Character Names ?
Because you cannot make a Charr named Jesus. Charr have no gods. Someone made a Charr named Mohammed and was banned for inappropriate name after 1.5 years of using that name though. So Mohammed is also inappropriate, although it took 1.5 years to make a decision on this one.
I can still make a character with Mohammed. Where as anything with Jesus in it does not work.

And if somebody reports you, you will have to change your character’s name in 1.5 years from now.

Thats not really true because I have had someone on my server with the name “Mohammed Big Bang” for years now (which I reported) and no action has been taken.

Maybe there was more to the banning of the other Mohammed than just the name.
It’ll probably take a lot of complaining from Moslem players to put it on the “can’t use” list, even though a fair whack of those players might actually be called Mohammed.
Would you like some hard cheeze with your sad whine?
Well this sounds like double standards. Disallowing the use of “Jesus” by default but not the names of iconic figures from other religions (let alone the second biggest religion) as if other people’s faiths are less important.
I have the feeling that it’s only the christians and muslims that actually get mad.
If I were to name my character Buddha I doubt many would care.
It’s just a sensible topic and I have the feeling this thread won’t see the light of tomorrow.

:p I wasn’t aware any topics made the light of day
Yeah, well, what can you do.

SixlbEightozBabyJesus should be ok though
I am an Agnostic;
But why is it that character names with “Jesus” in them considered inappropriate, and ones with “Mohammed” considered okay ?
There was me thinking it was spelled Muhammad, mind you I doubt all the many various names used for Jesus have been banned yet either.
Jesus because not as many people are familiar with the Hispanic (Hey-zeus…english teachers gimme a break, thats as close as i wanna bother on a game forum) or the fact that some cultures use the name as english speakers are used to saying it… I worked with a guy named Jesus (yes, jeez-us) for a while. So they immediately think it’s a religious reference.
Mohammed on the other hand is a name we’ve all seen given regularly to people on the news, and afaik, it’s a very common name in Islamic cultures, so common that I don’t think naming your character with it is seen right away as being religious in nature. The charr name Mohammed Big Bang above could fall under the “trolling/baiting” thing though.
Also consider Mohammed is seen as a prophet (a man), where Jesus is presented more in the light of an avatar of the divine than a man.
Mind you, I’m not nearly so closely familiar with Islamic worship as Christian, but that’s the best I got according to what I know.
“Jesus” is not permitted? Really?
All those poor people who want to use the name “Jesus” (Hey-Zeus) are not allowed to simply because one person who may or may not have existed 2,000 years ago shares the name? I see plenty of characters with “Lucifer” in their name. Why is that permitted and “Jesus” is not? Is “Satan” also restricted? Buddha? Ghandi? Some of these I can see why they are restricted if they are, as Buddha is not a name one would expect a ‘normal’ person to have for their name. But “Jesus” (Hey-Zeus) is quite common as a name, as is Mohammad.
Really going overboard on restricting names that shouldn’t be, and not restricting names that should be.

In another game I knew a Tank Jezus.. so even though I bet that one’s making the list now soon if it hasn’t already, no…you can still slip some in. (Wok Sof Carybig Dic from GW1) Also I got a weekend off in gw1 when they realized ‘kitten’ wasn’t on the filter list
EDIT: but it is now, thx for the laughs from Germany! Massive kitten was my name.

Both spellings, Muhammed & Mohammed are allowed in the character creation screen. Anything with “Jesus” in it will immediately tell you “Inappropriate Name”
I wanted to create a Charr called Raptor Charr Jesus
I remember “Jezus Beam”(Ray of Judgment) from GW1.
There is no Jesus, Mohammed, Vishnu or Amaterasu in Tyria. Those characters are not named after deities in the context of the game. I’m more bothered by meeting Grenth, Kormir or Abaddon in the middle of Lion’s Arch.
Surely Jesus and Mohammed should be considered acceptable names; since people can legally have those names in real life. There are many Hispanic people called Jesus, and I’ve known a Mohammed.
Also I hate my user ID.

I agree; but given their religious context they should also be regulated. Arenanet is not regulating them nor disallowing all of them, nor allowing all of them.
Do we really have to get into the difference between an online game and real life again? Tell you what-show me a person named ‘Jesus sucks’ or ‘sexy Jesus’ in real life then I’ll start to explain the difference. There’s no discussion if you can’t even do that.
Also I do believe I saw a post saying they were looking into language differences in regards to the filter, because yes, on a Spanish speaking server Spanish names should be fine. However the server isn’t. And the potential for abuse and discomfort of thousands far outweigh the ten guys who might want to name themselves in-game. I do agree however that Mohammed should also be blocked. Granted most kids from the ‘developed, civilized’ countries tend to like to mock, ridicule and disrespect Christianity more than Islam but it’s best to not give sharp, pointed tools to children. Hell, even if people wrote their name as ‘Jesus’ disciple’ can you imagine the abuse they would suffer daily from immature kids/legally declared adults who think it’s ‘cool’ to say they’re atheist/agnostic and believe that means they should bash on people who believe in some kind of faith?
Best to not open that Pandora’s box.
The beginning of wisdom is to call things by their proper name.

Agreed… just agreed… welcome to the reasons (both sides at fault) for censorship, nanny states and a boatload of other political issues come into being /sigh
Dash it all, now I have an overwhelming desire to make a toon named “Hey Zeus” and no empty slots.
Religious symbols are against the rules, Mohammed is likely just overlooked in the filter list, but that doesn’t mean its an okay name.
Jesus = Son of God
Mohammed = Prophet of God
Slightly different context. Yes I know both names are in common use.

It doesn’t matter. Some people don’t believe in Jesus, others don’t believe in Mohammed. What matters is that both are religious icons and hold the same importance to people in both religions. Either block both names or don’t block any at all. Double standards is just silly.

I don’t think anyone ever suggested names like that on this topic. If a person playing a game chooses to call their character something offensive; that is them abusing their power, and if someone chooses to name their kid the same offensive name it is also abuse of power; it is the same. Point is; online game or not, Jesus, and Mohammed are valid names, and if someone chooses to abuse that power that is that individual’s problem, so they as an individual should be dealt with.

Jesus and Mohammed are not strictly religious symbols either, but rather names given to religious figures. If your name was specifically “Jesus of Nazareth” or “Mohammed of Mecca” I can understand those being unacceptable as they are not names, but rather titles for the specific religious figures.
