their absence here. It’s not a big deal, I suppose, and it’s not like I’ll forget my own name. Granted I can see what my character looks like, overall, but these are both visuals other people see when looking at me. I’d like to “check them in the mirror” to make sure my title or shortened guild name doesn’t look awful with my name, or just to satisfy my weird curiosity for what other people are seeing when they look at me/target me/etc.

I’m actually not obsessed with mirrors in reality though, but I do check them before going out to make sure my shirt isn’t half tucked into my underwear. Since names are visual in the game (as are target icons), I lump them under appearance maintenance.

Also, on more than one occasion in WOW and LOTRO I’ve completely recreated a character because what I liked in character selection wasn’t visually appealing over my character’s head. I’ve also tinkered with guild/kinship names in both games, titles, etc. because what I wanted actually looked sloppy or just way over-done hovering over my head (ie wait where’s my name in this whole mess…I don’t even wanna read all of this, let alone expecting other people to).

Hopefully, especially if it is a rather simple thing in code, we may see it implemented in the future.

Or, am I just blind and they’ve already installed this feature and I just can’t locate it? All I found was for turning other people’s names on, while still holding mine in the blind spot.

Lots of people miss it. Not sure why they didn’t put it in this time. Maybe we will get it back in a QoL update, some day.

In other games I actually have my name displayed above my head even though it’s not really needed… I kinda miss this feature.

Been asking for this since beta. My character’s name is an intrinsic part of the character.

Also: I have a guildmate that rolls alts, and because he does not see the missing tag (because name does not display), he usually forgets to represent.

Name, guild and title showing are standard across MMO’s.

(edit) Most MMO’s have a toggle for name/title showing as well.

But then, as I’ve said before, GW2 isn’t really an MMO.

We don’t have this option o_O? Fancy that!

while the current standard (shown below) is sooo much better, cleaner and more believable makes NPC’s more life like w/o a stupid nameplate over their heads all the time.

Thank God, there is no moronic nameplate / title / guild tag over my character’s head !

I don’t want to see giant text in the middle of my screen, but if someone wants that – sure, I don’t see any reason why there is no option like that

I do miss seeing my character’s name and title (from L2), check if it looks nice. I also miss the option of mouse clicking to walk. But as far as I know NCSoft: even though those are simle requests, they will never attend them.

This feature is practically standard across all MMOs and would be trivial to enable (not even code; I bet it would take all of 30 seconds to add it to the next build). But I’ve come to appreciate that GW2 isn’t a standard MMO. Among other things we’re missing: self nameplate, ping meter, target-of-target, inspecting others…

All are features I considered “necessary” before trying GW2, but now if I had to be honest, I don’t even think about them. Reminds me of a certain computer that shipped without a floppy drive in 1998.

That said, making such features available and optional would do no harm.

I would like to see my own character’s name panel (name, guild, title) above his head as well. I really can’t understand why this isn’t at least an option. It seems like the coders would have to expend extra effort to NOT have my name above my head. I want it so I can easily see at a glance what guild this character is representing, what title he’s currently sporting, and, perhaps most importantly (to me), to identify my character in screen shots months or years later and remember who the hell I was

It’s clear from other replies to this topic that there is at least one (perhaps exactly one) person who doesn’t want to see his name over his head, and for that reason, the feature should be optional. How hard would it be to tie it to a check box somewhere on the settings panel?

In my case, I want it the other way.
The ability to hide my tagname to other players unless they target me. Would allow “hide ambush” in WvW and PvP. Also useful to hide behind a crate while roleplaying.

I think the reason we can’t see the names, is that we cannot target ourselves. Targeting seems to be the requirement for a name/label to show up.

I would love to be able to see my own name, but it if requires re-working the game engine, or some such, I’d much rather have new content, rather than resources spent on that. =)
