Character recovery?
You’re SoL, but you will eventually get the gift on your newer characters once they reach 1 year of age.

SoL?
i kind of made my newest character like a month ago ._.
SoL = kitten out of luck.
You have more than 1 character. Just wait for the next birthday. If that birthday is one month ago, then sucks to be you.
Recovery is available, but it rolls back the entire account to the specific date, can only be used once during the lifetime of your account and only works for stuff lost within the last several months.

That only works on compromised accounts afaik.
Intentionally deleting your character doesnt’ follow that

Yehp, you have to prove that your account was lost and stuff was removed.
Is there a way to recover a character you deleted by mistake?
Is there a way to recover a character you deleted by mistake?
Nope, the character deletion process requires you to type in a name as a fail safe. You are out of luck.

Nope. Account rollbacks, which could do that, are only offered for accounts that have been hacked and only once.
Can I ask why they don’t offer this service? They have all kind of services (not really important) in their shop, why they don’t care if someone wants to have his deleted character back – where he invested his money and time?

Well, you can’t just accidentally click delete and lose a character. You have to choose to click Delete, type out the character’s name, and then click to confirm. There’s no need for an “oops, undo that” option generally. Plus, if the person was truly concerned with his investment of money and time, he in most cases wouldn’t delete the character in the first place.

Yeah, you are pretty much out of luck. I wish we could though because i had made two necros of different races. One was made prior to april 2014 and one after. I had intended to delete the latter one but got them mixed up :-( Now i have a lowbie necro with no traits unlocked… oh well
each character has its independant “birthday”
you can see how old your character is by typing /age
Once it says its 365 years old youll get your first birthday present

Most likely because unlike things like name and appearance changes allowing players to recover deleted characters would require saving every single character every single player had ever created, just in case they want it back.
That’s a huge amount of data to save, and therefore a lot of storage space Anet would need to buy, for a service I suspect would be rarely used (on the basis that this is the first time I’ve ever seen anyone ask for it).

Imagine if they would keep data for every single Key farm alt ever created…
I’m honestly surprised and a little disappointed that they don’t offer this service. This information needs to be more noticeable, especially for new players, who might not realize that in such a popular game, this is not an option so they can make more systematic decisions.
The information that shows up during the delete process seems pretty clear to me that it’s permanent.

As to why they don’t offer this service, the game’s ability to change stuff doesn’t seem to be very “modular.” If it’s an item sitting in the inventory then support can work with it and replace, delete or exchange. However once it gets onto the Hero panel and is a part of the account then they can’t seem to do anything to it. Can’t seem to add or subtract laurels, influence, wardrobe, karma, and it seems, replace deleted characters. They also don’t have a way to change the race or profession, only the sex and appearance, which is cosmetic and doesn’t effect personal story or home instance. For whatever reason they seem to never have developed the tools to replace characters deleted.
ANet may give it to you.
It is also worth pointing out that a service like that can easily be abused and hurt the economy quite a bit.

I don’t see why they can’t offer a short term recovery offered lets say if you want your character back within a week or 2.. Yes you have to type in the name but does anyone have kids? They get mad, they do stupid things.. my daughter has deleted important characters in other games (yes she can read and write names) since she wanted a free slot and I wasn’t around and luckily they returned my character. I fail to see how offering a short term recovery would be such a bad thing
Is there a way to recover a character you deleted by mistake?
It’s not possible to do this as you have to type in the character to delete’s name to perform the action (pretty much impossible this could be done “by mistake”). Making the mistake of not removing items you wanted to keep before deleting is NOT the same thing.

That’s why you need to keep your account secure. So that your “little brother”, children and other sorts don’t log into your account without your permission and delete your characters. All I can see here is a situation when the person was negligence on their part to keep their personal account safe, and then wants a company to use their resources (which will cost money, hardware, training, time of support agents, etc) to correct an issue that should never occur.
Simply put. Don’t leave your account logged in. Don’t save your account details in the log in screen, if you have people in your house who can delete characters when you aren’t at your computer. It’s really simple.
…or learn to lock the computer (WINDOWS + L on a Win machine) when you leave it unattended. This should be common sense to protect so much more than just your GW2 account.
One thing to consider with this complaint / request; where do these “deleted” characters get stored and who pays for that storage? While you may state that this should be a negligible amount, keep in mind that there would be no way to determine what a player MAY want to recover x time in the future (if this feature were offered) and I can assure you that during my key running days, I deleted at LEAST 25 to 50 characters per week….and I’m not a hardcore key runner.
Also, many players coming from monthly subscription games need to understand that no one player is spending X amount of money per month on this game and thus there is no known income from any one player that could possibly support this kind of additional feature from an economic standpoint.

I don’t see why hacked accounts can get their characters restored but deleted characters can’t.
Also the fact that even hacked accounts only get to restore once doesn’t seem all that customer friendly to me.

Hacked accounts getting rolled back isn’t the same as a deleted character being restored.

Because the hack they talk about is someone outside of your housing area getting onto your account. And most (basically 99%) of the accounts hacked are the account holders fault. Especially those whose email accounts are also hacked.
And Anet doesn’t remove the items from game, since most items are sold on the market. So it is added items, some of which are rather expensive items, to the game. If people keep getting hacked, then they keep getting those items added to the market.
After your first hack, you really should learn to protect your personal identity better. And they have made exceptions to the 1 rollback rule. Usually to those who had their serial codes taken from their hacked emails, which makes it much easier to hack an account.

Edit: Also, necroing an old thread is usually not a good idea. This thread really needs to die, it was originally created over a year ago.
