Q:
Charging for portals - Can you get banned?
A:
Well, if the practices in GW1 are any indicator, then no. Running people for pay was quite common in GW1, and ArenaNet was aware of it, and had no problem with it.
Question in title. If someone charges to portal people to the end of a jumping puzzle. Is that illegal in any way?
I feel like it’s a “You’re not wrong, you’re just an kitten hole”, but any pointer would be nice.
Banned? No? Jack kitten Yes.
RIP my fair Engi and Ranger, you will be missed.
Well, he cant stop you from using his portal, after another one pays for it.

I see nothing wrong with charging for portals. i usually leave a tip, 5-10s, anyways. I’ll go as high as 25s if I drop something good in the chest. You aren’t getting anything for sitting there porting people up while evey one else is killing stuff and collecting loot. You should at least get some form of compensation, I suck at JP’s and the time I save from not having to jump is definitely worth the money.
“…let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we shall die;.”
There’s nothing wrong since you’re providing an in-game service.
Same as Julie Yann….I suck at JP … when I can get a portal out of generosity…I usually send a tip….just normal…hence if someone wants to charge why not ? If I can’t afford it then I won’t take it.
Be tough to enforce your fee and I’d hate to charge up front which opens you up to scamming “take the money and run” situations. But I don’t see any reason not to say “10s for portal” and hope they mail it to you after.
It’s all in-game no out of game transaction so its fine. I like the idea myself and always tip players that are willing to port me as during the week am on a low spec laptop so jp’s are extremely hard!
Again it takes away any frustration with the game i might get for not being able to do them myself so again making the game more lade back so am all kool for it!
Sorry to go off topic a bit I’m not sure how the portal works. I’m fairly new and have yet to see one in action. I gather that it allows one to enter one point and exit at another. What is the range of a portal? Once someone exits at the other end of the portal can they go back in to return to their original location? Can the Mesmer also enter the portal they created?
Just curious because I can see where this would be a lot of help with jump puzzles which I am terrible at. Actually I have yet to complete one. I have tried the one in Queensdale several time but usually end up getting killed when I think I have gotten close to the solution, veterans with adds and such usually get me. Given the limited range of movement I have a hard time with dodging etc.
I know I could have posted this in the PhP forum but thought I would ask here given the topic.
@JustTrogdor
A mesmer sets up a portal (Use skill)
A portal appears on the ground
The mesmer runs to location B and sets a second portal on the ground (Use skill again)
Anyone (Limited to 20 ports per portal) can now use the portal either way as many times they want, although the portal itself only stays active for some seconds before disappearing.
In the case of jumping puzzle the idea is often that the Mesmer simply falls down to the lower ground and portal people up from there.

Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions. Is there a range limit on how far the Mesmer can run and set the exit?

There is, but I’ve honestly can’t say I’ve ever hit that range limit. It’s ridiculously long, range of 5000 according to the wiki.
Anyways, tbh I can’t say I’ve ever seen someone charging for portals……simply because trying to enforce it would be a hilarious failure, especially when another mesmer like me decides to stop that.
On the other hand, I do see mesmers (myself included) saying they would appreciate tips, but we don’t raise a stink about it if we don’t get said tips.
It’s actually rather shocking how much people are willing to tip.

Uhm. I made 10g porting people today. That’s why I wanted to know.
mmoRPG. The RPG bit stands for role-playing game. What if the role you want to play is “someone who makes money” from providing a service? What on earth is wrong with that?
People aren’t forced to pay you, they can always do the puzzle themselves.
I personally wouldn’t charge for my portals for the following reasons:
1) People will flame you in chat for it.
2) Another mesmer will most likely offer it for free.
3) People are less likely to give you money because they think you are greedy.
4) I find charging a large amount excludes the poorer players.
5) I get enough money from tips.
6) I’d feel bad about taking advantage of people that can’t do jp’s.

Funny story: Just got accused of begging in map chat when I said tips appreciated. Told I would get “no begging money” here
5 seconds later, I’m 6 gold richer.

I got one whispering “scammer” permanently.. Plenty of flame indeed.
Yes mesmers do it free often. Gotta play it smart (Overflow switching)
People will give me money. I charge before portal or half now half after port.
I think of all the times i did it free I earned 10 silver total. (Maybe 4 hours of porting)
I consider that.. But whenever people say they dont have the money i port them for half or free.
:) kitten mesmer yay.
Guild Wars one for years had people that charged for services. It was an accepted part of the game and I don’t see Mesmer portaling people for a fee as any different. Personally I would rather pay someone who is happy to do it for a fee than either not be able to do it or be reduced to asking in chat and hoping someone will take time out to do it.
Having a slow laggy connection means that some jumping puzzles are unobtainable for me. The one in Southsun with the disappearing step stones combined with lag is particularly bad.

if im on my mesmer i purposefully go and complete the same puzzle just so i can port for free
80 warr [Blaze Steelsoul], 80 ele [Blaze Nightstrike], 80 mesmer [Grim Shatterwhirl]
80 guard [Dusk Grimlight], 80 engi [Flintgear]
i’ll take a port if its there. not going to tip people for using their moves. what’s next? charging for condition removal? charging for a res?
I always tip mesmers that port me (10-20s), they’re taking time out from playing to help and that’s freakin awesome.

It is more than that though. The use of their skill potentially helps people pass content some would never get through.

Yeah because me using “shake it off” is comparable to a Mesmer (who had to do the whole jumping puzzle first) sitting in one place, some times for an hour or more not directly benefiting at all from helping people get the reward faster. In EBG i have seen Mesmers double porting to the chest which takes the outside player about one minute or less to get the chest. I believe that this is a service and they should be compensated for helping others. Remember everyone tip your Mesmers.
